When Anne and Dudley O’Sullivan decided to finally downsize (精减) at the age of 89, they were surprised that the hardest part was saying goodbye to their beloved book collection.
“We had thousands of books we had collected over the years. Getting rid of some was hard.
Choosing what to take was the biggest decision,” says Anne.
With an ageing population, the “downsizing dilemma” is one confronting thousands of
older Australians at the moment — a difficult decision that involves saying goodbye to a family home that contains memories in every room.
For the Sydney couple they weren’t forced to move — there was no urgent health crisis or emergency. But instead of waiting for one, they made the choice to downsize into independent
living before circumstances took the decision away from them. “We knew we didn’t need the
large space we had in our old house. We just decided it was time to move. The house we were in met all our needs at the time, but we are not having big parties or anything anymore so that’s
mainly why we were ready,” says Dudley.
For Anne and Dudley, the decision to move into “The Grove by Elysium”, a new
benchmark (标杆) for senior living which presents a lifestyle that promotes independence and
active living in a safe and secure environment, was an easy one. They could see their new
apartment from the back balcony of their existing house. Even when the decision is clear, the
process of letting go is rarely simple. Their home was filled with items that held sentimental value from Dudley’s mother’s 1927 dining table to furniture passed down from family. “Some of it we passed down to our grandchildren. One of our granddaughters has the old dining table now,” says Anne.
Since moving into Elysium, life has become easier and more enjoyable for them. “Living in a smaller space, it is so easy to keep clean. We don’t have to do any maintenance (维护). If
anything goes wrong, we just call somebody to come and fix it,” Anne says.
4 .What usually troubles people in a “downsizing dilemma”
A .Getting rid of limitations. B .Living away from relatives.
C .Parting with the old items. D .Adapting to a new environment.
5 .Why did Anne and Dudley decide to move
A .To pursue larger living space. B .To escape a severe health crisis.
C .To make it easier to hold parties. D .To live an independent later life.

6 .What does the underlined word “sentimental” mean in paragraph 4
A .Practical. B .Emotional. C .Economical. D .Recreational.
7 .What’s Anne’s tone like in the last paragraph
A .Concerned. B .Curious. C .Satisfied. D .Ambitious.

Inspired by butterfly wings, a team of German researchers have developed a new kind of robotic wings that can work using only magnetic fields (磁场). The new wings created by the Technical University of Darmstadt researchers need no batteries or electronics.
The researchers drew inspiration from the remarkable efficiency and endurance (持久力) of monarch butterflies, known to have incredibly long migrations between Canada and Mexico.
Every autumn, millions of Monarch butterflies start a 3,000-mile journey from their North American breeding grounds to the warmer climate of southwestern Mexico for the winter.
These new robotic wings achieve energy-efficient flight by combining movement with
passive bending, which was rarely copied outside the natural world. The team, led by Professor Oliver Gutfleisch and Dr. Denys Makarov, used a combination of flexible plastic fixed with tiny magnetic particles (颗粒) to build the wings.
The team found that the magnetic particles, when exposed to external magnetic fields,
caused the wings to bend in a manner similar to that of butterflies. Achieving the desired design
proved challenging; however, after testing fewer than 12 different designs, the team could develop wings strikingly similar to those that evolved in butterflies.
Looking ahead, these new wings could have a wide range of applications. One could be
environmental research in which winged robots monitor pollinator populations or measure air
quality. They could also be helpful in disasters, with their small, energy-efficient design enabling robots to navigate dangerous areas for search and rescue operations. The team also pointed out
that the new design could also be readily adapted for medical sciences.
The principle of using magnetic particles in this way could also open doors for developing new kinds of artificial muscles or other innovative materials that can change shape on demand.
While the robotic wings currently rely on external magnetic fields to change shape, the team is optimistic about integrating man-made magnetic field generators into future upgrades ofthe

What is art Cave paintings are often called the first art ever made. However, it’s possible the people who created the paintings thought of them as mysterious and powerful, quite different from art as we think of it today.
In 13th-and 14th-century Europe, people usually thought of artists like workers or
craftspeople because they used their hands to make things. It wasn’t until the 15th and 16th
centuries, known as the Renaissance in Europe, that artists began to see themselves as creators, not just craftsmen. A big change happened in 1436 when a man named Leon Battista Alberti wrote a famous book called On Painting, which claimed that art was just as important as poetry and
science. People started to think more about artists as special individuals.
Art began to be divided into two groups. The first was called the “fine arts”, which included
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
painting, sculpture and drawing. These were seen as more important because they expressed big ideas and emotions. The second group was called the “decorative arts”, like glass-making,
wood-carving and book decorations. These were thought to be less important because they were more about looking nice or being useful.
In the late 19th century, people started to like the decorative arts more, because artists
wanted to focus on handmade things instead of factory-made items. But painting was still seen as an important kind of art. Then, in 1914, a French artist named Marcel Duchamp changed how
people thought about art.
He started using everyday objects and turning them into art just by choosing them and signing them. His most famous art was called Fountain—it was actually a type of toilet that he signed with a fake name, “R. Mutt”, and tried to put in an art show in New York in 1917.
Duchamp said that picking an ordinary object and calling it art was enough to make it art, because the artist made the choice. Duchamp helped change art by showing that it isn’t just about painting or making statues—it’s also about ideas.
12 .What was the significance of On Painting
A .It gave painting a new direction. B .It introduced a new form of poetry.
C .It enhanced the status of artists. D .It made Battista Alberti well-known.
13 .What happened in the late 19th century
A .The value of fine arts declined.
B .The enthusiasm for painting faded.
C .Factory-made items had no market.
D .Decorative arts became fashionable.
14 .Why was Fountain considered an art piece according to Duchamp
A .It was pretty and useful. B .It was a handmade object.
C .It had an artistic appearance. D .It was chosen by the artist.
15 .What is the text centered on
A .The thinking about art. B .The classification of artworks.
C .The impact of masterpieces. D .The source of artist’s inspiration.

Why do we need to do homework
If you’ve ever stared at your homework feeling stuck, you’re not alone. ____16____ Why do teachers keep giving you work to do at home when you’ve already spent hours learning at
school The available research suggests that homework helps you practise what you’ve learned, remember it better and build skills like time management and independence.
However, research shows that how you feel about homework depends on a few things. If
you find your homework boring, it might be because the activity you’ve been given to do really is pretty boring. ____ 17____ A worksheet that doesn’t connect to your lessons is not so helpful. A task that challenges you to think, create, or explore concepts and ideas is much better.
Your attitude toward homework isn’t just about the task. ____ 18____ If you have parents or guardians who encourage you, help you plan your time, or show interest in your work, this can make homework feel more positive.
____ 19____ Not everyone has a quiet space to work, or someone at home who can help.
This is called the “homework gap” and it can make school feel unfair. Some schools are
rethinking homework altogether. They are looking at how they can make homework fair for everyone.
Homework isn’t going away any time soon. ____20____ When it’s well-designed,
supported by teachers and parents, and connected to learning, it can help you grow — not just as a student, but as a thinker.

The bell above the bakery door sounded, marking the end of another long day. Six-year-old Ana watched her mother, Elena, wipe flour-dusted hands on her apron (围裙)—the same faded
blue one she wore every day. Her mother’s dress, a simple grey shift washed thin at the elbows, was as constant as the sunrise.
Tomorrow was Mama’s birthday. A secret, heavy with love, sat in Ana’s chest. Mama
never bought clothes for herself. Her gifts were the warm bread on the table, the quiet mending of Ana’s socks, and the gentle song she hummed while making bread. Ana’s biggest wish was to
wrap her love in something beautiful: a new dress, the color of the sky just after dawn.
But coins were for flour and eggs, not for dreams. As Elena locked the door, an idea started to form and grow in Ana’s mind. She would grow her gift, like the seeds in the window box.
试卷第 12 页,共 13 页
The next morning, Ana became a tiny, determined entrepreneur. She gathered fallen
flowers from the geraniums (天竺葵) by the step, threading them onto strings to make “necklaces”. She drew careful pictures of their bakery, selling them to kindly neighbors for a penny. She even
offered to carefully dust old Mr. Henderson’s collection of tin soldier statues, her small face serious with effort. Her piggy bank began to whisper with a few lonely coins.
Days passed. Her piggy bank grew heavier, but not heavy enough. On the eve of the
birthday, Ana poured the coins onto her blanket. It wasn’t enough for a dress, not even a scarf.
Downstairs, she found her mother at the kitchen table, mending that same grey dress by lamplight. The sight was a quiet ache. “Mama,” Ana whispered, the coins held firmly in her small fist. “I
wanted to buy you a blue dress for tomorrow. But I only have this.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Ana’s voice trembled (颤抖) as she opened her hand.
