I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away. Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window, As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say good-bye.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: A few weeks later, I went to the farm again.

Paragraph 2: I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared.

Paragraph 1:
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. On arrival, I approached the milking house and noticed that the broken window had been completely fixed, with no sign of the danger that had once threatened the small bird. I was relieved and grateful that my friends had taken my warning to heart and taken action to protect the hummingbird. I spent the afternoon exploring the farm and chatting with my friends, hoping to catch a glimpse of the little bird. However, a ripple
of sadness surged through me when not seeing the lovely
creature the whole day. The night screen was to hang down.

Paragraph 2:
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. She was flying around me and hovering just a few inches in front of my face. I was amazed and touched by this unexpected visit. The tiny bird seemed to be thanking me for rescuing her and making sure she was safe. I stood there, entranced by her beauty and grace as she flew circles around me. After a few moments, she let out a squeaking call as if bidding me farewell and flew off into the distance. As I said goodbye to the
hummingbird and climbed into my car, I knew that I would
always treasure the memory of that special encounter.
这篇续写的新颖之处在于,出题者提供的结尾“She must have come to say good-bye.”
desperately trying to escape(拼命试图逃脱)
covered in spider-webs(沾满蛛网)
barely able to move her wings(几乎无法移动翅膀)
ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up(在我捧起它的瞬间停止了挣扎)
she sat looking at me with her bright eyes(它坐着,用明亮的眼睛看着我)
this tiny creature looked into my eyes(这个小生灵凝视着我的眼睛)
She again looked directly into my eyes(它再次直视我的眼睛)
Hovering... approached within six inches of my face(悬停……
let out a squeaking call(发出一声吱吱的鸣叫)
She was flying around me and hovering just a few inches in front of my face.(它绕着我飞,在我脸前几英寸处悬停。)
...she let out a squeaking call as if bidding me farewell...(……
The tiny bird seemed to be thanking me for rescuing her and making sure she was safe.(这只小鸟似乎在感谢我救了它,并确保它的安全。)
蜂鸟的出现是为了让“我”感到 amazed and touched(惊讶和感动),为了让我 be entranced(入迷),最终让我 treasure the memory(珍藏记忆)。

A determined 10-year-old girl Callie lived with her parents and older brother, Ben, on a quiet farm. Though she was small and thin, she loved helping with housework, especially feeding the horses in their big barn (畜棚). One side of the barn housed the horse stalls (马厩), while the other side was piled with hay bales (干草捆) for feeding.
One afternoon, Callie went into the barn to feed the horses. As she walked towards the tall stacks of hay, she suddenly stopped. A tiny, weak sound came through the dusty air. Meow... meow...
Her heart jumped. A kitten must be trapped in the hay! Breathing hard, she ran back to find Ben and her father. “Dad! Ben! Come quick! A kitten is stuck in the hay!” she called urgently. Ben sighed, putting down his tools. Her father looked doubtful. “Probably just the wind, Callie,” he said gently. But they followed her to the barn.
They stood quietly near the hay stacks, listening. The barn was silent. “Hear anything ” Ben asked. Their father shook his head. “Nothing, sweetheart. Maybe it was just a mouse. Don’t worry about it.” Disappointed, Callie watched them leave.
After dinner, Callie slipped back to the barn, determined. She stood still, listening attentively. And there it was again! Meow... meow... Weaker now, but clear. She raced back to the house. Her father was watching TV.
“Dad, please!” she pleaded (恳求). “I heard it again! It is a kitten! Please, just come check one more time ” He looked unwilling but saw the real worry in her eyes. “Alright, alright, one last look.”
He returned a few minutes later. “Callie, I listened hard. All I heard was an owl outside. No kitten. Try not to worry.” He gave her a tired smile. “Thanks for checking, Dad.” Callie whispered, though she still felt uneasy.

Near the bottom of a tall stack, she spotted a tiny movement-a small patch of gray fur barely visible between two enormous
bales. She rushed over and pushed the bales again, but
they wouldn’t move.

“I have no choice but to get help!” Callie thought to herself. She raced back home and quickly awoke Ben and their father. Seeing Callie’s worried face and absolute certainty, they both hurried with her back to the barn. Working together, Ben and their father carefully moved the heavy hay bales which Callie pointed at. Eventually, a narrow passage was revealed. There was a tiny gray kitten, its eyes wide with fright. Trembling and exhausted, it let out another pitiful meow. Carefully, Callie’s father reached in and gently held the little creature out. Callie’s heart
swelled with relief and joy as she looked at the rescued kitten,
safe and warm in her father’s large, gentle hands.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon when a family of four decided to explore the woods near their home. With their camping equipment, they embarked on a much-anticipated trip in the nearby woods, full of excitement.
Upon arrival, the parents set up the tent while their two children, Max and Emma, wandered around and looked for fun. They were especially thrilled, laughter echoing through the woods. Max, the big brother, proposed to go deeper into the woods and explore more. Emma followed.
As they walked along the narrow path, chatting and laughing, they suddenly heard a strange noise coming from a thick bush. Feeling a little bit scared, Emma came closer to her brother. Then, they noticed another sound. Even with the scare and nervousness, curiosity got the better of them. They carefully approached the source of that sound.
To their big surprise, they found a small, injured fox lying there, making some heartbroken sounds. Taking a closer look, Max found that one of her legs was bleeding, and she looked weak and scared. Emma’s heart ached at the sight of the poor creature. “We can't just leave her here. Let's do something,” she begged, looking determined. Max hesitated for a while and nodded in agreement.

Emma suggested coming back to the camping site and called their parents for help. But they worried the fox could be attacked by other bigger animals. Then Max decided to take the fox back. They knew they had to be extremely careful, not scaring the fox and not causing further injury.
Slowly, Max made his first attempt. He took off his coat and tried to gently place it over the fox. The fox, sensing Max's approach, struggled to run away but failed due to her bleeding leg. Max did another try. This time, he succeeded. He covered the fox carefully with his coat. The fox still whined(哀鸣) sadly, but didn't run away. With great care, they lifted the fox and carried her back.

A Fortunate Escape
Max, Ben and I were walking home together while I bit into the brown beef burger I had grabbed from a shop nearby. “Truth or dare, Ben ” Max questioned. It was a game we usually played to amuse ourselves on the lengthy, boring journey home. Ben wanted a dare. “Well, Ben, I dare you to carry my bag all the way home!” Max commanded.
As Ben pulled the heavy bag up his shoulder and adjusted the bag belts, he noticed that Max’ bag was partly open. When he quickly turned it around, an object flew out of the bag, and over the fence of our neighbor’s house.
“Oh, no,” Max shouted, “I think that was my English homework!” Stretching his hand out and trying to crawl (爬) under the fence to get the paper, Ben found that it was just out of reach.
“Well, I guess I’ll have to climb over the fence to get it,” Ben complained. He was barely able to climb up, using small gaps in the wooden fence as handholds, as the fence was nearly as tall as him, and low enough for something to be thrown over it.

Sliding down the fence, Ben grabbed the valued piece of paper, complaining about injured self-respect. Just then, a loud and terrifying bark cut his words short.
“Woof, woof!”
Our neighbor, Mr. Mason, owned a German Shepherd (德国牧羊犬), known for its fierceness, which guarded the house. It was something we had overlooked, too focused on getting back Max’s homework. Ben’s legs trembled uncontrollably and his face turned a deathly white as the German Shepherd advanced slowly on him like a wolf approaching its target.
Max and I stared at it, frozen with fear. Ben backed up against the fence, attempting to climb up, but a loud bark stopped him in his tracks. I desperately searched my mind for a sliver of an idea about how I could assist Ben. Should I climb up the fence and help Ben Or could I do something to distract the dog

Searching the road for stones, my eyes landed upon a brown object. It was the half-eaten burger that I had dropped in panic. All of a sudden, a silver of an idea came to me in a flash of inspiration — I could make good use of it to distract the dog. Dogs like beef! Every second counting, I swiftly picked up the beef burger, gathered all my strength and threw it at the fierce dog. Thankfully, giving way to the temptation of the delicious beef, the dog turned around and was quickly immersed in delicacy, ignoring the frozen
Ben. With a sigh of relief, Ben swiftly regained his focus and climbed
over the fence. Tightly hugged by Max and me, Ben gradually lifted his
spirits.

Afterwards, the three of us made our way home again. Strangely enough, the lengthy journey home didn’t seem that boring. In an instant, we began to amuse ourselves on Ben’s dare. Max apologized to Ben for the dare which had led to the entire adventure. However, Ben patted him on the back as if to show his forgiveness. Subsequently, squeezing my hands, Ben sincerely extended his gratitude, saying that without my wisdom and bravery, he could have been severely injured. I responded
jokingly that he owed me a new beef burger. Waves of laughter permeating
in the air, we awakened to the realization that timely help among friends
can break down any obstacle, changing a venture into a fortunate escape.
