The TV drama Born to be Alive has touched millions of hearts. Starring Yang Zi and Hu Ge, the drama takes us to a beautiful but wild world. However, the show is just a window. Outside the window is the real Sanjiangyuan. It is not only where the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers begin, but also the home of brave people.
Hoh Xil (可可西里) , a part of Sanjiangyuan area, is on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原) . It’s over 4600 meters high with thin air, and the wind cuts like a knife. Many years ago, the beautiful land faced a dark time. Thousands of Tibetan antelopes (羚羊) were hunted for their wool (羊毛) . The land, once peaceful, was covered with blood. The antelopes, the pride of the plateau, almost disappeared from the earth.
To stop the killing, a group of heroes stood up. They are the real-life models for the characters in the drama. One of them was Jetsun Sonam Dargye. In the 1990s, with old tools and little food, he and his team fought against cruel hunters in the cold wild. In a final battle, he was shot but refused to fall. He froze into a statue (雕像) in the snow, still holding his gun to protect the land. His death woke up the whole nation. In 1997, Hoh Xil became a national nature reserve (保护区) .
So far, the population of Tibetan antelopes in Hoh Xil has risen from less than 20000 to over 70,000. The protectors used their lives to teach us a lesson: The “Tree of Life” doesn’t only grow in the soil; it grows from the courage to protect nature and the wisdom to live with it together. Protecting nature is actually protecting ourselves.

C.To show how beautiful nature is. D.To ask people to watch the drama.
12.What really caused the “dark time” in Hoh Xil
A.The cold weather on the high plateau. B.The dangerous wolves in the wild.
C.The cruel hunting for wool. D.Little food and old tools.
13.What happened to Sonam Daegye in the final fight
A.He ran away to save himself. B.He caught all the hunters.
C.He was shot and froze to death. D.He gave up and went home.
14.How did Sonam Dargye help the antelopes
A.He built the national nature reserve. B.He provided enough food for them.
C.He caught all the hunters himself. D.His death led to better protection.

A.The Beautiful Land of Hoh Xil B.Real Heroes Protecting Home and Nature
C.The TV Drama “Born to Be Alive” D.The Danger of Hunting on the Plateau

“My longing to go to Qinghai has reached its peak.” “Only after watching Born to Be Alive did I learn that this land is the birthplace of three great rivers, and the true home of the Tibetan antelope (藏羚羊).”
Since the hit TV series Born to Be Alive began airing, countless viewers have shared their thoughts online. Many say it feels like watching a documentary, as the series is shot against the beautiful landscapes of Qinghai and is based on real stories.
Where to Find Sanjiangyuan
If you have ever been to Qinghai, you may get the sense of water falling from the sky. This is no exaggeration. In the south of Qinghai Province lies Sanjiangyuan, the meeting place of waters that give birth to the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Lancang River, which is known to the world as the Mekong (湄公河).
Each year, Sanjiangyuan sends nearly sixty billion cubic metres of clean fresh water to eighteen provinces in China and five other countries. It is the lifeline of hundreds of millions of people. For much of China, it is a major water source and is rightly called the “”Water Tower of the Nation”. As the saying goes, “When Sanjiangyuan sneezes, the Yangtze and the Yellow River catch a cold.”
But this land is rich not only in water. Rising at an average height of 3,500 to 4,800 metres, Sanjiangyuan rests in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原), the Roof of the World. It is the highest place on Earth where life gathers in such rich variety.
Here, nature preserves some of its most precious forms of life. Yet this area was once threatened by poaching (盗猎). The Tibetan antelope suffered the most, with numbers falling sharply from around 200,000 to fewer than 20,000. Born to Be Alive sheds light on the efforts made to protect these animals.
An Effort Across Generations
Born to Be Alive tells the story of Bai Ju, a young policewoman who joins a mountain patrol team (巡山队). Together with Deputy County Head (副县长) Duojie, she fights against illegal poaching and mining (采矿) and works tirelessly to build a nature reserve (保护区).
The real-life inspiration for Duojie, one of the story's central figures, is drawn from Jiesang Sonandajie and Qika Zhabaduojie. They were pioneers of ecological protection in Kekexili. The former lost his life in the line of duty.
In 1997, the first nature protection station in Kekexili was completed and put into use. To honour Jiesang Sonandajie, the station was named after him. At the Kunlun Mountain Pass, his statue still stands.
Thanks to generations of protection efforts, there are now around 70,000 Tibetan antelopes.
What Is the “Life Tree” Then
The answer is simple now. The “Life Tree” is Sanjiangyuan. This winding network of waters is like a tree of life. Seen from the air, the rivers spread out like branches and roots, forming a great trunk that holds the land together. Yet its meaning goes far beyond its shape.
The patrol members are not only protecting Tibetan antelopes; they are guarding the entire plateau and the vast lands downstream (在下游).
After watching the series, many viewers go on to search for the real stories behind Qinghai’s ecological protection. The province, once overlooked, is now receiving greater attention.
As one viewer commented, “Qinghai has brewed its richest love into silence. And when that silence grows deep enough, you can hear it. That’s the heartbeat of the earth.”

Everyone knows that forests help fight climate change. However, a recent scientific report shows that the world lost 300,000 square kilometers of forests in 2024. That’s an area about the size of Italy.
According to the report, for the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. ▲ . This country has the largest area of rainforest in the world. Last year, it suffered from a long period of dry weather. Wildfires broke out and spread. As a result, about 25,000 square kilometers of the primary rainforest disappeared in the country. This meant fires caused 66% of its forest loss.
The second biggest cause of the world’s forest loss was clearing land for farming. As people need more farmland, they keep cutting down forests every year. In 2024, the area of forest cleared for farming increased by 14% worldwide. The situation was more severe in developing countries. For example, Bolivia’s forest loss doubled in 2024.
Without doubt, something must be done. Experts call on governments, businesses and people to work together before it is too late. It seems that China has set a good example. Thanks to cooperation at many levels, China had the biggest increase in forest area among all countries in 2024. That year alone, newly-planted trees in China covered an area of nearly 45,000 square kilometers, according to a news report. If more countries start to take action like China, the earth will become a greener planet.

The Green City, the Healthy Life
Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious. In order to have a healthy life, as a citizen, it’s our duty to help build a green city.
We can go out on foot or by bike to cut down air pollution. We should throw rubbish into bins and keep our city clean. It’s also good to plant more trees and flowers.
We should save water and electricity. Remember to turn off lights when we leave rooms. We’d better use cloth bags instead of plastic ones.
If everyone tries his best, our city will be greener and our life will be healthier.
