Grandpa Owl always said, “The forest used to be calm.” But I, a young sparrow (麻雀), live in Shan State, Myanmar, and have only known storms and floods.
Last year, humans cut down many trees near the river. They built big machines that made loud noises day and night. As a result, we couldn’t sleep at all. “Trees hold the soil,” Grandpa warned, but no one listened. Then came the heavy rain. Without trees, the soil was washed away, turning the river into a wild, brown torrent (激流). It also flooded our nests —we barely (勉强) made it to safety.
This month, strong winds blew down our tree. Grandpa said, “Winds never used to be this fierce. Humans take too much from the forest,” he sighed, “so nature fights back.”
We now live in a small, bare patch (小块土地). Most animals miss the old forest, where rain gently watered flowers and winds sang softly through the leaves. Maybe if humans stop taking too much, nature can find its balance again. But for now, we birds stay alert (警觉的) and worried. Could anybody help us

China has been working hard to reduce sandstorms in recent years. 56 This not only makes the land greener but also helps prevent dust storms.
Sandstorms used to be a big problem. They brought strong winds with lots of sand, making it hard to breathe and see. 57 But things are getting better because of the green plants.
When trees and grass grow in deserts, their roots (根) hold the soil together. 58 The plants also slow down the wind, so it can’t carry as much sand. As a result, the number of sandstorms has been reducing over time.
59 They choose plants that can live in dry conditions, like certain trees and bushes. These plants not only fight sand but also create a better living environment for animals.
60 It shows that people can work with nature to improve the environment for everyone.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳答案,使文章意思通顺、内容完整,并将选项填入下列横线上。
A. The government and local people work together on these projects. B. This stops the sand from being blown away by the wind. C. One important way is by planting more green plants in deserts. D. Schools sometimes had to close, and people had to stay indoors. E. Planting green plants in deserts takes time and effort, but it really works.

One of the most famous earthquakes in history happened in Tangshan, China, in 1976. It was a terrible disaster that no one expected.
On the night of July 28th, while people were sleeping, the ground suddenly began to shake hard. Then, buildings fell and roads broke. It was too quick and too harmful. More than 242,000 people lost their lives and 164,000 were badly hurt in that earthquake.
People from all over China lent a helping hand. Soldiers worked day and night to save people. Doctors and nurses also came to help. And later everyone took part in rebuilding the city.
The earthquake was 7.8 on the Richter scale. It taught us how important it is to build strong houses to prepare for disasters. Today, Tangshan is beautiful, but people will never forget that night and everyone’s courage.

参考范文
Attention, please! Heavy storms hit our areas quite often. To keep safe on the way to and from school, here are some tips.
First, wear a raincoat instead of an umbrella because it’s safer in strong winds. Also, put on your non-slip shoes to avoid falling. Second, stay away from deep water. You can’t know how deep it is, and there may be holes. Most importantly, if the river water covers the road, never walk through it. Third, be more careful on the road. Drivers can’t see very well, so walk slowly and cross only when the traffic light turns green. If you get into trouble, ask an adult for help or call your teacher or parents right away.
