If volunteering begins at an early age,it can become part of a child’s life—something he or she may just expect and want to do.It can teach them:
A sense of responsibility1.By volunteering,children learn how to be on time for a job,do their best,and be proud of the results.And they also learn that,in the end,they are responsible for the well-being2 of their whole community.
The knowledge that one person can make a difference.A wonderful message for a child is that he or she is important enough to have an effect on someone or something else.
The benefit of sacrifice3.By giving up a toy to a less fortunate child,a child learns that it is good to sacrifice sometimes.Cutting back on playing time to help clean up a street tells kids that there are important things other than ourselves and our needs.
Tolerance.Working in community service can bring kids and teens in touch with people of different backgrounds,abilities,ages,and education.They will likely find that even the most diverse4 people can be united by common values.
Job munity service can help young people decide on their future careers.Learning to work as a team member,taking on leadership roles,setting project goals—these are all skills that can be learned by volunteering and will serve a child well in the future career.
How to fill free time wisely.If a child is not interested in traditional after-school activities,community service can be a wonderful choice.
