Xu Haifeng has been ambitious to become a sharpshooter since childhood. Through years of strictly self-disciplined practicing, the determined Xu trained himself to be a real crack shot (神枪手) despite the lack of professional regular shooting training.
He won the first gold winner of the 23rd Olympic Games, who was China’s first Olympic gold winner. Xu Haifeng, the creator of the country’s history
of Olympic golds, froze the
breath-taking shot at the 23rd
Games and since then began a
new era of China’s Olympic
history. He will be remembered
as a sports hero and a legend.
Since retired in 1994, he has gradually switched his career toward coaching:

Wayne Gretzky was a professional hockey player who played in the NHL until 1999. Nicknamed “The Great One”, he is arguably the most famous hockey player of all time, and most agree he is the best hockey player of all time. Outside of hockey, Gretzky has become famous
for his inspirational quote:
“You miss 100% of the shots
you don’t take”. Wayne Gretzky
set 61 NHL scoring records
through his 21 year career.
Originally from Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Wayne Gretzky began playing hockey when he was just three years old. His father, Walter Gretzky, dedicated (致力于) his life to making sure Wayne had everything he needed to become a successful hockey player. Walter build a backyard rink (溜冰场) full with
boards and lights so he could
help Wayne practise at night.
Walter spent countless hours on the backyard rink with Wayne and his brothers and taught him important insights to the game. At the age of six, Wayne Gretzky was playing youth hockey in a league with boys a few years older than him.
In 1977, Gretzky was the
youngest player and
leading scorer at the
Junior World Cup
tournament held in Montreal.
Isinbayeva was enrolled (招收) by her parents in gymnastics school at age 4, but a growth spurt (猛长) when she was 15 suddenly made her too tall to compete effectively in the sport; she eventually reached a height of 1.73 meters. Pole-vault coach Yevgeny Trofimov invited her to try that sport, and the next season, in July 1998, she vaulted 4 metres. She won the 1999 world youth title and the 2000 world junior title, and in 2001 she broke both indoor and outdoor junior world records.
Isinbayeva, who developed a reputation for calm confidence and for jumping her highest at important competitions, was dubbed “Bubka in a skirt” by Russian sportswriters who deemed her prolific (得分多的) record —setting reminiscent of (使人想起的) former men’s world-record holder Sergey Bubka.
Therefore, we can learn from them such qualities as: self-belief, hard work, strong willpower, determination, perseverance, responsibility, creativity, confidence etc.
