Vanuatu, a country made up of islands in the Pacific Ocean, took action against pollution in 2018, banning certain kinds of single-use plastic. A new report shows that the change has worked and that plastic pollution has fallen by a lot.
In 2018, Vanuatu introduced a ban on single-use plastic bags, plastic straws and takeaway boxes made from polystyrene. In 2019, they added plastic flowers and single-use cutlery and plates to the list.The banned items used to make up 35% of Vanuatu’s waste but now make up less than 2%.
Before the ban, lots of plastic rubbish that had gathered in the sea used to fill some of Vanuatu’s lagoons(濒海湖). ▲ But the situation is improving and there is now much less plastic in beautiful places like Erakor Island.
In shops, most customers carry reusable bags and at outdoor events, food is often served wrapped in banana leaves. New business opportunities are springing up too, thanks to the need to replace banned items. One example is a business called Mamma’s Laef, which makes reusable shopping bags. Its owner,Jack Kalsrap, said, “We’re a small island state, so we know that pollution can really overwhelm us more than in other bigger countries.”
Not all single-use plastic is banned. For example, fish is still wrapped in plastic, and people still use plastic bottles. The government plans to ban more things like disposable nappies and make it easier to recycle plastic bottles.

时文阅读 2023 年度国家最高科学技术奖获得者
Li Deren was born in Jiangsu Province on December 31, 1939. He went to primary school at the age of six. And in 1957, he went to Wuhan University of Surveying and Mapping. He and another scientist won 2023 yearly National Highest Science and Technology Award.
Li Deren is in his eighties now. He spends all his life in making China’s surveying and remote sensing abilities better. He developed the technologies for worldwide high-precision positioning and mapping by using satellite remote sensing. He worked out many problems in high-precision processing of remote sensing satellite images.
In the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Li and his team used the newest technology and took the clearest pictures of earthquake areas to help do rescue work. In 2020, Li used remote sensing technologies to help build hospitals Huoshenshan and Leishenshan.
During the rainy weather in 2023, Li’s team used the satellite developed by his team to take pictures of the flooded places in Hebei Province in North China. They clearly found an opening in a dam(堤坝).The clear pictures helped save over 6,400 people from danger.
