When the writer James Joyce first traveled from Dublin to Trieste in 1904, he went through Paris, Zurich and Ljubljana. So when I received the invitation to be writer-in-residence at the James Joyce summer school in Trieste, I wondered if I might follow Joyce’s way. However, today’s train runs at nearly 200 mph, in comparison to the 25 mph-60 mph speeds at that time. But it still helps with getting inspirations.
Along the way, I considered the writers who traveled through Europe in this way 100years ago. And, importantly, what they would have seen. What we see from trains — and how we see it — reflects a century of change. But trains represent progress as much as they ever have, but — today — a different sort of progress.
In the early 20th century, rail passengers would have seen the hydroelectric revolution (水力发电革命). The revolution made a great difference, creating the dams, power lines and industrial infrastructure (基础设施) that we’re used to today. It also allowed writers to reach the Alps by electric train and represented progress, modernity and independence, as did the electric trains themselves.
When I arrived in Gare du Nord, instead of the posters mentioned by James Joyce, I found the walls now have climate change equations (方程式) from Liam Gillick’s artwork. But Gillick’s work doesn’t seem to explain the equations, or make them simple. Therefore, the important facts of climate change are at a remove from the general public. It still seems to be the case that many people don’t know that electric trains let us travel with much less pollution than air travel.
Trains are shared and sustainable. The exciting parts of train travel carry on into the 21st century: observing life and scenery, being part of a sustainable infrastructure and making one think. Air travel has undoubtedly speeded untold progress, but slow travel allows us to think in the longer term.
24.Why does the author want to follow Joyce’s way
A.To look for a job. B.To write an article.
C.To feel the progress. D.To seek writing ideas.
25.What’s the author’s comment on Gillick’s work
A.Hard to forget. B.Easy to learn from.
C.Difficult to understand. D.Meaningful to discuss.
26.Why does the train represent a different kind of progress now
A.It honors outstanding artists.
B.It shows the energy reform.
C.It produces much less noise.
D.It shows sustainability.
27.What’s the best title for the text
A.Train Travel in a Century of Change
B.Hydroelectric Revolution in the Past Century
C.Change in the Meaning of Progress
D.Importance of Slowing Train Travel Today
Imagine walking into a room filled with strangers. You haven’t spoken a word. You haven’t heard one either. Yet something is already being said. This is not magic. It’s the mind’s secret language. It’s the quiet feeling that stays with every talk we have. Human beings are language-related creatures, but long before you learned to talk, you were already a master of silent communication. The ability to sense others is the basis of human connection.
Most of the emotional information we send and receive doesn’t come through what we say — it comes through how we behave. Body language is the silent symphony (交响乐) of every social interaction. Take facial expressions. Charles Darwin, in his lesser-known book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, pointed out that emotions like fear, anger, joy, and sadness are expressed similarly across cultures — and he was right. Paul Ekman’s research later showed that six basic emotions are recognized worldwide.
But the face is just the start. The rest of the body plays too. Often, your body gives away what your words are trying to hide. These signals operate below the level of conscious (有意识的) control. It’s fast. And often, more truthful than speech.
The eyes have long been called the window to the soul — and now been proven by studies. Eye contact starts a series of brain activities tied to attention, trust, and understanding. Eye contact increases connection, improves teamwork, and increases persuasion. But different cultures explain it differently — what feels honest in one culture may seem unfriendly in another.
We live in a world filled with words. Still, we must ask: what happens when we over-depend on words and ignore the unspoken Actually, to reconnect, we must look up, lean in, watch more than we speak and listen not just to what is said, but to what is felt. When we become savvy about the mind’s secret language, we don’t just connect more. We understand more. And that understanding is the beginning of healing, of creation, of peace.
28.Why does the author give an example at the beginning
A.To present an unusual fact.
B.To introduce the key to connection.
C.To show the role of silent language.
D.To point out weaknesses of language.
29.How do people express their feelings through body language
A.By adding some spoken language.
B.By connecting facial and hand language.
C.By doing conscious body actions.
D.By giving uncontrolled signals.
30.What do studies find about eye contact
A.It causes brain responses.
B.It’s necessary in teamwork.
C.It benefits cultural interaction.
D.It’s recognized worldwide.
31.What do the underlined words “savvy about” mean in paragraph 5
A.Skilled in. B.Careful about.
C.Adapted to. D.Interested in.
The Wuyi Mountains are located in the northwest of Fujian Province. The mountains rise over 9,000 feet above sea level and are known as the “Roof of Fujian”. Nine streams flow through the region, creating a wonderful view.
The Wuyi Mountains are not only known for their natural beauty but also for the tea they produce. Before the Song Dynasty, the most famous tea came from Beiyuan in Jianzhou. Later, Wuyi Rock Tea won recognition from officials in the capital. As a result, Wuyi Rock Tea replaced Beiyuan tea in popularity.
The Wuyi Rock Tea grows in the unpolluted mountains. Its nature is gentle and not overly cold, and it can be stored for a long time. The longer it is stored, the clearer its flavor becomes and the better its taste. In terms of medicinal benefits, it refreshes the mind, reduces worries, cleanses the body, and so on. Regular consumption (饮用) is considered a health choice.
The production of rock tea was firstly started by residents in the mountains. Later, local residents took up the practice, but it was the tea businessmen from Zhangzhou and Quanzhou who truly developed and enlarged the industry. Every spring, these businessmen would bring money and travel north along the river to manage the picking and processing (加工) of tea. By early autumn, they would pack their goods and return downstream.
Regarding the harvesting and processing techniques, tea leaves are only picked at the right time of year, no more than once. The harvested leaves are sorted using a screening method to separate them by size before processing. Furthermore, the processing is all done by hand. Only leaves that have the desired red edges (边缘) and green centers are considered top-quality.
Since tea plants are long-lived crops, with proper care and suitable environmental conditions, they can survive for centuries. There are countless good varieties (品种) in the Wuyi Mountains, which could provide valuable resources for breeding (育种) research. If these varieties were studied and selectively bred, it could make a great contribution to the tea industry.
32.What lifted Wuyi Rock Tea’s popularity to a new height
A.Great growing environment.
B.High production and sales.
C.Increased taste and quality.
D.Praises from capital officials.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The growth of Wuyi Rock Tea plants.
B.The advantages of Wuyi Rock Tea.
C.The storage of Wuyi Rock Tea.
D.The effects of tea consumption.
34.What drove the industrialization of Wuyi Rock Tea
A.The exploration of local people.
B.The money from the government.
C.The efforts of southern traders.
D.The spread of processing techniques.
35.How do tea plants from the Wuyi Mountains benefit the tea industry
A.By providing better tastes.
B.By producing more leaves.
C.By providing excellent varieties.
D.By attracting valuable resources.

六、书面表达
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I used to work retail at a family-run costume (服装) store. We had this family who were regular customers and would come in every year and pick out themed Halloween (万圣节) costumes as a family.
That particular year, they had a son who was about four or five at that time. He chose to be Captain America, and they picked out his costume first. A little while later, he came running back to the cash register, in full costume, holding a phone. He had found it on the floor and thought that he had to protect it because phones were very important. He also asked if I could help him find who it had belonged to. I made a store announcement asking if anybody was missing a phone, but it was to no effect. I asked him if he could give me the phone, adding that I would hold on to it until someone came back for it.
He looked at me questioningly and flatly refused to hand it over at first. He said that phones had all kinds of important things on them and that they were not toys. I gave him my serious word that I would take good care of the phone. Finally he handed it over, and I sent him back to his parents.
A few minutes later, the phone started ringing, and I noticed that the screen said “home”, so I answered it. It was, of course, the customer who was looking for her phone. I told her where she could find it and that I would hold on to it for her. When the woman came into the store asking for the phone, I asked her if she was in a hurry and if she minded holding on for just a moment. She was a little confused and thought I was asking for payment. Looking a bit unhappy, she then took out 50 dollars to give me. Her behavior put me in a very embarrassing situation due to her misunderstanding of my intentions.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I went back and found the little Captain America who was still in costume.

When I arrived, the secretary walked me to the editor’s office. He read my handwritten story and said he really enjoyed it and would include it in his next week’s edition. My heart jumped with joy but I wanted even more. I asked him if I could keep writing for him each week. He thought about it for a moment and agreed. He even said he would pay me five dollars for each new thing I wrote. I was so happy that I danced when I got outside. Little did I know that moment would change my whole life. I continued to write and each time I learned something new I wrote it as a story and my editor friend published it. Without the kind editor I never would have become the writer I am today.

I went back and found the little Captain America who was still in costume. It seemed that he was still looking for the owner of the phone and I asked him if he would like to return the phone to its owner in person. He replied gleefully that he would. I handed him the phone, and we walked back to the front together. He presented the woman with her phone and explained to her that he had found it and taken good care of it because he knew how important phones were. The woman thanked him heartily.
At that point, the woman decided to buy something as a thank-you. She explained that what the boy had done might be the cutest thing she had ever seen. She added seriously that we had no idea how much she had needed the phone and that it had been a tough day. She bought some candies for the boy but he refused to accept them. She then secretly asked me to give them to the boy when the family left my store. I was glad she had got her phone back. Beyond the fun of Halloween, this warm moment shows that kindness is the most precious “costume” one can wear, brightening others’ days in unexpected ways.
