Alex set his lunch tray on the table near his friend Leo. “Trade you some fries for some pretzels,” Alex said.
“Deal,” said Leo, taking his bag of pretzels out of bis lunchbox.
Alex noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Leo’s lunchbox.
“What’s that ” asked Daniel, another boy in their class.
Before Leo could answer, Daniel grabbed the paper. He unfolded it and read in a loud voice: “Dear Leo, I hope you have a great day. Love. Mom.”
Daniel snorted. “Your mom puts notes in your lunchbox ”
“Yes,” Leo said.
Daniel read the note again, to himself. It almost looked as if he wanted to keep it.
“Give it back to Leo,” said Alex.
“Well, who wants a note anyway ” Daniel said.
“I do,” said Leo.
Alex liked getting notes too.
Daniel tossed the note and it fell to the floor.
Alex picked it up. He handed it back to Leo, who put it into his pocket.
On the bus that afternoon, Alex thought about what had happened.
Alex’s older brother, Mateo, arrived home just after Alex did. “How was your day, little dude ” Mateo asked.
“A boy in my class was mean to Leo,” Alex said. He explained the way Daniel had acted.
Mateo shook his head. “How would Daniel like it if people picked on him for getting a note ”
“Daniel never gets notes,” Alex said. Suddenly, he had an idea. “That’s it! I know how to help Leo and Daniel.”
Alex explained his idea to Mateo. Mateo agreed to help, and they worked on the plan all afternoon.
At lunchtime the next day, Alex hurried to the cafeteria. He set out 23 folded pieces of paper on a table by the entrance. Each piece of paper had the name of a classmate on it.
“What are these ” asked Mira.
“We all have notes,” said Sabrina.
Alex watched as Daniel picked up the note with his name on it. Alex knew that the note said Daniel, ▲ Have a great day.

If you see a girl and a boy throwing two baby puffins (海鹦) off a cliff (悬崖) on the Westman Islands, you may not understand why they’re doing so. In fact, they are just trying to help save them.
Puffins are the most common birds on the Westman Islands in Iceland. Different from most sea birds, they are able to go under water to 60 meters deep to catch fish. Each spring, they lay eggs in holes on cliffs. 40 days later, they will fly back to the sea, leaving the young there. Baby puffins would spend about six weeks in the holes alone before they are ready to fly to the sea.
In the past, young puffins could easily find the sea with the help of the moonlight. But now, bright lights of the city often make them lose their way. Many of them end up flying into the town. However, it’s not an easy thing for young puffins to fly up and find food in the town, so they may lose their lives there.
That’s why people on the Westman Islands have decided to help those young puffins. In late summer, when young puffins leave their holes, local people often go out to look for the missing puffins at night. If they find one, they would pick it up and put it in a box. The next day, they would take it to the cliff and throw it off. In this way, young puffins can fly safely to their new home for the next few years.
The unusual tradition also helps make sure the puffins will be back to their holes another year.
A puffin lays one egg each year at most, so the help from the people on the Westman Islands is of great importance to the survival (生存) of puffins.

A new and exciting invention now allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using augmented reality (AR) glasses and a smartphone, deaf and hearing-impaired people are also able to join in everyday conversations.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he had dinner with his family. The man saw his hearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. This reminded him of his grandfather who was always watching TV shows with subtitles (字幕). Because of this experience, he realized that he should do something to help.
Scarfe got to work with an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out.
The glasses first receive the audio (音频) and send it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that audio. With the help of software, these subtitles appear on the user’s glasses screen.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground because over 12 million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it could change the lives of some 430 million people. This is about 5% of the world’s population and includes 70 million people with total hearing loss.
This is a game changer for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, says, “As a deaf person, I am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so amazed. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.”
32.Who is the new invention helpful for
A. Workers with writing problems. B. Teenagers with reading problems.
C. People with hearing problems. D. Grandparents with speech problems.

Everyone lives in social groups from the day we are born. Sometimes some small things may lead to misunderstandings. Then the relationship between each other may get worse and worse. There are some people’s views about what to do with the relationship between people.
In society, understanding other people can help us understand situations from different
perspectives(角度).So learning some basic skills can help us better understand each other.
Several reasons like feelings, tiredness and illness influence us to understand others. This means that if a person is happy, he'’ll be more willing to help and understand others; if one
feels angry, he is less likely to want to search for ways to improve relations.
One of the best ways to understand how others feel is listening. If people are talking, listen carefully. This will make him or her feel good. They are more likely to share the problems with you. But sometimes we only stick to our personal ideas. We think everything we say is totally correct. Whatever others say, we just refuse to listen. So both sides won't accept each other.
When having different ideas, we should think about the situation we’re facing. Even a small act can make us have a better under- standing of each other.

Asking for Help
There might be some problems or worries in life. When we encounter problems or troubles that we cannot solve ourselves, we should learn to actively seek help from others. It’s important to ask for help, and it will help you relax.
Last year, my English grammar was weak. Because of this problem, my English was not good. So I went to ask my English teacher for help. With the help of my teacher and my own efforts, my English score has gradually improved. Now I’ve really learned how to learn lessons myself.
In a word, it is normal to have problems. When we meet problems, we can ask people around us for help, such as teachers, classmates or parents. In addition, we can also search the Internet for solutions.
