The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is one of the greatest works in American culture. The book is so interesting that even today, it is quite popular among kids. Although I am in my thirties, the book remains one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I came away with an important lesson from the main character Tom Sawyer.
In our daily lives, we often have to do some boring or tiring tasks. How do you feel when your mom tells you to clean the floor Do you often want to complain (抱怨) I think most people do. Tom Sawyer, however, thought differently when he was given a boring task. One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence (篱笆) of the yard. When Tom’s friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past, Tom instead of complaining, told him that he felt excited about the job.
“Only one in a thousand—maybe even two thousand—boys can do this!” Tom said to his friend.
His words made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance to paint the fence.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson that complaining is useless. The next time you are given a boring or tiring task, stop complaining. Of course, as we see in Tom Sawyer’s story, someone else won’t always come along to do the work for us. However, without complaining, you’ll feel better and perhaps even do a better job!

Encouraging Learning is an important essay (短文) by Xunzi, a great thinker from ancient China. Written over 2,000 years ago, it still holds valuable lessons for students today, as it discusses the importance of learning and how hard work can change a person.
Xunzi believed that no one is born perfect, but anyone can become wise and capable (有才干的) through learning. He used simple examples to illustrate his point: just as a piece of wood can be shaped into a useful tool with effort, a person can improve with learning. He argued that learning is not something you do for a short period of time, but a lifelong journey—like flowing water that never stops, continuous learning makes you stronger and wiser.
The essay also cautions against being lazy or proud. Xunzi said that even smart people will fall behind others if they stop learning, while those who keep trying, even if they start slowly, will eventually (最终) succeed. He emphasized (强调) that learning from others and following good examples are as important as reading books, because they help you avoid mistakes and stay on the right path.
Today, Encouraging Learning still inspires (激励) students. It tells us that success comes from daily effort. Whether you want to improve your grades or grow as a person, this essay reminds you: keep learning, keep trying, and you will become the best version (版本) of yourself.
