ASK US ANYTHINGTB EDITORS MADI & ERIN LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU
Hi Madi & Erin, I had the subscription (订阅) last year as well as this year, and I really love reading them. All of your magazines are so helpful and make me smile. Sometimes at school when people say their test results, or sport times, or are in higher levels, it makes me feel like I’m not good at anything and am not good enough. Thanks for reading, Ella
Hi Ella! Thank you for reaching out about how you’re feeling around school and sporting results. Let us first say that comparing is very normal, and often we do it so quickly and easily that we don’t stop to think about the wider conditions. It’s important to remember two things: There’s nothing wrong with realizing that someone is stronger at a subject or sport than you are. Rather than losing heart, a better result might be feeling like you want to develop your own skills, study more, or take inspiration from this person or even ask for their advice! YOU are your own unbelievable person, with your own great personalities and skills—some of which you may have not even discovered yet! You don’t need to be like anyone else, or do things like anyone else, either. One of the best ways to compare is not to look at all the things we don’t have, but to look at all the things we do—and the same goes for our achievements, too. No matter what, please know that you are good enough, always! With kindness, the TB team
16.How does Ella probably feel about her situation
A.Angry. B.Moved. C.Nervous. D.Bored.
17.What does the TB team tell Ella to do
A.Be patient with her friends. B.Give up comparing.
C.Find what she doesn’t have. D.Ask others for advice.
18.From which part of a magazine may this text be taken
A.Sports News B.Teens’ Life C.Historical Events D.Learning Methods

If you think running a marathon (马拉松) is difficult enough, you’d be amazed at the brave runners who complete the North Pole Marathon. Wearing warm clothes, they have to deal with heavy snow and temperatures of -30℃ to complete the 49-kilometre race. Although marathons take place all over the world, this special marathon is the only one that’s completely on “water”. For clear reasons, it can only be held during winter. That is the only time when the whole course (赛道) becomes ice, giving the hopeful runners the best chance of finishing the race.
Since the event started in 2003, 480 people from around the world have successfully completed the race. Stefanie Pettersson from Brazil is one of the youngest people to achieve this. She was just 16 years and two weeks old on the day of the race. Her dad was also one of the competitors. An experienced runner, Anders Pettersson encouraged Stefanie not to give up when she felt too cold or exhausted to continue. Another competitor who ran with Stefanie and Anders was Ted Jackson from the UK. He took up running when his father and brother developed health problems. He was scared the same thing might happen to him. To avoid that situation, he decided to get really fit.
Many of those who run the North Pole Marathon are trying to raise money for different charities (慈善机构). They collect money from friends and family by advertising what they plan to do. This could be on the internet. They are grateful for everything they receive because the cost of running the marathon is 16,000. This does, however, include all flights, hotels and medical support.
19.What is special about the North Pole Marathon
A.It is held on the ice. B.It is shorter than normal.
C.It is easy to finish. D.It is completed in summer.
20.What does the underlined word “exhausted” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Disappointed. B.Worried. C.Rather bored. D.Very tired.
21.Why did Ted Jackson start running
A.To show an interest. B.To keep healthy again.
C.To have an experience. D.To prevent health problems.
22.How do many runners raise money
A.By selling to their friends. B.By working for the charities.
C.By advertising on the internet. D.By offering medical support.

I was not surprised to hear that someone made fun of my look at my friend’s birthday party. I laughed along, silently agreeing that I was not so good-looking. It was so embarrassing.
Over the next months, I became increasingly self-critical (自我批判), at first only of my looks and then of almost everything else. As I kept focusing on my looks, I became unable to put myself into my schoolwork.
When a family friend got plastic surgery (整形手术), I told my parents that I wanted to do it too. A nose job seemed like the answer to everything. To my surprise, my parents agreed and even thought of the surgery as a way to treat my snoring (打鼾).
Finally, the day arrived. I went to the hospital with my mother. In her mind, the surgery was small—she saw it as something quick and easy. But to me, it was more like a life-changing event.
Though I felt fine for the first few hours after I returned home, finally a burning pain was in my head. When I finally got the bandage removed, I cried the whole way home. I felt worse. Over the weeks, I began to feel foolish. I couldn’t believe that I’d gone through all this just because some classmates had laughed at me.
It wasn’t until I actually had the surgery that I realized that having a prettier nose wouldn’t make me feel any better about myself. Now I realize that my self-worth is in many more valuable things: my sense of humor and the power of my mind. You might think all you need is a nose job to be beautiful, but what I want to tell you is that you don’t need others to think you’re beautiful to be worth something.
23.Why did the writer consider having surgery on her nose
A.To stay in style. B.To make parents pleased.
C.To fit in with her friends. D.To solve her snoring problem.
24.How did the writer’s parents react when she mentioned plastic surgery
A.They are strongly against it.
B.They reached an agreement with the writer.
C.They suggested she focus on her studies instead.
D.They worried it might cause more health problems.
25.How did the writer feel after having the nose job
A.Worried but hopeful. B.Fine and confident.
C.Surprised but doubtful. D.Upset and regretful.
26.What is the writer trying to tell us through her story
A.Appearance plays a role in shaping our self-worth.
B.One should know their strong points and weak ones.
C.Self-worth comes from inside rather than appearance.
D.Others’ opinions about one’s appearance are important.
D
“Mom, I want a cat, ” or “Mom, I want a dog,” or “Mom, I want a...,” are common words that parents may hear from their children more than once. However, there are many arguments for and against children owning pets.
The first argument that supports pet ownership by children is that they are good company. When children come home from school, pets are always there to greet them. They love children and always love to play. As a result, children won’t be lonely. They will also help to keep children active as they will need to be walked and played with every day.
▲ Pets need to be taken care of every day. Children will learn different skills that they can use later in life. For example, washing and feeding pets are important skills to learn. Learning these responsibilities will be good for their future life. Caring for pets also shows them how to be kind and patient.
On the other hand, some pets can be dangerous. Some dogs, for example, may hurt others, and children may become afraid of animals as a result of this happening to them. Cats also look very soft, but they do have very sharp claws. If they are treated in the wrong way, cats can use their claws to scratch.
Besides, pets require a great deal of care. Many pets need showers, exercise and so on. As a result of this, children may neglect their studies because they are too busy worrying about their pet and its health.
A further argument against pet ownership is that pets are costly; buying food and caring them is expensive. Finally, the cost of owning one falls on parents, and as a result, children don’t fully understand the responsibility of having one.
In short, there are many arguments for and against pet ownership. Pets help to keep children company, fit, and they also help them to learn new responsibilities. However, pets can be dangerous, they require a lot of care, and they cost a lot of money to be taken care of properly.
27.Which of the following sentences can be put into ▲ in paragraph 3
A.Second, pets can make children more active.
B.So, children will have more friends at school.
C.All in all, pets bring children much happiness.
D.Also, looking after pets helps children learn responsibilities.
28.What does the underlined word “neglect” in paragraph 5 mean
A.put an effort in B.pay little attention to
C.have no influence on D.show great interest in
29.Which of the followings are the reasons against children owning pets according to the passage
① Children may get sick easily.
② Some pets may hurt the children.
③ Keeping a pet costs a lot of money.
④ Owning pets may influence kids’ schoolwork.
A.①②③ B.①③④ C.②③④ D.①②④
30.What would be the best title for the passage
A.The Joy of Owning Pets B.How to Take Care of Pets

Studies show that children who eat breakfast do better in school. 31 Whether you work at home or at the office, it is not a good idea to have no breakfast.
If we have no breakfast, we are likely to become tired when our brains and bodies run low on fuel (能量). By mid-morning, a lot of us hold a cup of coffee or eat a candy to wake up again. 32 But by lunch time we are hungry. Eating a good breakfast sets the base for the rest of the day.
Having no breakfast is a popular way to lose weight, but not a smart one. Many people believe that they will lose weight if they have no meals, but that just isn’t true; the body expects to be filled with fuel a few times a day, starting with a healthy breakfast. 33
34 It should have some protein (蛋白质) and some fiber (纤维). Protein can come from low fat meats, eggs, or beans. Fiber can be found in whole vegetables and fruits. A good example of a healthy breakfast might be something simple like a hard boiled egg, an orange, and a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk.
A.What is a healthy breakfast made up
B.It is for sure that adults will feel better and do better at work as well.
C. This might work for a few minutes.
D.In fact, people who eat breakfast are more likely to keep a healthy weight.
