Have you ever tried to hide your emotions from someone during a conversation? 1 Scientists from the Ohio State University have found that people are able to tell other people's emotions according to the changes in the color of their faces.
Scientists studied pictures of people's facial expressions. 2 For example, happiness makes our faces red around the cheeks and a little blue around the chin. Disgust(厌恶) creates not only a blue yellow color around the lips, but also a red green color around the nose and forehead.
“We believe these color patterns are the result of small changes in blood flow triggered(触发) by the central nervous system,” a researcher Alex Martinez said.
3 Does the color alone or also the facial expressions help people tell others' emotions?
To figure this out, scientists added color patterns to pictures of faces that showed no facial expressions. 4 They were able to tell the emotions seventy five percent of the time without any difficulty.

Passage 2
When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and a poor man got it.
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum(羊皮纸) on which was written the secret of the “Touchstone”. The touchstone was a small pebble(鹅卵石) that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this:The real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles are cold.
So the man sold his house, bought a tent, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up normal pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold,he might pick up the same pebbles hundreds of times. So,when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold—throw it into the sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days stretched(延伸) into months and the months into years.
One day, however, about midafternoon,he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up. So when the one he wanted came along,he still threw it away.

Passage 4(素材源自Wonderful WORLD Book 3)
地热能的发现
Many scientists are interested in the heat that comes from deep in the Earth. People can use this underground heat to make a type of energy called geothermal energy(地热能). We need energy to light our homes,to cook and so on. We already get clean energy from the sun and the wind. But scientists think that geothermal energy will give even more people clean energy in the future.
In the Amazon of Peru, there is a very unusual heat source(来源). It's called the Boiling River. For years, people told stories about a river that boiled. The river killed anything that fell into it.
A young scientist,Andres Ruzo, travelled into the Amazon and found the river. Its water is very hot. A cup of very hot coffee is about 60℃. Andres found the temperature of this river can be up to 99℃. That's really hot! Most animals that fall into the river lose their lives easily. It's very dangerous. But scientists study the river to better understand geothermal energy. They don't get energy from the river. It's protected. Scientists and local people also work to protect other parts of the Amazon. They don't want people to cut down trees and destroy the rain forest, just to make money. The Amazon is too important for the people who live there, and also for people who want to better understand our world.

Passage 10
人工智能的利与弊
Artificial intelligence(AI) is set to benefit mankind in many ways. It will make everyday tasks easier and bring efficiency to many industries. It might be one of man's greatest inventions.
And yet, like any other technology,AI will also bring risks. In February 2018,a group of AI experts got together to discuss the possible disadvantages of AI. What they found was “Every AI developed by the good guys is also helpful for the bad guys.” according to Quartz.

Passage 11(素材源自21st CENTURY READING Book 1)
穿着的重要性
Deciding what to wear is a challenge for some people. We often worry about what others will think of us because of our clothes. But researchers are beginning to think that our clothing has a powerful effect on how we see ourselves.
Scientists Adam Galinsky and Hajo Adams report that there is science behind our style. In the research, Galinsky and Adams had some participants who wore white coats similar to the ones scientists or doctors wear. Other participants wore their normal clothes. They took a test that surveyed their ability to pay attention. In the experiment, participants saw cards with different words on them. They had to say the color of the word they saw, not the word itself. The people wearing the white coats said the correct color of the word more often. They think that the white coats made the participants feel more confident and careful. The researchers also believe that other kinds of clothes can influence the behavior of the people wearing them.
Fashion blogger(博主)Jessica Quirk believes that our clothes greatly affect how we feel about ourselves. On her blog called “What I Wore”,Quirk posts a photo of what she's wearing every day. She says that people should pay more attention to what they wear. For example,we should choose a look that makes us feel more creative and happier. One way to do this at work is to “dress up for the exciting job we want”. Another is to wear special clothes that mean something to us. For example,Quirk wears one pair of shoes to all her important meetings. They are her “lucky” shoes.

反式脂肪
There may be something in your food that you can't see and smell. But it could be killing you. It's called trans fat(反式脂肪).
Trans fat is usually taken from the hydrogenated(氢化) vegetable oil. Food makers use this low priced oil to make food stay fresh longer. It can be found in food such as cakes, fried food and so on. Studies have found that trans fat increases the risk of heart disease.
“Some countries have been stopping trans fat from being used, such as Denmark and a few states in the US. And it's really important that governments around the world change trans fat for healthier oils,” said Frieden, the head of the Public Health Organization.
The WHO calls on governments to take some steps. These include changing trans fat for healthier oils, letting the public realize trans fat can have bad influence on people's health, and carrying out anti trans fat laws.
