Have you ever felt sick or had a headache while riding in a car That's carsickness, a common problem. It happens because your brain is in a tricky situation: you' re sitting still, but your inner ear sends movement signals(信号) to the brain.
When carsickness hits, what do you usually do Some people take medicine, while others try sitting at the front of the car to look ahead or keep the window open for fresh air. Those methods can work, but Chinese scientists have found a new, easier solution — listening to music! They studied how to help people feel better from carsickness and discovered that different kinds of music have different effects(影响) on
reducing(减轻) it.
The study results were quite interesting. Joyful music worked the best, reducing carsickness by 57.3%. Soft music was almost as good, cutting down carsickness by 56.7%. Passionate(激昂的) music helped a little, with a 48.3% reduction. However, sad music didn't help at all. In fact, it was even worse than doing nothing. The control group just had a rest to reduce carsickness. They reported a reduction in carsickness of 43.3% after their rest, while those who listened to sad music reported a reduction of just 40%.
Researchers think that soft music helps you relax, while joyful music keeps your mind busy and helps you feel good. But sad music could have the opposite effect. It might make you feel worse by arousing negative(负面的) feelings.
