Michael and his wife had just moved into a new San Francisco apartment when they met their neighbor,
77-year-old Hindu priest Jeff Dunan. Dunan told them about Bangladesh Relief, an organization he volunteers for
that provides food, clothing and essential supplies to poor people in northern Bangladesh. Michael decided to
donate $150 to Dunan’s GoFundMe campaign.
Shortly after donating, he received a credit card company notification warning of an unusually large
transaction (交易) — a $15,041 charge from GoFundMe. Seeing the five-figure amount, he was bewildered. The
mystery quickly cleared up: his credit card number starts with 4 and 1, and he had accidentally typed the first two
numbers of his card while his cursor (光标) was still in the donation box.
Michael contacted GoFundMe support and explained the mistake, relieved to learn he would get a refund (退
款) within 3-7 business days. However, the $15,000 donation — more than doubling the campaign’s total at the
time — would remain on the page during processing. Before he could call Dunan to explain, he received
Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity’s Bangladesh-based program manager, thanking him for the
generous gift, along with photos of poor Bangladeshis holding thank-you signs with his name.
Moved and guilty about canceling the large donation, Michael decided to give $1,500 after getting his refund.
When Dunan mentioned the organization’s desperate need for funds, he shared his typo (打字错误) story on social
media to inspire others.
To his surprise, the story went viral. In just a few weeks, it raised over $120,000 for Bangladesh Relief —
eight times Michael’s accidental donation — with more than 3,700 people contributing. “Never in my wildest
dreams did I imagine this reaction,” Michael said. “People can be amazing when they come together for something
like this.”

A. Kind and responsible. B. Careless and selfish.
C. Rich and intelligent. D. Shy and impatient.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage

I could count on one hand the number of times I ordered takeout or delivery before my daily routine changed
dramatically. Food critics (美食家) tend to eat away from home a lot — in my case, ten or so meals a week.
What a difference that change has made. Since adjusting my daily rhythm several months ago, I’ve ordered
more takeout than ever before. Want to see my trash bin
This summer I saved packaging from around 30 orders for three weeks. The pile of paper, plastic, aluminum
(铝) and glass shocked me — it filled two recycling containers, leaving me overcome with guilt.
My friends, my problem is our problem. National Geographic last year revealed a troubling fact: the U.S. uses
over 36 billion disposable utensils (一次性餐具) yearly, enough to go around Earth 139 times. Market research
company NPD Group reports a 127 percent increase in digital orders compared to the same time last year.
These takeout containers and utensils are now an inescapable personal responsibility. “Disposable products are
convenient but inefficient,” says Matt Prindiville, CEO of Upstream, a nonprofit aiming to end single-use culture.
“Disposable utensils bring you convenience and are inexpensive, but they cost whales and sea lions dear,” he says,
referring to plastic and other materials that have hurt ocean life.
Nearly 80% of all plastic ever made ends up in landfills, littered across landscapes or floating in seas, as
Bloomberg reported — most plastic doesn’t biodegrade (生物降解).
The solution Abandon disposable utensils and use your own when ordering takeout. Some restaurants are
leading the way: Rose’s at Home in Washington replaced cardboard boxes with reusable nylon bags, urging
customers to reuse or recycle. Jaleo serves paella in metal pans, offering $10 off next orders for returns.
Restaurants focusing on eco-friendly packaging deserve our support. It’s time we all took action to reduce
takeout waste.
8. What do the numbers in Paragraph 4 indicate
A. Global takeout orders are rising fast. B. NPD Group has accurate research data.
C. Americans prefer takeout to home cooking. D. Disposable utensils are overused in the U.S.
9. What can we learn about disposable utensils according to Matt Prindiville
A. They can be easily biodegraded. B. They are more efficient than reusable ones.
C. They are cheap and environmentally friendly. D. They harm ocean creatures despite convenience.
10. How does the author present the solution
A. By giving examples. B. By quoting explanations.
C. By making a comparison. D. By showing a research result.
11. What’s the writing purpose of this passage
A. To share personal takeout experiences. B. To explain the harm of plastic products.
C. To call on people to reduce takeout waste. D. To criticize restaurants’ packaging choices.

Astronomers have examined the stars that a new space telescope might target, to prepare for one of the most
advanced searches for life on other planets. Early on, they discovered which star systems might be more suitable to
hunt for potential life.
In the 2040s, NASA plans to launch the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), which will be the first
telescope designed specifically to search for signs of life on planets orbiting other stars. To achieve this aim, the
HWO will take pictures of about 25 Earth-like planets in the habitable zones of sun-like stars — where water and
even life could exist. Before building the HWO, scientists have been working on significant challenges it will face.
One of those is choosing stars within around 100 light years from Earth that the telescope might target. Caleb
Harada at the University of California, Berkeley, and his team analyzed 164 potential stars to evaluate their relevant
characteristics accurately. These stars could become some of the most studied stars ever.
Harada and his team discovered that 102 of the stars are binaries (双子星), which could make the search for
life more complex. The HWO telescope will use a tool to block (挡住) the stars’ light to attempt to image planets in
orbit and study the gases in their atmospheres. “If binaries are too close together, the light from the unblocked star
will be so bright that it’ll cover up the planets and make them hard to see, making planet detection (探测) around
binary stars more difficult,” explains Bruce Macintosh from the University of California Observatories.
Out of all the stars, 33 have dust rings that could make it hard to see planets clearly. “This makes exploring
harder,” says Harada. “Some stars sometimes burst into bright flames, like our sun’s flares (太阳耀斑), which aren’
t always deadly. Nevertheless, we need to check closely that they’re not too strong, because these can affect life
and the living conditions where life formation can happen.”
12. Why is the HWO designed
A. To examine sun-like stars. B. To take pictures of planets.
C. To recognize planets orbiting stars. D. To look for life signs on some planets.
13. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Challenges. B. Scientists. C. Planets. D. Signs.
14. What makes planet detection around binary stars hard
A. The tool used by HWO telescope. B. The huge number of binary stars.
C. The brightness of unblocked stars. D. The gases in planets’ atmospheres.
15. What factor might prevent the formation of life according to the last paragraph
A. Space exploration. B. Stars’ strong bursts.
C Frequent solar flares. D. Dust rings on planets.

Diane Ray was completely self-centered and very spoilt (宠坏的). Her parents gave her everything that she
wanted, knowing that she would throw a tantrum (发脾气) if they did not satisfy her desire.
That was why she was alone on the beach, wearing an expensive swimsuit, which was got by another big
tantrum. Her parents were back at the beach house, recovering from the tantrum she had thrown, after they had told
her that it was too dangerous to go swimming alone. “Dangerous ” she said. “You just don’t want me to have fun. I’
m going and if you try to stop me, I’ll scream.”
“What are you doing ” a voice asked. Diane jumped and looked around. She did not know that the man was
here until he spoke.
“I’m going to swim,” she answered coldly.
“You shouldn’t swim today,” the man advised. “There is a storm coming up.”
“You should mind your own business” Diane replied and walked into the gentle waves.
“If you go out there you’ll be sorry,” the man called after her. But she did not want to reply.
Diane slipped (滑) into the water and swam happily until white waves began rolling in and it became harder to
swim against the current (水流). Sea water kept hitting her face, making it more and more difficult to breathe.
Frightened, she began to cry. Hot tears mixed with the cold sea on her cheeks, not the loud sobs she used to
get her way, but quiet whimpers that got lost in the roar of the waves. She thought of her parents’ worried faces and
their warnings. Unknowingly, a sharp, terrible regret twisted in her stomach. And she felt she would slip beneath
the surface and be pulled under the current.
Then, she heard a calm voice, “Hold on! I’m coming.” With relief, she saw the man rowing a boat towards her.
“I hope you’ve learned a lesson. You put us both in danger,” he shouted angrily as he dragged her into the boat.
Diane thanked him gratefully and ran towards the beach house.
After Diane closed her bedroom’s door, she was lost in thought.

“People can be amazing when they come together for something
like this.”

Good morning, everyone!
Today I’d like to talk about online friendship. While the internet helps us connect with people worldwide,
some of us get too lost in it. Spending too much time on online friends can make us neglect real-life relationships,
and we might even face risks like meeting dishonest people.
So here are my suggestions. First, set a time limit for online chatting to focus more on classmates and family.
Second, turn to real friends when you feel down — face-to-face comfort is more warm and genuine.
Let’s balance online and offline life to grow healthily. Thank you!
第二节(满分 20 分)
