As a kind of traditional Chinese dress, Mamianqun(horse face skirt) first appeared in the Song Dynasty and grew popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The two sides of
Mamianqun are pleated(打褶的), and there is a smooth part in the middle, commonly known as“Mamian”.
Why is it called“Mamian” In fact,“Mamian” is a kind of structure(结构) used for protection in the city wall system. However, all the books about Mamianqun only show that the smooth surface without pleats in the middle is called“Mamian”. But there is no further explanation of how Mamianqun got its name.
