Lin Buran, a 40-year-old man from Canada, has lived in China for over 10 years. He loves Chinese classical literature and has created over 4,200 paintings based on the book A Dream of Red Mansions and many Chinese poems over the years.
To many people, Lin seems a little unusual. He lives in a 9-square-meter room in Nanchang, paying 350 yuan in rent (租金) each month. Although he lives in such a small house, Lin isn’t sad because he feels that he carries a big world in his heart.
Some of Lin’s habits also seem kind of odd. For example, he doesn’t use a smartphone or WeChat. His favorite way to travel is walking. His friend Zhang Ke says, “He is lively and thoughtful, even though he seems a little different from others.”
Lin enjoys his simple life in Nanchang and has found the meaning in it. “I can do what I like. I’m very happy now,” he says. Lin’s life serves as a good example of the old saying, “Though my dwelling (住所) is humble (简陋的), it is my virtues (品德) that bring it fame.”
