For me, growth begins immediately after I am able to accept my mistakes and admit team efforts.
When I was elected president of the student union, campus officials congratulated me saying I was quite adequate for the job. Before long, we had built a community of people who liked climbing the mountain near
our campus. We started out with a small group of hikers, and then the number of participants increased.
One day on campus, I met a woman in a wheelchair called Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn't and she would never. I told her to stay positive and not to give up admiring the beauty of the summit. Grace agreed to have a go. We all took turns grabbing a corner of her chair as we carried her 1.7 miles to the top. This was probably one of the most magical and deeply meaningful things I did in college.
With the support of my community and hikers, no one was surprised that I had won the election. The first thing I did as president was hang a sign outside the Student Union Office that read, “Under New Management!” I was proud of my coming accomplishment.
Absolute power changed me absolutely. My ego, my arrogance and my pride were out of control. I began speaking down to people, demanding they listen to me because I thought I knew what was best. Seldom did I join the hikers to climb the mountain, arguing it was a waste of time. My friends and supporters tried to communicate to me that I had changed,
and that I was abusing my position, but I wasn't listening.
A public conflict with the female vice-president about where to build a coffeehouse opened the floodgates for others who were upset with me. They claimed that I had made wrong decisions and that I was unqualified for the job. “Resign! Resign!” the posters of their requests would soon be everywhere on campus. My whole world collapsed. I couldn't figure out why a wonderfully enriching experience as president suddenly turned into one of my worst nightmares(噩梦).

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew
vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella's, with its delicate tulips(郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing
into a large black funnel(漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella's garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to
check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris(碎片) spread everywhere.
I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom's usual words rang in my ears, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” and my family started to think about how we could help.

The bustling heart of Boston seemed to stretch on endlessly, much like the hardships that had befallen a woman named Ara Bolster. For two long years, Bolster had been homeless. Every day was a struggle for survival. Every night was a battle against hopelessness. Bolster would often find herself in tears, her gaze lost in the labyrinth(迷宫) of city streets. “I had
been in tears, thinking to myself,” she recalled later. “When is the tide going to turn?”
But little did she know that her tide was about to turn in the most unexpected way.
Despite her circumstances, Bolster had always loved to sing. On occasion, she would find comfort in her voice, using it to drown the noise of the city and the clamor(喧闹) of her own troubles. One day, as she sang on a street corner, her voice caught the ear of a stranger.
Matt Shearer, a radio news reporter, had been out covering another story but found himself captivated by the woman's song. There was something raw and real in her voice that touched him deeply. He approached Bolster and struck up a conversation, sensing that there was a greater story here than the one he had initially set out to find.
As they talked, Bolster shared with Shearer what mattered most to her—a song she had written during her darkest hours. The lyrics were scribbled(潦草地写) on a piece of cardboard that had once served as her
mattress(床垫) at night. The melody existed only in her mind, but it was a tune that held great significance for her. This song was not just words; it was her life story, her pain, her joy, and her hope all rolled into one powerful anthem(赞歌).
Shearer was moved by Bolster's passion for her music and her desire to share it with the world. He knew deep down that he could help make this dream a reality.

Luckily, Shearer had brought in a team of experts—an

had been Bolster's beacon of hope during her toughest times
now filled the room with its raw, emotional energy, capturing
the push and pull of love's complex dance. “I was blown
away,” Shearer exclaimed, his voice heavy with awe. “Her

What happened next
was nothing short of miraculous: her song struck a chord with

about money; it was about transforming despair into hope,
invisibility into recognition, and most profoundly, forging an
unbreakable bond of friendship that defied all expectations. In
a world often shadowed by harshness and despair, their story
shines brightly, standing as a testament to the power of
human empathy and support, which can have a ripple effect

It was a hot day in Florida. The school year had just ended and it was time for summer vacation. We had just got a little black dog who we named One-Eyed. We chose that name because he could only see out of one eye.
Everybody wanted to do something for the dog: feed him, teach him
tricks and take long walks with him. Everybody was so happy to have this active, playful and shaggy new addition to our family. Everybody, that is, except my mom and me.
All my mom saw when she looked at the dog was someone else to clean up after. Shedding, messy, muddy, he pounced all over the house. All Mom seemed to care about was getting the house cleaned. My mom began to put disinfectant(消毒剂) in the bathtub. When Mom started cleaning, I decided to move out of the way. Actually, getting out of the way is a move I'd been practicing for a long time.
Being the youngest in my family has had its advantages, of course. More than a few times I was spoiled or everyone said I was the cutest. But being the youngest also came with its fair share of troubles. “You're too young!” “You'll mess this up!” they'd often say. I knew that my family loved me but I couldn't wait to show them I could do things by myself.
Every time I asked my brother or my sister if I could pet One-Eyed, they would shout, “No!” or tell me that I had germs and if I touched One-Eyed he would die!I really believed them. Once I even confessed to my mom that I touched the dog when no one noticed. At first,my
mom seemed very confused about what I was telling her, but then she realized. My mom scolded my brother and sister, “You'd better stop teasing your little brother!” Little brother! That's exactly what I was. That really got my blood boiling! Secretly, I decided, “I'll show them what a little kid can do!”

and barked excitedly, soon turning the bathroom into a wet

it turned into a disaster! Panicked by the scene, I ran out to
seek help, only to find my mom at the door.

Instead of scolding me, she bent down and gave me a gentle

An Insignificant Task
The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. On that day, every boy and girl was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.
As with everything, some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been the most responsible during the previous year, and those children were the ones who most looked forward to this day. Among them, Rita stood out. She was a kind and quiet girl. During the previous year she had carried out the teacher's instructions perfectly. All the children knew Rita was the favorite to be given the best job of all: to look after the class dog.
But this year there was a big surprise. Each child received one of the normal jobs, like preparing the books for the lessons, telling the time, cleaning the blackboard, or looking after one of the pets. However, Rita's job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Even though the teacher insisted that this ant was a very special ant, Rita could not help feeling disappointed. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. They sympathized with her and remarked how unfair it was that she had been given that job.
Yet, Rita, who liked her teacher very much, chose to prove her worth through excellence. “I will turn this little task into something great,” Rita said to herself. What she didn't know was that the teacher had secretly entered her for a rainforest insect raising competition.

Returning to Roots
As the economic downturn cast a shadow, my life also took an unexpected turn. The company I had worked for over a decade laid me off, leaving me frustrated with the high cost of urban living. It was time to leave and return to my roots—a rural farmhouse I had inherited from my
grandfather.
Driving back to the countryside recalled a flood of memories—the country road, the wooden cottage, the backyard garden...Yes! The garden! As a child, that garden was a magical place for me, an oasis(绿洲) bursting with colors and life. The bright sunflowers, elegant lilies and a wooden swing had been my playground, where my imagination ran wild among the fluttering(飞舞的) butterflies. I can well remember the gardening time spent with my grandfather. I would follow him around
with a small watering can, often more water landing on my shoes than on the thirsty plants. Those were moments of pure joy and laughter, echoed by the splash(溅泼声) and my grandfather's gentle laugher.
However, as we approached, my heart sank. The house, once full of rural charm, stood neglected. Windows broken and faded paint falling off the walls, all are filled with the unpleasant smell. I hesitated to take a step further. What would my beloved oasis be like I dared not imagine.
In contrast, my children, Emma and Jack, were immediately attracted.
With delight, they dashed into the house, exploring and playing just as I had at their age. When they opened the door of the backyard, something amazing happened. Through it lay the garden, untended and wild, yet undeniably beautiful. Overgrown with wildflowers and tall grasses, it had a purely natural beauty that seemed to be full of life. The sight sparked an immediate reaction from my kids. They dashed into the garden, with infectious laughter echoing through the air.
Just then, my wife came up, tapping my shoulder. “Nature always finds a way to start over, doesn't it?” she said with a smile that warmed
my heart. Her words, filled with wisdom and optimism, echoed around us, mixed with the chorus of rustling(沙沙声) of leaves and birdsong.

George took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking at the basketball court. The gym was old and small, but it held a long history. “Maybe today I'll make history,” George thought.
His basketball league was celebrating. Today's championship game marked its 50th anniversary since the league's first championship.
George looked over the brochure for the anniversary. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped suddenly when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. He quickly went through the rest of the list. “Look!” he said to his teammate David, showing him the brochure. “You see who has the all-time record My dad! He never told me that.”
“24 points,” David said. “That's awesome!”
George's best record was 19 points. He was the Badgers' top scorer.
“It seems that my dad never showed off something like that,” George said.
When his parents arrived, George brought the brochure over to them. His dad laughed. “I didn't miss a shot in that game. But look at the score. I would have traded every shot for a win,” he said with regret. George hadn't noticed that his dad's team had lost the game just by one point. “That was a great group of teammates,” his dad added. “You have great teammates in the Badgers, too.”
As George warmed up, he was still digesting his father's words. “This will be a struggle every second,” the coach emphasized before they got on court to play. “I want to see tough defense, sharp passing, and, above all, smart play as a team.”
George was confident he could lead the Badgers to victory, just as he did in their previous games against the Lions. And he played really hard. As the game neared its end, George had already scored 23 points. Another basket would break his father's scoring record.

This Friday brought a mix of emotions—both excitement and disappointment—all because of a flyer from school. When I got home, Mom saw the flyer in my hand and asked, “What's this?” “A flyer for a five-day art camp,” I explained. “But Emily can't go.”
“Would you like to attend?” Mom asked. “You've always loved art.”
Her words reminded me of what Emily had said earlier, “Tessa, you're the real artist. My brother thought the roses I painted were rocket ships.” I sighed. Mom patted my back. She knew I had a hard time jumping into something with no familiar faces around. “Maybe next year,” she said.
“Maybe,” I echoed. Then I told Mom I wanted to go outside to draw the Westons' pine tree( 松树 ). She nodded with an encouraging smile.
As I walked into the bright sunshine, I couldn't help but think about
the art camp. I wished I felt a little bit braver. Emily could make friends with a whole bus of kids in ten minutes, but my stomach felt like a little boat tossed in a heavy storm when I was surrounded by strangers... By the time I started drawing, I had made up my mind to forget about the art camp.
I began by drawing the pine tree's strong and straight trunk, and then added the beautiful branches, making sure the upper ones lifted gently toward the sun. Lost in my work, I jumped when I heard Mr.Weston
speak up, “You've done a great job showing the strength of that tree on paper.”
“Thanks,” I smiled, glancing up.
As I drew the needles to the branches,Mr.Weston told me something I never knew about pines: If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree will die. Their roots grow out, not down—to get enough water and grow tall.
“You have a good eye, Tessa.” With these words, Mr. Weston nodded goodbye.

But as the days went by, I found myself opening up, making
friends with other campers who shared my love for art, and
together, we explored new techniques and styles. I even tried
sculpting and created a small figure that I was proud of. The
camp ended too soon, but I left with a newfound confidence
in myself and new friendships. As I looked back on the pine

As I reflected on Mr.

something valuable from stepping beyond my comfort zone, just
like the tree's need to spread its roots to grow tall.
Surprisingly, even in the absence of my best friend, the idea

Matthew kept staring at the clock on the classroom wall, and the slowly moving second hand seemed to mock his anxiety. He was eager for the physics class to end so that he could make it on time to his painting hobby group. When the bell finally rang,Matthew bolted out of the classroom like a wild horse freed from its reins, grabbing his backpack. As he rounded the corner of the hallway,he accidentally collided with a
classmate, scattering his canvas and paints all over the floor. The jumbled paint boxes burst open, mixing the colors into a bizarre patch work.He quickly apologized, picking up everything while starting to run again, leaving a trail of colorful footprints on the floor.
After the painting hobby group session ended,Matthew hurriedly joined the other members of the school band. They had an important performance that day.As expected,Matthew was late again, his body covered in dried colorful paints andsweating profusely. He briskly went backstage, changed into the band's uniform, but the paint stains were still faintly visible.Unfortunately,Matthew had not prepared his sheet
music(乐 谱),so he appeared distracted during the performance, often hitting wrong chords and unable to keep up with the rhythm, disappointing the team.Eventually, after a long day at school,Matthew returned home exhausted.
In his bedroom,Matthew sat at his desk, heaving a heavy sigh as he looked at the desk strewn with study books and sheet music. He needed to prepare for the upcoming exams, but he could hardly keep his eyes open. The next thing he remembered was his mother waking him up.He had fallen asleep with his head buried in the desk.As he sat up,his mother gently removed a sheet of music stuck to his cheek. She looked at her son lovingly, smoothing his messy hair.
"So,"she began,"how was school today?"
Matthew nervously looked at her,taking a deep breath."Honestly,not too good,”he admitted sheepishly."I couldn't focus in class,I bumped into a classmate,and I let the band down.It couldn't get any worse,right?"
"Well."Matthew's mother said gently yet seriously,"I think you're taking on too much.”
That night, before going to bed,Matthew realized that things couldn't go on like this.

The next day,Matthew set about making changes to his busy schedule._He knew he had to prioritize his activities to better manage his time.First,he decided to cut back on the number of days he attended the painting hobby group.limiting it to twice a week instead of daily. He also talked to his band leader about the possibility of scheduling extra practice sessions only on weekends. This would give him more time during weekdays to focus on his studies and prepare for exams,Additionally,Matthew began to wake up an hour earlier each day to review his schoolwork in the quiet morning hours, hoping this would help him stay on top of his academic responsibilities.
After Matthew put his new schedule into practice, things began to improve._With a more manageable routine,he found it easier to concentrate in class and keep up with his schoolwork. The reduced frequency of his painting sessions allowed him to enjoy the hobby without feeling rushed, and his artwork even showed signs of improvement due to the extra care and attention he could now afford to give.At band practice, his performance steadily got better as he was no longer distracted or exhausted,The balance he struck between his
commitments left him with a sense of accomplishment rather than stress.Matthew's newfound organization skills gave him the confidence to tackle each day with renewed energy and enthusiasm, proving that sometimes, less truly is more.

I stared at myself in the mirror: blue tights, yellow vest, a fish tail trailing behind me, and large eyes sitting atop my head. I raised my eyebrows and sighed.
“Mom, I don't think this costume is right,” I said. “Maybe the make-up will add something,” Mom replied hopefully.
Somehow Mom had convinced me to play the Fish Footman in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I can't say it's been the time of my life.
“What if I forget my lines?” I hesitated.
“Oh, Riley, is that what you're afraid of I know you've been rehearsing for two months, you were the first off-book in your scene, and I couldn't be prouder of you,” Mom said, kneeling down and hugging me.
The next day we pulled into the parking lot, and I stepped out of the car,
wearing the questionable costume. I shrank inside myself, but Mom pulled me toward the make-up room. When the make-up was done, I looked at myself in the mirror. My jaw dropped.
“Mom! I can't go onstage like this!” I cried.
“Why not?”
“I'd be a laughing stock(笑柄)!”
“Riley, look around you! You're not the only one in an odd costume.”
“What if we just sneak out No one will miss me,” I whispered.
Mom's lips disappeared into a thin line, and I knew I had gone too far. “Riley, I'm going to watch you go out on that stage tonight. And that's the end of it.” Then Mom disappeared into the audience. I sat there, alone and bored, as the play began and the curtain rose on.
The two boys dressed as the Two of Clubs(梅花2) near me chatted casually about this and that. Suddenly, they asked, “You're awfully quiet. Is this your first show?” I tried to respond, but my voice caught in my throat and refused to escape. I coughed and nearly yelled, “YES!”
The Ace of Diamonds(方块A) sitting nearby laughed. “The audience will certainly hear you if you talk that loud. But you might have to clear your throat first,” she chuckled. I gave them a weak smile.
“Don't worry about us,” the Ace said. “We're only teasing.”
“Yeah,” the Two said. “When you've done as many shows as we have, projecting will be second nature to you.”

easy confidence. They, too, had started somewhere, likely just

It took a day's drive, but distance was beside the point. I always enjoyed long journeys in my father's car with my family. However, things went different that time. We were moving to a new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down, for my father had a new job there. My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my
father. She looked excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new school life. Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and meeting new classmates and teachers, which I was not good at.
On my first day at the new school, I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks. I missed my old friends terribly and wished I could go back to my old school. Feeling lonely, I often spent time alone during breaks and after
classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room. I missed the good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging.
As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was shy and found it difficult to strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn't shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I only had words with my deskmate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse when I
knocked off Alex's water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I found we were avoiding each other.

that working with Alex would be very difficult because of our
previous relationship. But to my surprise, as the work
progressed, we found that we shared many common interests.
We put a lot of efforts into the drawings and texts, and
finally we completed a quite outstanding poster. Alex seemed to
forgive me. He appreciated my efforts and began to care
about my feelings. The teacher highly praised our work and

I smiled
shyly but happily as my classmates applauded me and gave

comfortable in my new school. I made new friends, including
Alex, and began to participate in activities in and after class.
By the end of the school year, I had fully adapted to the

I'm retired and not responsible for much these days. I don't have school-age children who require help with their homework. I sleep in when I choose, do a little writing and repair a few things around the house. My wife's work, on the other hand, is never-ending. Diana takes care of her parents in their mid-nineties, tends to the home and garden, volunteers
for various community organizations, and is a gold-star grandmother. She is also a dedicated cat lover, and cats have always been her pet of choice.
All that changed when two small black-and-brown dogs scampered into our yard and melted Diana's heart. It happened not long ago. The dogs appeared unannounced and had been seen by hikers on numerous occasions, roaming the woods like tiny lost souls. They were homeless dogs, as wild as the wind. No one could get within 100 yards of them. In
their struggle for survival, the two had figured out a way to avoid people and find food and shelter in the wilderness.
They were undeniably cute and appealing. Many of our neighbors tried to lure them in with treats, but the tiny dogs remained unapproachable. My wife began leaving tasty food out, slowly moving the food bowl closer with each feeding. As days passed, they ventured closer and closer.
Diana made a conscious effort not to frighten them. She called them to dinner with a comforting voice, letting them know they were safe. It was
important that they trusted her. For Diana, love is the medicine to everything, and nothing tugged at her heartstrings more than a hungry and homeless animal.
Diana named them “Emma” and “Daisy” and she called the dogs her “little wolves”. Initially, they would not let her touch them. As days turned into weeks, their bond slowly grew. Soon, Diana was petting them. Next, they were eating from her hand. Before long, she had them sitting in her lap and following her around the yard. And my wife was instantly transformed from cat lady to dog lady.

whole-heartedly and then return to the house expecting a

Their love and devotion were unquestioning. They quickly

Maybe an unavoidable tragedy brought the little wolves to us,
or maybe they had been adopted by a misguided human.
