Teenage Life around the WorldAsha, Tanzania
Hi! I’m Asha from Tanzania. Like most teenagers, I start my day early and end it late. After school, I learn with my partner to prepare for the University Entrance Exam. When I have time off, I prefer to be outdoors. I love nature and animals. I feel quite annoyed at how humans treat the environment, so I do my best to help. I volunteer to plant trees and I’m a member of our school’s Nature Club.Samika, Bangladesh
Hi! I’m Samika and I’m slim. I wish I were a student, but I’m not. I had to leave school at 13 to help my family. I work in a dress factory. It’s unbelievable hard work and we sweat all day long. Although everyone works hard, my partners and I still find time to practice push-ups and jogging together. At times like these, the world feels like an amazing place.Lila, USA
Hi! I’m Lila, an outgoing guy from Chicago. I’m a senior high school freshman. I love my art and debate lectures — they allow me to meet guys who share the same types of view and build up my confidence. After school, I volunteer at a senior center, helping the seniors at their detailed requests. On weekends, I explore the nature with my parents or play soccer with local junior athletes. I live a positive life.Frieder, Germany
Hi, Frieder here. I go to a high school in Munich. I’m not very interested in lessons, but I know I have to get an education. It’s very difficult for young people to find a job in Europe, so I am anxious about my future. I’m a gaming lover. I love Internet games so much that I have started a gaming club at my school. Maybe I’ll see you online — my screen name is FastFreedy.

My family lost almost everything in the little-known but worst flood of Louisiana last year. It began raining in mid-August and didn’t stop for days. There was talk that the local rivers were going to crest (到达洪峰) and cause some serious flooding. We lived somewhat close to the Amite River, but old neighbours told us our neighbourhood hadn’t flooded in over 100 years. We thought we had several days to plan on how to shelter.
On August 13, I woke up and headed toward the river. Some of the lower areas were collecting water but there was no standing water anywhere near my house or even my neighbourhood. I went back home and told my wife we should probably get some supplies in case this got serious; that maybe we should even pack a car in case we needed to leave though I was very certain there was nothing to worry about.
About 30 minutes into slowly packing, my wife’s cousin came and told us to evacuate at once. I looked behind her and noticed my yard underwater and the waterline only about a half- inch from going over my doorstep and into my house. I was floored. We had no time! My wife and I packed up both our cars in about 10 minutes with only our most precious (珍贵的) memories. Everything else we had built during a 10-year marriage was left behind.
We evacuated about 5 miles east away from the river to my wife’s grandmother’s. After being there for about an hour, the river was coming. We evacuated a second time in as many hours to her cousin’s house even further east. After only an hour, we found the river was on the way and we had to leave, again.
We evacuated three times that day. I drove back through the flooded waters at some point because we left our cat. When I got back to our house, I walked through knee-deep water filled with rubbish and our waterlogged belongings (浸水的财物). Got the cat safely though.
4.Why did the author slowly prepare to leave at first
A.Because there were too many supplies.
B.Because he wanted to get his car repaired.
C.Because no standing water appeared nearby.
D.Because he had to wait for his wife’s cousin.

C.His wife’s grandmother’s. D.His wife’s cousin’s house.
7.What can be known about the flood
A.It lasted for a month. B.It destroyed many cars.
C.It came very slowly. D.It caused much damage.
Everybody hates rats (老鼠). But in the areas where there are many earthquakes, such as Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey, rats will soon be man’s friends.
What happens after an earthquake We send in rescue dogs. Why Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornel University, New York says, “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
8.How can the rescuers know whether there are survivors in the new research project
A.By the noise made by the rat.
B.By the rat’s unusual behaviour.
C.By the smell given off by the trapped person.
D.By the signal sent by the radio on the rat’s back.
9.Rats have all the following advantages EXCEPT that ______.
A.they are less expensive to train than dogs
B.they are quicker to find the trapped people than dogs
C.they don’t need electricity compared with rescue robots
D.they are small and can get into smaller spaces than dogs
10.What’s Julie Ryan’s attitude towards “rat project”
A.Anxious. B.Curious. C.Positive. D.Confused.
11.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage
A.People’s attitude towards rats may change.
B.The project has already been widely used in earthquake rescue.
C.Rats will replace dogs and robots in earthquake rescue work soon.
D.Rats are more popular than dogs in areas with frequent earthquakes.
Speaking more than one language could be connected to slower aging, according to a new study. An international team of researchers looked at data (数据) from more than 86,000 adults from 27 European countries. They were all aged between 51 and 90.
The researchers used this data to create models of people’s “biological (生物的) age” based on their physical and mental health, and compared it to the number of years they had actually lived. They found that people from countries where people mostly speak only one language were about twice as likely to have a biological age that was older than their real age.
And people from countries where people usually speak more than one language were 2.17times less likely to be aging faster than their real age. In fact, the more languages people usually spoke, the less likely they were to age faster. Experts have said that at least half of the world’s population speaks more than one language. However, up to 75% of people who speak English as a first language only speak English.
The benefits of learning a second language are clear, according to the study. The researchers said people should be encouraged to keep their brains active by learning and using more languages. This is something that governments could think about as a way to help protect people’s health, they added. They described language learning as a low-cost way to improve our health as we get older.
But experts say learning or speaking more languages isn’t the only way to slow our aging. According to the American Heart Association, there are eight key things you can do to slow your body’s aging: eat better; sleep well, stay active, don’t smoke, and manage your weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol (胆固醇).
12.What is the main finding of the study
A.Learning languages helps the mind. B.Getting older affects language skills.
C.Exercise is good for learning languages. D.Speaking more languages can slow down aging.
13.How did researchers decide people’s biological age
A.By testing language skills. B.By measuring blood pressure.
C.By checking health of body and mind. D.By studying how people communicate.
14.What is the researchers’ suggestion according to paragraph 4
A.Keeping brains active by exercising. B.Encouraging people to learn more languages.
C.Improving health through cheap methods. D.Asking governments to reduce health costs.
15.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph
A.To show other ways to slow aging. B.To compare different research results.
C.To introduce the best way to keep healthy. D.To present health organizations’ study results.
How to deal with your nervousness before exams
How to deal with your nervousness before exams 16 Here are some dos and don’ts that might help you with your exams.
Don’t arrive too early.
You probably arrive early before an exam, but it’s not a good idea to get there too early. When you’re revising with friends, you might get more anxious. Instead, try to get there five to ten minutes earlier and keep yourself from talking about the exam to anybody.
Do sleep well.
17 When your nervous system is not rested, you’ll feel more anxious. Also, you will have a harder time concentrating. So, instead of studying deep into the night, you should work on getting a regular sleep pattern.
18
If you’ve worked hard, and you are ready, you don’t need this. Going over notes on the day of the exam might make you feel like you’ve missed out on some topics. So you had better just be rested and relaxed for the exam and do the best that you can.
Do eat well.
Don’t forget to have a good meal. We tend to forget to eat when we’re too anxious, but eating is necessary. Your brain needs sugar to work properly. You have to eat something before taking an exam. 19
Don’t think about the result of the exam.
Before and during an exam, don’t think about the result. 20 You should not think about your grades, your chances of getting into college, and your family’s opinion, etc. Try to separate yourself from anything else.
A.Stay concentrated on the present.
B.Don’t revise on the day of the exam.
C.How to revise better to get a good grade
D.How to prepare yourself better for the coming exam
E.It will give you more energy and lower your anxiety level.
F.Lack of sleep is a huge factor in increasing your nervousness.
G.Do summarize your notes into key points for last-minute review.

Jack and Tom were neighbors and best friends. They went to the same high school, sat next to each other in class, and shared everything with each other — from their favorite snacks to their deepest secrets. In fact, they were more like brothers who stuck together through every small trouble and happy moment.
One day, their school held a big science fair competition with exciting prizes for the top projects. Both boys worked very hard on their designs for weeks: Jack focused on a solar powered small car, while Tom spent hours building a model of a rainwater collection system. They even helped each other test their projects after school. Finally, Jack’s project won first prize, while Tom’s project did not win anything at all. At the award ceremony, Jack was extremely excited. In his excitement, he talked on and on about his project and victory, answering every question from the teachers and students without noticing the others around him. Tom stood silently by Jack’s side, trying to put on a happy smile, but his eyes were filled with disappointment.
After that day, Tom began to act distant. He didn’t come over to play video games as usual, and at school he hardly spoke to Jack, even when they passed each other in the hallway. Jack couldn’t understand why his best friend had suddenly become so cold and distant. A week later, Jack heard from his mother that Tom had been very upset about the competition result. Only then did Jack realize that he had never congratulated Tom on his hard effort or acknowledged Tom’s help with his own project. Instead, he had bragged(吹嘘) about himself without thinking about Tom’s feelings at all.
Jack felt terrible. Winning the science fair was not worth losing his best friend. He decided to make things right.

There are several reasons for my choice. Firstly, walking is a more gentle form of exercise that suits people of all ages and fitness levels. Secondly, walking allows me to enjoy the surrounding scenery at a comfortable pace. Lastly, walking helps me relax both physically and mentally, leaving me refreshed.
In conclusion, while jogging is a good way to burn calories quickly, walking is a better fit for me as it is safer and more pleasant.

That Saturday, Jack took a deep breath and knocked on Tom’s door. He held a handmade thank-you card and a small gift — a set of tools Tom had been wanting for weeks. When Tom opened the door, Jack looked into his eyes and said sorry sincerely. He admitted that he was too proud of his victory to notice Tom’s disappointment, and he emphasized that Tom’s project was creative and practical, even better than his in some ways. He also thanked Tom for helping him adjust the solar car’s battery again and again after school.
Tom’s eyes widened at Jack’s words and a smile spread across his face. He stepped aside to let Jack in, saying that he had also missed their time together these days. He explained that he was not angry about losing the competition, but just felt a little sad that Jack didn’t care about his feelings. The two boys then sat on the floor, talking about their projects and planning to improve them together. Their laughter echoed in the room, making the afternoon warm and bright.
