I’m usually running late. Research suggests about 20% of the US population are habitually late.“Most habitually late people truly dislike being late, but it’s a surprisingly difficult habit to overcome,”explains time-management consultant Diana Delonzor in Never Be Late Again.
I hate being late too. I always feel guilty at showing up late, whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or a workout class. And New York City naturally has plenty of time-consuming obstacles(traffic jams, long lines, etc.)that can pop up without notice,so consistently running late makes my daily stress levels go up further.
Even worse, experts say being consistently slow and late signals that someone is easily distracted (分神的),disorganized,self-centred and generally inconsiderate. Since I don’t believe I possess any of the above qualities,I recently decided it was time to get my time-management skills in order. For one week,I committed myself to following these expert-sourced tips for being a more quick and punctual human being.
There are several reasons why people are repeatedly late. According to Delonzor, some fit the classic“absent-minded professor”type:they’re easily distracted, misplacing car keys or completely forgetting appointments;others are persons with a compulsive desire for thrilling activities and adventures, and they love the thrill of being late. For me,it really boils down to a false sense of being productive,or what some experts call “One More Task Syndrome”. Whenever I have to go somewhere,I feel like I need to do just one last thing before I leave, which in turn causes me to fall behind schedule.
To put an end to this last-minute dash,I tried to distinguish between tasks that I absolutely must do
and tasks that can wait. Do I really have to empty the dishwasher before leaving for work?Do I really have to pick up my dry cleaning? No!Research shows that people who try to do more than one thing at a time are more likely to be late for work.
It turns out that Mom was right all along. When I was a child, she would insist that I lay out my clothes for the next day on my bed, hoping it would cut down on the endless waiting time for me to get ready for school the next morning. So,at 27,I followed her advice:every night,I picked out my clothes
for the next day. I put my keys, wallet, and iPhone in the same place by the front door. This saved me tons of time and decision-making on busy mornings.
People tend to underestimate how long a task will take them to complete, since we base our predictions on an excessively optimistic view of the past. Delonzor calls it“magical thinking”,something that habitually late people love to put themselves in.
To overcome this bad habit,I had to re-learn how long certain tasks actually take. Sure,Google Maps say it will take 10 minutes to walk to that restaurant, but really,it’s going to take 15 minutes. I finally accepted that I couldn’t underestimate the time that things would take. I got over my overly optimistic thinking, drew up a new schedule, and ended up arriving a few minutes early almost everywhere I went.
Being late is a catch-22:although I am anxious about it,I’m equally as anxious as about arriving early. To correct the latter, experts suggest being prepared to wait. Just as Fabrega puts it,waiting time
doesn’t have to be wasted time. Therefore,I suggest bringing a book everywhere you go,or pre-loading
interesting articles to the Pocket app.
After one week of following these tips,I couldn’t see myself ever going back to my old,time-pressed ways. This experiment made me realize it’s possible-without much effort at all-to feel more in control and less anxious on any given day. I also felt much more like a responsible adult when I consistently showed up on time to do all my duties, personal and professional.
37.Why was the author consistently late?
A.She was always absent-minded. B.She loved the thrill of being late.
C.She had many emergencies to handle. D.She hoped to spend her time productively.
38.What really made the author determine to break her bad habit?
A.Her poor image. B.Her low stress levels.
C.The tips she got from experts. D.The request from her family members.
39.What does“magical thinking”in Paragraph 7 mean?
A.Failing to get real about timing.
B.Making better arrangements of time.
C.Allowing enough time to complete a task.
D.Accurately predicting how much time one needs.
40.The underlined word“catch-22”in Paragraph 9 can be replaced by“ ▲ ”.
A.trap B.dilemma C.misfortune D.impossibility
