A
In 1736, Benjamin Franklin came across a phenomenon while working as a clerk for the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful new member didn’t like Franklin and even threatened to make his life difficult. Franklin could have bowed to him and tried to win him over with kind words, but he did something unexpected.
Knowing the man owned a rare and valuable book, Franklin asked if he could borrow it for a few days. The man agreed, and Franklin returned it days later with a polite note. “When we next met in the House, he spoke to me, (which he had never done before) and did so politely,” Franklin later recalled. “He that has once done you a kindness will be more ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged (恩惠).”
This idea became known as the Ben Franklin Effect. In 1969, two psychologists, Jon Jecker and David Landy, ran an experiment. They asked 74 volunteers to take part in a competition where they could win money. After the competition, the volunteers were divided into three groups. In the first group, the lead researcher (who acted a bit annoying) personally asked each competitor to return the money to help him out. In the second group, the office assistant asked the competitors to return the money, saying the department needed it. The third group got to keep their money. Later, the volunteers were asked how much they liked the researcher. Those in the first group had a much more positive impression of him than did those in the third group. The result of the second group suggested that an indirect request for a favor does not endear you to others.
But why does this happen One explanation is cognitive dissonance — the discomfort we feel when we hold two conflicting thoughts. For example, if you think, “I don’t like Joe, but I’m doing him a favor,” your brain solves the conflict by deciding, “Maybe I do like him after all.” Another explanation comes from the desire to build good relationships. Humans are naturally wired to want to help others.
21.Why did Franklin borrow a book from the member
A.To see its value. B.To improve relationship.
C.To learn how to be polite. D.To test the member’s character.
22.What decided how much the researcher was liked
A.The group number. B.The amount of money.
C.The participants’ personality. D.The direct request for a favor.
23.What is the second explanation about
A.Human nature. B.Network opinions.
C.Social expectation. D.Conflicting situations.

We hear them daily, whether it’s ‘your eyes are bigger than your stomach’ from your mom or ‘words fail me’ for something amazing. These colorful gems (宝石), idioms with meanings that can’t be inferred from individual words, are important to help “spice up” our daily conversations.
Everyone occasionally struggles to find the right words to express themselves. For example, when a person needs a better way to say that something is expensive, he might hesitate, searching through the empty files of their brain for something, and come up empty-handed. He ends up saying that, “The new car costs too much.” This is fine, but perhaps ‘costs an arm and a leg’ would have been more effective.
One of the idioms I distinctly remember is ‘keep your shirt on’. It happened in the second grade during a group project. When I complained about the moody girl’s lack of cooperation, she got angry. I told her to ‘keep her shirt on’, which she misunderstood and reported to our teacher. She was unaware of the idiom’s meaning, which I found unreasonable. This idiom actually originates from the 19th century, when men’s shirts needed to be taken off before arguing or fighting. “Keep the shirts on” could be used to prevent any further tension.
Another two idioms are also worth mentioning. Imagine you have a deadline for a five-page essay that you haven’t ‘gotten the ball rolling’. You might say you’re ‘in a pickle’, an idiom for a difficult situation with no obvious solution. Now, consider that same issue with the essay. You’ve barely started, and it’s evident you won’t meet the deadline. Rather than worrying, you look for a positive aspect, hoping to find a ‘silver lining’ in this mess. The idiom ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ expresses this feeling.
Idioms are crucial for communication in music, literature, or just in everyday conversations. Beyond this, these figures of speech are vital to understand what others mean if they use them. Educating ourselves about idioms will also allow us to add emphasis on subjects we talk about. In addition to my own experiences, it is high time that we learned about idioms.
24.What do we know about idioms from the first two paragraphs
A.Idioms make conversations more demanding.
B.Idioms are challenging to recall from our minds.
C.Idioms are easy to perceive from separate words.
D.Idioms add flavor and efficiency to communication.
25.What does the author’s story imply in Paragraph 3
A.The girl was unreasonable for reporting.
B.Teachers are supposed to know all the idioms.
C.Idioms can cause confusion in a group project.
D.Understanding idioms prevents misunderstandings.
26.If you want to strengthen optimism in a bad situation, which idiom is appropriate
A.‘in a pickle’ B.‘keep your shirt on’
C.‘every cloud has a silver lining’ D.‘your eyes are bigger than your stomach’
27.What does the author focus on in the last paragraph
A.Appealing for actions. B.Offering advice.
C.Pushing literal speech. D.Applying idioms to arts.

The catering industry (餐饮业) is witnessing a significant shift towards digital menus, a tendency that is gaining popularity as more restaurants adopt technology to improve the dining experience. Digital menus, which can be accessed through QR codes, tablets, or other digital interfaces, offer a modern and interactive way for customers to explore and order their meals.
Survey data from Square’s Future of Restaurants 2021 report reveals that an overwhelming 88% of restaurants are considering the switch to digital menus. This transition was motivated by the need for contactless services initially, which have become increasingly important in light of recent health and safety concerns. Digital menus offer advantages such as real-time updates, reduced waste, and the potential for data collection to make business decisions.
Bruce Bell, head of Square for Restaurants, wrote in a report that “The human-interaction element of dining is never going to go away, but I think U.S. restaurants will use QR-code menus in a way that will help them turn more tables and save costs on the expenses of menu and labor.” This statement reflects a common view among restaurant owners who see digital menus as a way to improve operational efficiency.
Despite the growing tendency towards digital menus, some restaurants and customers remain committed to traditional menus. As regular diner Sarah puts it, “I love the feeling of a menu in my hands; it sets the tone for the dining experience. I can take my time and really connect with the server. There’s something about the personal touch that screens simply can’t match.”
The decision to adopt digital menus or stick with traditional ones has implications for customer experience, operational efficiency, and environmental impact. Digital menus offer a number of strengths. However, they also require an initial investment in technology and may not be suitable for all types of restaurants or customers. Traditional menus, on the other hand, offer a familiar and personal touch but can be costly and less environmentally friendly. The choice between digital and traditional menus is not just about keeping up with a trend but about finding the right balance that is consistent with the restaurant’s values and the progressing expectations of diners.
28.What drove restaurants to digital menus in the first place
A.The aim to speed up ordering. B.The desire to improve menu appeal.
C.The influence of customer preference. D.The need to provide touchless services.
29.What do the underlined words “turn more tables” mean in paragraph 3
A.Add more tables to the existing space.
B.Serve more customers in a given time.
C.Transform tables into digital interfaces.
D.Switch waitstaff between tables frequently.
30.What is expected of a traditional menu according to Sara
A.A rush to decide on orders. B.A strong touch of familiarity.
C.A bridge to linking people. D.A relaxed tone to chat with waiters.
31.What is purpose of the last paragraph
A.To describe the technological setup for digital menus.
B.To explore various factors in the options of two menus.
C.To discuss the importance of following industry trends.
D.To compare the weaknesses and strengths of two menus.

The recent “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” in Glasgow, UK, brought children to tears, angered parents and amused people who read about it. After seeing online advertising for an event, people paid 35 each to attend. But it wasn’t as promised: instead of exceptional creations and a plenty of chocolate, families arrived at a mostly abandoned warehouse featuring a sad-looking castle and confused actors. It turned out that the marketing materials — and the actors’ scripts — were generated by AI. This aroused a question: in the era of AI, how can we tell whether we are being tricked
There is an arms race going on in the digital world. But the competition between deception (欺骗) and honesty is as old as life on Earth. Disinformation certainly has been around prior to the existence of humans.
Cancer cells, for instance, trick the immune system so that they can’t be removed if our body can’t tell friend from enemy. Beyond this, cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and cheated them into raising the young of cuckoos at the expense of their own. More complex are cases where a certain kind of monkey may make a sharp cry as though a hunter is nearby to trick their fellow monkeys into running away from food so that they can take the food themselves.
This links to what is known in biology as the Red Queen hypothesis (假说), a concept inspired by Alice in Wonderland, where the Red Queen tells Alice, “Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.” This effect refers to a case where two species continually compete to outsmart each other. In each conflict, a new strategy by one party forces the other to adapt - or face exclusion in the cold game of natural selection.
Disinformation today is a more complex case in point. The only difference is the level of complexity and the number of people involved. The good news is that we know enough about evolutionary thinking to predict which steps bad actors will take next. We just need to use our understanding of evolutionary biology to make traps of our own - disinformation traps. Armed with knowledge, we can defeat disinformation.
32.What was the outcome of the “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” event
A.A source of fun with amusing actors.
B.A failure with everything unsatisfying.
C.A feast with many chocolate creations.
D.A huge success with the assistance of AI.
33.Why does the article mention cancer cells, cuckoos, and monkeys
A.To show examples of natural disinformation.
B.To claim disinformation as a new human issue.
C.To highlight biodiversity and survival methods.
D.To compare deception and intelligence in species.
34.What does the Red Queen hypothesis assume
A.Species adopt a single strategy to evolve.
B.Species have to run quickly to avoid exclusion.
C.Species evolve through competition for shelters.
D.Species evolve constantly to keep pace with others.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Honesty: A Battle Lost in the Modern World
B.Disinformation: An Evolutionary Arms Race
C.Red Queen’s Race: Deception and Adaptation
D.Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Deception

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

根据第一段中“A powerful new member didn’t like Franklin(一位有权势的新成员不喜欢富兰克林)”和第二段中“When we next met in the House, he spoke to me, (which he had never done before) and did so politely(当我们再次在众议院见面时,他和我说话(他以前从来没有这样做过),而且非常礼貌)”可知,一开始那位新成员不喜欢富兰克林,富兰克林借书归还后那位成员变得非常礼貌,由此推知富兰克林借书是为了改进他们的关系,故选B。
根据第三段中“In the first group, the lead researcher (who acted a bit annoying) personally asked each competitor to return the money to help him out.(在第一组中,首席研究员(他的行为有点令人讨厌)亲自要求每个参赛者归还钱来帮助他)”和“Those in the first group had a much more positive impression of him than did those in the third group. The result of the second group suggested that an indirect request for a favor does not endear you to others.(第一组的人比第三组的人对他的印象要积极得多。第二组的结果表明,间接地请求帮助不会让你变得更亲近)”可知,第一组中首席研究员亲自要求每个参赛者归还钱来帮助他,结果表明第一组的人对他的印象要积极得多,且研究员间接的请求不会让别人更喜欢他,由此推知直接请求帮助决定了这位研究员被喜欢的程度,故选D。
23.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Another explanation comes from the desire to build good relationships. Humans are naturally wired to want to help others.(另一种解释来自于建立良好关系的愿望。人类天生就想要帮助别人)”可知,第二个解释和人性有关,故选A。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍习语的特点与表达优势,结合亲身经历和实例讲解多款习语,指出习语对交流的重要性,呼吁人们学习习语。
24.推理判断题。根据第一段“These colorful gems (宝石), idioms with meanings that can’t be inferred from individual words, are important to help “spice up” our daily conversations. (这些色彩斑斓的宝石,即那些其含义无法从单个单词中直接推断出来的习语,对于丰富我们日常的交流内容具有重要作用。)”和第二段中“Everyone occasionally struggles to find the right words to express themselves. (每个人偶尔都会遇到难以找到恰当言语来表达自己这种状况。)”可知,习语为我们的交流增添了趣味和有效性。故选D。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段“One of the idioms I distinctly remember is ‘keep your shirt on’.
根据第四段“You’ve barely started, and it’s evident you won’t meet the deadline. Rather than worrying, you look for a positive aspect, hoping to find a ‘silver lining’ in this mess. The idiom ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ expresses this feeling. (你才刚刚开始,很明显你无法按时完成任务。与其忧心忡忡,不如寻找积极的一面,希望能从这一混乱局面中找到一丝希望。这个成语“每片乌云都有银边”就表达了这种感受。)”可知,如果你想在困境中加强乐观情绪,那么“every cloud has a silver lining (黑暗中总有一线光明)”这个习语是合适的。故选C。
27.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Educating ourselves about idioms will also allow us to add emphasis on subjects we talk about. In addition to my own experiences, it is high time that we learned about idioms. (了解一些习语也能帮助我们在交流时更有力地表达观点。除了自己的亲身经历之外,我们也该去学习一些习语了。)”可知,作者在最后一段主要呼吁采取行动去学习习语。故选A。

根据第二段“This transition was motivated by the need for contactless services initially, which have become increasingly important in light of recent health and safety concerns.(这一转变最初是由对无接触服务的需求推动的,鉴于最近的健康和安全问题,无接触服务变得越来越重要。)”
根据第三段“but I think U.S. restaurants will use QR-code menus in a way that will help them turn more tables and save costs on the expenses of menu and labor.” This statement reflects a common view among restaurant owners who see digital menus as a way to improve operational efficiency.(但我认为,美国餐厅会以一种有助于________、节省菜单和人力成本的方式来使用二维码菜单。
根据第四段“I love the feeling of a menu in my hands; it sets the tone for the dining experience. I can take my time and really connect with the server. There’s something about the personal touch that screens simply can’t match.(我喜欢手里拿着菜单的感觉,它为用餐体验定下了基调。我可以慢慢来,真正与服务生建立联系。屏幕无法比拟的是人与人之间的那种亲密感。)”可知,根据Sarah的说法,传统菜单应该是连接人们的桥梁。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The decision to adopt digital menus or stick with traditional ones has implications for customer experience, operational efficiency, and environmental impact. Digital menus offer a number of strengths. However, they also require an initial investment in technology and may not be suitable for all types of restaurants or customers. Traditional menus, on the other hand, offer a familiar and personal touch but can be costly and less environmentally friendly. The choice between digital and traditional menus is not just about keeping up with a trend but about finding the right balance that is consistent with the restaurant’s values and the progressing expectations of diners.(采用电子菜单还是坚持传统菜单,这一决定会对顾客体验、运营效率和环境影响产生影响。

根据第二段“Disinformation certainly has been around prior to the existence of humans.(虚假信息在人类存在之前就已经存在了。)”和第三段“Cancer cells, for instance, trick the immune system so that they can’t be removed if our body can’t tell friend from enemy. Beyond this, cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and cheated them into raising the young of cuckoos at the expense of their own. More complex are cases where a certain kind of monkey may make a sharp cry as though a hunter is nearby to trick their fellow monkeys into running away from food so that they can take the food themselves.(例如,癌细胞会欺骗免疫系统,这样如果我们的身体不能区分敌友,它们就不能被清除。除此之外,布谷鸟把蛋下在其他鸟的巢里,欺骗它们以牺牲自己的幼鸟为代价来抚养布谷鸟的幼鸟。更复杂的情况是,某种猴子可能会发出尖锐的叫声,好像猎人就在附近,欺骗其他猴子远离食物,这样它们就可以自己拿走食物。)”可知,文章提到癌细胞、布谷鸟和猴子是为了展示自然界中虚假信息的例子。故选A。
根据第四段“This effect refers to a case where two species continually compete to outsmart each other. In each conflict, a new strategy by one party forces the other to adapt — or face exclusion in the cold game of natural selection.(这种效应指的是两个物种不断竞争,试图比对方更聪明。

66.Dear Alex,
It’s great to hear about your interest in Chinese festivals. I believe the Mid-Autumn Festival best reflects the value of family reunion.
This tradition is not just about eating; it represents a deep cultural belief that just as the moon is fullest on this night, families should also be whole. Even in modern life, it remains a cherished pause for emotional reconnection. While similar to Christmas in its focus on family, the Mid-Autumn Festival draws more on nature’s rhythm than religious tradition. If you ever visit China during this time, I suggest joining a local family for a moon-viewing evening — it’s the best way to feel its true warmth.
Hope this helps!
Yours,
Li Hua

67.范文:
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.
