Students work in pairs and find Zhuang and Yao nationalities in the map and enjoy the video. Answers: Zhuang and Yao nationalities live in Guangxi Province. The video is about Longji Rice Terraces built by Zhuang and Yao poeple in Guangxi Province. To introduce the topic and arouse the students’ interest.
Read for information 1.Ask the students to skim the passage and match the paragraphs with main ideas. 2.Get the key words for each paragraph about the Longji Rice Terraces(Pay attention to key sentences in each paragraph). Students read the passage quickly and then match. 3.Students find the answers while reading Para.3 carefully. Reasons: few large, flat areas of land; steep mountains and shallow soil. Results: more areas; more rainwater and more soil. The reason why people built the terraces is that they wanted to increase the flat areas, catch the rainwater and prevent the soil from being washed away. 4.After reading carefully, students retell as follows: Rainwater moves down the mountains along hundreds of waterways. The sun heats the water in terraces and turn it into vapour. This forms clouds from which rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again. Water gathers in the terraces and becomes a perfect environment for birds and fish, some of which are natural enemies for insects. After reading carefully students give their answers: 1) Terraces carry valuable tradition and culture. 2) The knowledge is passed down. New generations continue to use ancient methods of agriculture. The Longji Rice attract thousands of visitors. Help students to understand the details of the passage and further to grasp the relevant topic. Try to help students to apply to the writing. The most important thing is to help students catch the main idea: respect and live in harmony with nature.
