1. Can you use reported speech to rewrite the quotes
to report: to tell somebody what you have heard or seen.
If we write a sentence with the reported speech, we usually talk about what another person said in our own words. We need to use a reported clause. We also need to make changes to the pronouns, time, place and even the tense. When stating a truth, we do not need to change the tense.

2. Why do you think the author chose to use quotes instead of reported speech in the passage
The author chose to use quotes in the passage to tell readers how the three artists get their inspiration or muses for their artworks, and by adding these quotes, the passage appears more believable and more convincing.
