On November 8, a large new airship called Pathfinder 1 made its first test flights (飞行) in California. The airship was built by LTA Research, a company that’s hoping to make an old method of transportation new again.
The new airship is at 400 feet long, it’s far longer than a football field. It’s the largest airship of its kind since the 1930s. But the Pathfinder 1 is built using many new ideas, and new materials.
Unlike planes, airships fly because they are full of gas that is lighter than air. Airships were especially popular in the early 1900s. They were used for transportation, for spying, and were even used in war. But most of that ended in 1937, after an airship called the Hindenburg caught fire and burned as it was landing. Hydrogen gas, which does burn, was responsible for this accident. The accident scared people away from airships. By that time, planes were improving quickly. From then on, most air travel focused on (关注于) airplanes.
Now, a company called LTA (Lighter Than Air) Research is hoping to change that. The money for LTA comes from Sergey Brin, one of the two people who started Google. He hired (聘用) Alan Weston to run LTA.Both men have always liked airships. And they believe airships can be used to move people and materials quickly and without polluting.
From the outside, Pathfinder 1 looks similar to the airships of the 1930s. But Pathfinder 1 is completely new. For one thing, the ship gets its lift from Helium—a gas that does not burn. The Pathfinder 1 has 12 electric motors (电动机). The motors make it possible for the airship to take off and land without a runway. The Pathfinder 1 can fly at speeds of up to 75 mph.
Pathfinder 1 can carry about 4 tons of people and things. LTA hopes to show that airships can provide a low-pollution way to move cargo (货物) over a long way. Mr. Brin is especially interested in using airships to help people out in emergency situations, such as after an earthquake or a hurricane, when roads are closed and there’s no place for planes to land.

Science shows why we trust people who are confident. Imagine this: one person tells a lie confidently, while another says something true in a hesitant voice. Which person would you trust
According to British scientist Dean Burnett, humans are far more likely to believe information expressed confidently by a confident person or in some other ways using confident language.
“Humans trusting confident people over those who are more uncertain is a known thing,” wrote Burnett for Science Focus magazine. “When two people are trying to make a decision but each person says different things, confidently expressed arguments are seen as passing on better information, which decides the decision.”
Why is this the case As Burnett said, humans are social animals. In our ancient past, most of our information about the world came from our tribe (部落), the people around us. So, if ancient humans heard someone confidently saying “There’s a tiger coming.”
On a more personal level, we use our own experiences to understand what other people do and say. That’s how our brain works. When we are confident, it’s for good reason. Therefore, they must have good reason, too.
However, we need to realize that confidently expressed information may be more persuasive (有说服力的), but that doesn’t mean it’s correct. As Burnett wrote, we are living in a more and more different world. Trusting very confident people without checking the facts can lead to “unexpected results”.

B.To ask people to live in the tribe.
C.To explain why we trust people who are confident.

How much do you know about whales, a kind of fantastic animals They are huge, beautiful, and interesting animals on Earth. Are they fish Although they look like fish and their homes are in the sea, in fact, they aren’t fish. Let’s learn more about them.
It’s amazing to think how big whales are. Blue whales are the largest among all kinds of whales. They are also the biggest animals on Earth. Some of them are more than 33 meters long, and each of them weighs about 150~180 tons. A blue whale is even heavier than 24 elephants. A new baby blue whale weighs as much as a big elephant. The blue whale also has the largest heart in the world. It can be as heavy as 180 kg.
Whales feed on sea life. Some whales eat seals (海豹) and fish. One interesting fact is that some whales have teeth, while others don’t. Another interesting fact is that whales must come to the surface of the water to take in air. So they often jump out of the water.
Though whales need to take in air, they can’t stay on beaches for a long time. Beaches are not safe places for them. They need to stay in the sea. For whales, the mistake of landing on beaches is dangerous. They may lose their lives.
Some kinds of whales are in danger because people catch them for meat, fat, and oil. Whale parts are sold to make things like candles and soap. We should try our best to protect whales. Stopping the killing of whales and fighting ocean pollution are two useful ways to protect them. When seeing a whale on the beach, try to save it.

The art of paper
Chen Zijiang is a paper-cutting expert whom I interviewed for my article on Chinese Art. Paper-cutting is something that he learned to do from an early age.
It is a Chinese folk (民间的) art with a long history. Paper cuts of animals have been found in tombs which date back to the time of the Northern and Southern Dynasty. 73 A young farmer who wanted a wife would look at a young woman’s paper-cutting skills before marrying her. Mr Chen explained, laughing at the look of surprise on my face.
Mr Chen went on to explain that there are three types of paper cuts which people still make today: paper cuts for decoration, for religious (宗教的) purposes and for design patterns.
74 They are usually put up during holidays to bring good luck. They are also used on presents. A present for parents whose child has recently been born might show a paper cut of children, for example. 75
Paper cuts used for religious purposes are often found in temples. 76 People to whom the dead person was related would make these offerings on special days and during festivals.
The third kind of paper cuts are those used to make patterns on clothing. They are also sometimes used to decorate jewellery boxes. 77
The interview was very useful as I got a lot of interesting information for my article. I was also ready to try out paper cutting for myself. “See you next week,” I said as I waved goodbye to Mr Chen. I was going to meet him again so that he could help me make my first paper cut!
A.It is a kind of amazing art.
B.Paper-cutting has a long history.
C.They are also used as offerings to the dead.
D.Dragons are very popular patterns for these designs.
E.Paper cuts used for decoration are often seen on windows and gates.
F.By the Southern Song Dynasty, paper-cutting had become an important part of everyday life.
G.Paper cuts which show the Chinese double happiness are often put up to celebrate weddings.

Dear Mike,
I’m glad to hear that you want to know about Chinese traditional festivals. My favorite festival is the Spring Festival, which falls on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. During this time, we eat traditional dishes like dumplings and fish, which symbolize wealth and good luck. We also set off fireworks, paste red couplets, and give lucky money to children.
I like it best because it brings family members together. We share happiness and hopes for the new year. It shows the importance of family and traditional culture in China.
I hope you can spread it to others. Best wishes!
