Host: As we know, the British have been sending cards since the 19th century. They spend about 1,700,000,000 pounds on cards every year. However, the number of people sending cards and letters is falling. More than 30 percent of the UK children have never sent or received a handwritten letter. Should the tradition of sending cards and letters be stopped
Group A:We live in a fast-developing world and using snail mail is unnecessary. Making paper uses lots of energy and some cards are hard to recycle. It’s bad for the environment. What’s more, cards are expensive to buy and so is the posting. Nowadays, we usually use our phones and computers because they are quick, easy and free. Traditional cards and letters are out of date. They are not young people’s cup of tea. It’s no surprise that most of them end up as litter. Group B:The tradition has been around for hundreds of years and should stay. Sending a handwritten letter or carefully choosing a card shows that you care. Phone messages and emails are quick and easy, but they seem to carry fewer feelings. Sending letters is good for children because it is a chance to practice writing skills. Also, it’s fun! Receiving post makes you feel special and it’s important if someone lives far away or is lonely—just imagine a birthday without cards!

This year, about one hundred teenagers from all over China will spend one year in American homes. They will attend schools and meet teenagers in the U.S., and have a new understanding of America. At the same time, about one hundred American teenagers will come to China to learn Chinese and get a new understanding of China.
A 15-year-old exchange student, Fred, spent last year in China with Li Hua’s family. In turn, Li Hua spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred knew little Chinese when he arrived, but after two months’ study, the language began to come to him. The school was completely different from what he had expected—much harder. Students stood up respectfully(尊敬) when the teacher entered the classroom. They took fourteen subjects instead of six in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.
Family life was different, too. The father’s words were laws, and all activities were around the whole family rather than individuals.

At the same time, in America, Li Hua, a friendly Chinese boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize (批评) American schools,” he said. “It is much too easy for us. In our daily lives, we talk with many people. Being polite is not just a good habit;it’s a key to making communication smoother (顺利的) and more pleasant. English has special ways to show respect, especially when we ask for help or permission (许可).
When we ask someone to do something, how we ask makes a big difference. Instead of a direct command (命令) like “Sweep the floor”, a polite request (请求) is better. Using “Could you please... ” works well. For example, “Could you please help me with this heavy box ” is a good request. “Could” sounds softer than “can”, which shows more respect.Adding “please” makes it even friendlier.
When we want permission, the words we choose are also important. “Can I... ” is common among friends, but “Could I... ” is politer, especially among adults (成年人) like teachers. Asking a friend “Can I borrow your book ” is fine. But asking a teacher “Could I ask a question ” shows respect for their position (职位).
Politeness is also two-way. When you cannot help someone, just saying “No” can sound rude (粗鲁的).It’s better to give a short reason. For example, you could say “I’m sorry, but I have to finish my homework first.” This shows you respect their request, even if you can’t agree.
Using these polite phrases is an easy way to build better relationships. Small words can make the home and school a happier place for everyone.
( )12. Which is the politest way to ask for help according to the text
A. Tell me the way. B. Can you help me
C. Where is the library D. Could you please help me
( )13. What does “Politeness is also two-way.” mean in the text
A. Both people should be polite.
B. There are two ways to be polite.
C. You should say polite words twice.
D. You should only be polite to adults.
( )14. How does the writer mainly explain his points (观点)
A. By telling stories. B. By using numbers.
C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons (对比).
( )15. What is the best title for this text
A. Can or Could B. Giving Good Reasons
C. How to Make Friends D. The Importance of Being Polite

Now, calling someone is an art, too. First, give a call to your friends, and then begin the talk by asking them about their life and family. Then ask them about their schedules on the day of the party. If they say they are free, you can ask them to the party directly (直接地). If they are not free, you can ask them to try to find time for your party.
If you’re going to have a big party, and need to ask lots of people to your party, you must decide how many people you want at your party.
