A new study has shown how sharks became important predators (捕食者) of the ocean—it looks like global warming played a big part.
Today, we think of sharks as some of the biggest, fastest and deadliest creatures we could meet in the ocean. However, ancient sharks were smaller and lived in the depths of the ocean. In fact, most members of the shark family still live around the seabed. At some stage though, some of these bottom dwellers (底栖动物) developed into the predators we know so well today, such as the great white shark.
Researchers studied the bodies and fins of over 500 shark species, both alive today and those from fossils (ancient animal remains) . This allowed them to see how sharks changed slowly over a long time. The researchers think that some sharks moved up from the seabed after volcanic eruptions (火山爆发) around 93 million years ago which caused the planet, including the oceans, to get warmer.
When water warmed up, it couldn’t hold as much oxygen (氧气) . Some species of shark headed to the surface of the ocean to help themselves breathe. Even though it was warmer higher up, there was still more oxygen there because of contact with the air. Life was also more action-packed, with bigger and faster-moving animals to eat.
The researchers think these changes led to sharks developing bigger pectoral fins over time. Longer fins help sharks swim better to compete with other predators. Phillip Sternes, who led the study, said these kinds of fins are long and narrow like aeroplane wings. They help sharks reduce the amount of energy they need to move. The researchers also think these sharks could swim faster than the bottom dwellers they left behind because sharks’ muscles are sensitive to temperature and perform better in warmer water.
34.What did the researchers mainly find by studying the bodies and fins of shark species
A.How sharks change. B.Which sharks remain.
C.Where sharks live. D.Where sharks move up.
35.What does the underlined word “action-packed” mean in Paragraph 4
A.Full of dangers. B.Full of surprises.
C.Full of changes. D.Full of activities.
36.Why do the researchers compare sharks’ pectoral fins to airplane wings
A.To show how big the sharks’ pectoral fins are.
B.To explain how these fins help sharks swim.
C.To describe the importance of sharks in the ocean.
D.To introduce the differences between them.
37.What does the writer mainly want to tell us
A.We should protect the important predators in the ocean.
B.Sharks are the biggest and fastest creatures in the ocean.
C.Global warming has a big influence on sharks’ living habits.
D.Researchers did a lot to protect shark species against predators.

People often set plenty of alarms to wake themselves up to avoid oversleeping. But according to Brandon Peters, a doctor from Virginia Mason Franciscan Health in Seattle, US, this practice can be harmful to one’s health as it reduces sleep quality.
According to Medical News Today, good sleep happens in cycles (循环). There are four stages in each cycle. In stage one, we enter a light sleep. Our body relaxes and our heart rate slows down. As we fall deeper into sleep, stage two starts. Our eyes stop moving and our body temperature drops. Then comes stage three, which is the deepest sleep and the most difficult for people to awaken from. The last stage is known as rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep). During this stage, our eyes move rapidly from side to side. At the same time, our breathing becomes faster and our heart rate increases.
REM sleep is so important because most of our dreams happen during this stage. This enables our brain to deal with emotions (情绪). REM sleep also helps the brain to turn the new knowledge learned during the day into memories. When we get enough REM sleep, it is easier to center on studying the next day, as stated by the National Sleep Foundation of the US. Since REM sleep mainly takes place in the final hours of a night’s sleep, it is not a good idea to interrupt (打扰) it with a series of alarms going off one after another.
“My general advice is that you set one alarm,” said Alicia Roth at the Cleveland Clinic in the US. She also suggested that people try alarms that use light instead of sound to wake up.
38.Which stage is the deepest sleep according to the text
A.Stage one. B.Stage two. C.Stage three. D.Stage four.
39.Why is the REM sleep so important in a sleep cycle
A.It allows eyes to move faster. B.It enables students to have no emotion.
C.It makes people dream more. D.It helps people remember knowledge better.
40.What can we learn from Alicia Roth’s advice
A.It’s enough to set one alarm. B.It’s a good idea to set a series of alarms.
C.It’s necessary to set alarms louder. D.The more sleep you get, the better you feel.
41.What’s the main purpose of the text
A.To discuss whether to get up early or late. B.To show the importance of sleep.
C.To explain the reasons not to set many alarms. D.To introduce a new study of alarms.

Imagine there’s a thing that can make both our bodies and minds healthy. And it’s always free for everyone. It’s called laughter.
Good for your body
Laughter does several good things to your body. Firstly, laughing is good for our blood pressure and helps lower the risk of a heart problem. Secondly, it makes your body feel less stressed—a person’s muscles (肌肉) can be more relaxed for as long as 45 minutes after a good laugh. What’s more, laughing burns calories (卡路里), too—not many, but they, every little helps to keep you healthier!
Good for your mind
Having a good sense of humour helps to keep a good state of mind, too. When your friend tells you something funny and it makes you laugh or simply smile, you relax a bit. And it helps us deal with difficult feelings like sadness, worry or anger. What laughter does is to allow us to get a better opinion on our problems, and then we can deal with them better. It’s no surprise that many people find that laughter therapy (欢笑疗法) helps with their problems.
Good for your relationships
You may have seen comedy shows with fake (虚假的) laughter. Some people don’t like it. Why do they add this fake laughter Because they know laughter is contagious. If you hear others laugh, you might laugh too. Laughter truly brings people closer. It often comes not only from shows or funny stories, but from being with those you love and having fun. It is said that sharing laughter improves our relationships, like with families and partners.
So, all you have to do is to laugh! Find things to laugh about, be with the people who make you laugh, and laugh for no reason at all as often as you can. Laughter surely is one of the best medicines.

①Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why Some people think kindness is something out of love and care, while others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate (激活) an area of the brain called Striatum. Research also shows that kindness improves people’s mood (情绪). But why and how does it happen Here are a number of different ways.
②Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around may be smiling, too. This is specially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good. So why not set off that chain (链条) of good feelings to people around
③Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others. Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. Similarly, charities (慈善) also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the world.
④In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone’s spirits. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you’re getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.
⑤All in all, being kind may improve your mood, but research has also shown that if you’re in a good mood, you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn’t it

【原文】Hello, everyone. I’m Daniel, the leader of the basketball fan club. The final match of this year is going to be in our school at four o’clock this Saturday afternoon. If you are free then, come and watch it on the school playground. Our school team is going to play against Land School Team. As you know, Land School Team won the final last year. Green School Team won the second prize, and we were the third. Our team lost it because Jack, the main person of the team, hurt his leg. And other teammates lost their confidence without him. What was worse, we didn’t have time to train enough last year. But this year, we trained harder than ever before and made great progress. Of course, Jack will take part in the final match. And we have already won two matches since last week. Here comes the last match. Our coach, Mr. Smith, says that we have a good chance of winning the final match this e and cheer for our great basketball team! Thank you.
