30 March is the 31st National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students (NDESEMSS全国中小学生安全教育日) in 2026. The theme of the day is to give students more knowledge about safety and make sure that they are safe.
A survey done by the China Youth & Children Research Centre showed that school accidents kill more elementary and middle school students than accidents that happen in other places. The accidents at school mainly come from stampedes (踩踏), earthquakes, fires and sports injuries.
What can we do to keep ourselves safe Staying calm is the first and the most important rule when facing accidents. But different accidents have different self-protection ways.
A stampede may happen everywhere. The larger a human crowd gets, the more likely stampedes happen. When students around you begin to push, stand still, try to hold on to something and stay in a corner until the crowd disperses (散去). If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands.
Earthquakes are common natural disasters. When you feel the ground shake and drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoors, don’t stay near buildings, trees or power lines.
When there’s a fire, follow the teachers’ instructions, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you won’t breathe in smoke.

Look at the stove area. Are paper towels or curtains too close to it They can catch fire easily. Always remember to turn off the stove completely after cooking.

Finally, take a walk through other rooms. Check if electrical cords (线) are in good condition and not under carpets (地毯). Make sure your flashlight has working batteries in case the power goes out at night.

Safety Rules for Middle School Students
Hello, everyone. I’m Li Hua, a safety speaker from our school. Today I’d like to talk about how to stay safe in our daily life.
At school, walk on the right when going upstairs and downstairs. Don’t run or chase each other during breaks. Do warm-up exercises before PE class. At home, use electricity safely. Don’t open the door for strangers when alone. Stay away from knives and fire in the kitchen. When going out, follow traffic rules. Wear a helmet when riding a bike. Never go to strange places with strangers. Safety is no small matter. Let’s start from small things to protect ourselves.
Thank you.
