Every year during the Spring Festival, Shanghai’s Yu Garden hosts a well-known lantern show. It has been recognized as one of China’s important intangible cultural heritages (非物质文化遗产) and is also among the oldest lantern fairs in the country, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. People can enjoy the colorful lights, send New Year wishes to their families and friends, and experience traditional Chinese culture.
In 2024, this lantern festival did something special — this popular lantern show made its first appearance outside China! For the first time, the event was held at Jardind’ Acclimatation, France’s oldest amusement park (游乐场). There, people could see 60 large and bright lighting patterns and over 2,000 beautiful lanterns. They made the park look like a wonderland. This show joined the cultures of the East and the West together to celebrate the 2024 Year of the Dragon in a special way.
The lanterns there mixed Eastern and Western art. Some showed powerful dragons from Chinese stories, while others showed creatures from Shanhai Jing, an ancient Chinese storybook. For example, visitors could see mythical animals like Kunpeng (a giant fish-bird) and Yinglong (a rain dragon), symbols of courage and hope. These lanterns brought people into a magical world and let them know more about the great Chinese culture.
Besides looking at the lanterns, visitors could also enjoy some amazing traditional Chinese performances like fan dances and kung fu shows. They could also taste delicious Chinese food such as dumplings and tangyuan. Many French visitors tried on hanfu clothing and bought paper cuttings as souvenirs (纪念品).
“This wasn’t just a lantern show — it was a cultural dialogue,” said the organizer Li Wei. The event helped people understand each other’s traditions better. Though the lights are gone now, the warm memories and valuable friendships continue to shine.

My junior high school didn’t have a football team, and I never tried out to play for any of the town teams. After I graduated from junior high school, some of my friends asked, “Are you going to try out for the senior high school team ” I hadn’t really thought about it. High school students from around the world recently proved that robotics isn’t just about building machines — it’s about solving real - world problems.
The 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition in Shanghai (FRC), held at East China Normal University in March, brought together nearly 1,000 high school students from 43 teams coming from different countries and regions, including China, the United States, and Australia.
This year’s theme, “Reefscape” (拯救珊瑚), challenged students to design robots to rebuild ocean ecosystems. The challenges tested students’ both technical skills and environmental care.
Among the competitors, two Shanghai teams stood out. Team 6941 “Iron - Pulse” from Shanghai Pinghe School won first place, while Team 6940 “Violet Z” from a local high school took third. Both teams will compete in the world championship in Houston, USA.
As the world’s highest - level youth robotics competition, FRC requires strong teamwork, Mei Kai, the 17 - year - old captain of Iron - Pulse, explained. “Everyone has a role to play — whether it’s the driver, coach, technician or programmer — and success comes from working together,” he said.
Song Jinyang, coach of Violet Z, believes that this level of close cooperation among students helps to improve their ability to solve complex problems. “when a robot part fails, students must figure out the problems step by step, this teaches them teamwork,” she added.
The competition also encouraged global friendship. Violet Z once shared their coding tips with teams from other countries. “Real progress isn’t about beating others — it’s learning together,” said Iron - Pulse’s coach Jin Shifei. “If your competitor is missing a part and you happen to have it, would you lend it to them Of course, the answer is yes — that’s the true success of education,” he added.

Everyone is shaped by the people and environment around them, but none so much as the family. For better or worse, our parents and other relatives have a great influence on our lives. 41 As we grow older, we may distance ourselves from them, but their influence remains.
One of the most obvious ways the family shapes us is through genetics (遗传). We get our physical characteristics from our parents, like hair color and eye color. 42 We also get tendencies (偏好) and talents, such as a musical talent. Even though we can’t choose our genes, we can learn to accept the things that make us unique.
Another way the family shapes us is through its experiences. From an early age, we learn the habits, beliefs (信仰), and values of our family members, 43 We may not share all the same views as our parents or grandparents, but their influence is still there. In many ways, this influence is even stronger than genes when it comes to who we become as people.
44 The way our parents treat us and each other has a huge influence on how we see the world and how we treat the people around us. If we grow up in a family full of love and respect, we are more willing to show love and respect to others.
There’s no certain answer to the question of nature or nurture (培养). 45 But many other factors also play a role.
A.But genetics goes beyond appearance.
B.Finally, the family shapes us by example.
C.Our family plays an important role in how we develop as human beings.

Now AI technology has found its way into our daily life. There is a heated discussion on whether middle school students should be allowed to use AI in their studies.
I believe that middle school students should be allowed to use AI when learning because it can provide valuable information. For example, AI can offer help on homework in time. Moreover, it can reorganize information clearly, helping students understand complex topics. It can also make learning fun.
However, we must learn to use AI wisely and avoid simply copying answers. Only by thinking independently can we truly improve our knowledge and skills. Therefore, with the right attitude, AI can become a powerful tool to develop our study habits.
