One hot day, Mike arrived at Tom’s tea house after a long day of selling fruits. He was thirsty and tired, so Tom led him to a cool bench. Mike rested there, enjoying his tea and a moment of peace.
Nearby, Ali, hungry and with only a dry piece of bread in his hand, passed the tea house and was drawn in by the smell of soup. He stood near the kettle, breathing in the rich smell of food. His stomach started to make noise as he named the ingredient he could smell. He then placed his dry bread above the kettle, letting the warm steam (蒸汽) soak (浸入) into it, making the bread taste much better.
Tom saw him and angrily said that he had to pay for the steam that made his bread taste better. Ali refused, as he had no money. The two argued, each speaking louder, until they asked Mike for help. Mike, wise and calm, listened to both men and asked Tom, “_____________” Tom said the price was the same as a full bowl of soup. Mike then said he would pay for the steam that made Ali’s bread taste better. He counted out three coins, each worth a full bowl of soup, and let them fall onto the table. As the coins bounced away, Tom went to pick them up, but Mike grabbed them quickly, put them back in his bag, and said, “I’ve already paid for the steam”
Then Mike smiled and explained, “Steam and sound are like brothers. They are both things you cannot see or touch, but they still affect what is around them. The steam rises from the kettle and makes the bread taste better, just as the sound of the coins falling fills the air and ‘pays’ for the steam.”

Scientists are working to improve finding cancer by mixing the strong sense of smell in dogs with computer help (AI). This mix has helped to make the results better and could lead to better treatment for patients.
Each year, over 1.7 million new cancer cases (案例) are found in the U.S. Doctors say early finding is important because it improves the chances of getting better. Researchers are trying to make testing for cancer easier, faster, and more convenient.
Dogs have an amazing sense of smell, which is much better than humans’. They have already been trained to find diseases like diabetes (糖尿病) and cancer. For this study, scientists trained six Labrador dogs for six months to find four types of cancer. The dogs were asked to sit down if they smelled cancer or move on if they don’t.
To improve the system, the team created an AI model called LUCID to read the dogs’ body language and actions as they smell. Together, the dog-AI team correctly found 245 out of 261 cancer cases, with a 94% success rate.
Scientists now are working on developing the at-home test. They hope it will allow patients only to breathe into a special mask that collects a sample (样本) and then send it to be tested by the dogs and AI. Researchers will continue testing the technology using trained dogs.
23.What is the main purpose of the research with dogs and AI
A.To help find out what causes the cancer.
B.To take the place of doctors with AI technology.
C.To create a new type of dog for testing cancer.
D.To find cancer easily, quickly and conveniently.
24.How can dogs help in the cancer finding process
A.Dogs can use their strong sense of smell to find cancer.
B.Dogs can collect samples and send them to doctors.
C.Dogs can tell the part of human body that is getting ill.
D.Dogs can make a lot of noise when they smell cancer.
25.Why does the writer use the numbers in Paragraph 4
A.To show the high number of cancer cases found.
B.To stress the success rate of the dog-AI system.
C.To explain the number of dogs used in the study.
D.To introduce how many people benefiting from it.
26.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A.The dogs’ sense of smell. B.The AI system.
C.The at-home tests. D.The sample.

①Have you noticed how quiet restaurants have become Instead of lively conversations, most people sit staring at their phones. A recent study found that 70% of teenagers prefer texting to face-to-face talks. But are we really connecting, or just exchanging emojis
②First, let’s consider what we’re losing. Real conversations teach us important skills like reading expressions on faces and tones of voice. These “soft skills” help us make friends and succeed at work. When we only communicate through phones, we miss these learning chances. Experts call this “social malnutrition”—when our communication diet lacks real human connection.
③Moreover, online communication is like last food, quick and satisfying but not very nutritious (有营养的). A text can never take the place of the warmth of a hug or the light in someone’s eyes when they laugh. Our phones give us thousands of connections, but how many real friends do we have When did “friends” become just names on a screen
④Additionally, we’re forgetting how to focus on the moment. At dinner, instead of talking, everyone just looks at their phones. We’re losing the ability to truly listen to each other. But imagine being outside in nature—no phone noises, just the wind in the trees and real conversations.
⑤In short, technology won’t disappear, but we must control it instead of letting it control us. Next time you’re with friends, try putting phones away. You might rediscover the joy of real connection. After all, humans have lived for thousands of years before smartphones were invented—surely we can manage a meal without them!
27.What do the underlined words “social malnutrition” mean in paragraph 2
A.Making friends while working. B.Sending too many emojis online.
C.Missing real communication skills. D.Using phones while eating with friends.
28.Why does the author compare online communication to fast food
A.Because it’s becoming more popular. B.Because it’s cheap and easy to get.
C.Because it’s bad for people’s health. D.Because it’s quick but not meaningful.
29.What does the author suggest for better communication
A.Have phone-free meals. B.Use more emojis in texts.
C.Send messages more carefully. D.Spend more time on social media.
30.What’s the structure of the passage
A.①②/③/④⑤ B.①/②③④/⑤ C.①/②③/④⑤ D.①②/③④/⑤
