Young Entrepreneurs Fight Plastic Pollution
Background: The theme of this year’s World Environment Day (June 5) is “Ending Plastic Pollution”. In China, a group of young entrepreneurs have transformed waste such as plastic bottles, fishing nets, and old bicycle tires into fashionable and practical products, contributing to the construction of a “plastic-free future”.
Details of Young Entrepreneurs’ Practical Projects
Market Feedback and Consumer Cognition (认知)
Sales Performance: The sale of Ren Yao’s bamboo bicycles has grown from 12 units in 2016 to 300-400 units per year currently;
Consumption Trend: More and more Chinese consumers choose green products and recognize the concept of environmental protection;
Existing Concern: Some consumers believe that green products are priced relatively high.
Entrepreneurs’ Views on Green Products
Supa: The high price of green products comes from green practices like proper waste handling; as more enterprises participate in green production, product choices will become richer;
Gao Chao: Young consumers tend to choose products matching their own values. UOOSEE uses long-lasting materials (backpacks have a service life of over 10 years) to pursue “sustainable fashion” rather than short-term trends;
Ren Yao: Green products must prioritize quality (consumers will not buy them only for environment); optimistic about the global competitiveness of Chinese green brands, believing that China’s strong production capacity can support high-quality products to stand out.
21.What is the main purpose of the young entrepreneurs mentioned in the text
A.To promote Chinese brands in the global market.
B.To create fashionable products for young buyers.
C.To fight plastic pollution by recycling waste materials.
D.To prove the value of bamboo as a replacement for steel.
22.Why are green products often more expensive according to Supa
A.They use rare and valuable materials.
B.They require proper handling of waste.
C.They are designed to last for over 10 years.
D.They need to pass strict EU tests.
23.What can we infer from Ren Yao’s bamboo bicycles
A.The bearing capacity of bamboo bicycles is lighter than that of steel bicycles.
B.Chinese consumers have become more willing to buy green products.
C.Bamboo was widely accepted as a high-quality material at first.
D.Riding a bamboo bicycle across the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is easy.
B
Scientists in China have developed a technology that can replace high-strength plastics used in home facilities with bamboo fiber. Bamboo shoots up when it rains. Its growth is so fast that raw material costs are low. According to researchers at Northeast Forestry University, bioplastic made from bamboo is similar to oil-based plastic in strength, shapeability, and thermal stability (热稳定性), but can decompose (分解) in soil within fifty days. It can also be fully recycled while maintaining 90% of its strength.
As plastic pollution worsens, bioplastics — plastics made from natural materials — are gaining popularity, but they still account for only 0.5% of the more than 400 million tons of plastic produced every year. That is because bioplastics have lower mechanical strength than oil-based plastics and are difficult to apply easily in common production processes.
The Chinese team developed a method to produce plastic from cellulose, the fibrous component of bamboo. They first treated bamboo by adding zinc chloride (ZnCl ) and a simple acid. In experiments, the team said bamboo-based bioplastic showed mechanical strength outperforming that of conventional plant-based bioplastic. In tests of mechanical and thermal stability and shapeability, bamboo-based bioplastic demonstrated its potential as an industrial alternative.
The development of bamboo-based bioplastic by researchers at Northeast Forestry University represents a significant advancement in the pursuit of sustainable development. With its impressive mechanical properties and biodegradability, bamboo-based bioplastic stands out as a promising candidate for reducing plastic waste and reliance on oil.
However, the path to future widespread adoption requires overcoming challenges related to production scalability (可扩展性) and market acceptance. As industries explore the potential of bamboo-based bioplastic, the question remains: Can this innovation truly replace traditional plastics and transform our approach to sustainable production
24.What can we learn about the bamboo-based bioplastic
A.It is a sustainable plastic alternative.
B.It is difficult to break down in soil naturally.
C.It loses original strength when decomposing.
D.It is second to oil-based plastics in shapability.
25.What is the key advantage of bamboo-based bioplastic over past bioplastic
A.Simpler recycling process.
B.Higher mechanical strength.
C.Cheaper raw materials.
D.Lower carbon footprint.
26.What is a challenge for the widespread use of bamboo-based bioplastic
A.Market recognition.
B.Production process.
C.Thermal stability.
D.Technology innovation.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Bamboo: The Green Steel
B.Bamboo: Can it save our planet
C.Bamboo-based bioplastic: Is it really eco-friendly
D.Bamboo-based bioplastic: Strong Material, Greener Future

Every morning at 5:30 am, a quiet movement unfolds on a Kerala riverbank. Led by one man, Saji Valuvassery, this floating classroom is teaching people to swim — for free. More than a skill, it’s a lifeline, a community spirit, and a powerful reminder that courage can be contagious (具有感染力的).
On a quiet February morning in 2009, a school picnic to the scenic spot near the Periyar River turned into a disaster. A boat carrying 15 kids and their teacher overturned in the river, leaving no survivors. The disaster shook Saji Valuvassery, a shop owner. Haunted (困扰) by the thought of the young lives lost, he began offering swimming classes in the very river that had taken them, for free. Little did he know that this simple gesture would turn the banks of the Periyar River into a place filled with laughter and community warmth.
Saji began by teaching his own kids to swim, then their friends, and then a few kids from around the neighbourhood. Word spread. More kids came. Then adults. Today, that small effort has become the “Valasseril River Swimming Club”. Over 10,000 people have learned to swim here, and 2,000 children have been trained to swim across 780 metres of the river — all in one go.
The swimming classes have also grown into a space for sharing knowledge and stories, where everyone who learns is encouraged to give back, keeping the spirit of community flowing as constantly as the river itself. “Once anyone passes their advanced swimming level, they are required to do 6 days of free service, to ensure others’ safety,” explains Saji.
The Valasseril River Swimming Club teaches people from November to May. It pauses (暂停) during the monsoon season (季风季节) and reopens in November, when the river is calm and safe again. Every November, when it restarts, volunteers return voluntarily, led by their shared sense of purpose. When asked what keeps people coming back, Saji simply says, “People go to places where they find happiness.”
28.Why did Saji start the swimming classes
A.To connect with volunteers.
B.To enrich community activities.
C.To profit from teaching swimming.
D.To stop people from dying in water.
29.What does the author want to show with the figures in paragraph 3
A.The challenge facing Saji’s swimming club.
B.Saji’s wide influence on kids in the community.
C.The popularity of swimming near the Periyar River.
D.Saji’s remarkable achievement in swimming education.
30.What will advanced swimmers need to do after completing their training
A.Teach swimming skills for free.
B.Serve as a short-term safety guardian.
C.Share their stories with other learners.
D.Volunteer during the monsoon season.
31.Which of the following best describes Saji
A.Selfless and caring.
B.Courageous but impractical.
C.Curious but impatient.
D.Brave and generous.
D
Artificial intelligence has persuaded a lot of folks that we need to undertake a comprehensive reform of education. Now that chatbots can speedily access information and answer complex questions, why bother memorizing historical facts or quotations Shouldn’t we instead teach kids to think critically and solve problems and leave the boring duties to computers
There’s a problem with these arguments: humans require knowledge to think creatively. Outsourcing our memory and cognition (认知) to Google and AI risks making us less intelligent and more subject to false information.
In 2000. American educator E.D. Hirsch noted in his essay: The internet places information at our fingertips, but using it demands existing knowledge’ stores. This principle drove the UK’s 2014 curriculum reform empowering multiplication table mastery (乘法口诀表) by age nine — not merely for calculation skills. but to build the neural frameworks (神经框架) enabling complex reasoning. As former schools minister Nick Gibb stressed: “Google it’s effectively depends on what’s stored in long-term memory.”
“The suggestion we should outsource our memory to “free up” limited space for more creative thinking is based on a misconception — we’re likely to overestimate our intelligence, mistaking knowledge found on the internet for our own,” writes Nicholas Carr in The Shallows. “When we start using the Web as a replacement for personal memory, bypassing the inner processes of consolidation (巩固), we risk emptying our minds of their riches.”
Indeed, looking stuff up on Google often results in us not being able to recall it later — either because our brains are conditioned to think we don’t need to remember it, or because the internet, mobile phones and social media distract our attention, or both. If students come to rely on machines not just to recall facts but to think for them, it might not just be memory that suffers: cognition and creativity could atrophy, too.
The solution lies not in rejecting technology, but in rebalancing its role. The UK’s knowledge-rich curriculum, despite disagreements, recognizes this truth: human intelligence advances when technology adds to rather than replaces learning.
32.What is the author’s concern about AI’s influence on education
A.Students avoid complex questions.
B.Teachers prioritize memorizing facts.
C.Students develop poor analysis and judgment.
D.Teachers ignore students' creativity.
33.What do experts consistently emphasize
A.The necessity for technology improvement.
B.The importance of knowledge storage.
C.The reduction of internet usage.
D.The replacement of complex reasoning.
34.What does the underlined word “atrophy” in paragraph 5 mean
A.Decline. B.Disappear. C.Strengthen. D.Stabilize.
35.Which of the following may the author agree
A.Limit AI to education. B.Avoid referring to AI in study.
C.Search online for solutions beforehand. D.Use technology as an assistant.

Mo was waiting in the corridor with her class on Friday morning. She felt sick and her knees were shaking. She always felt sick during the exam week. She had two more exams that day and physics was the first. She really hated physics. Terry glanced back at her from the front of the queue and then looked away quickly. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything ... Little Miss Perfect!
Terry was looking back at her again. “So what’s wrong with her ” Nina standing behind Mo had noticed Terry looking back at them. “I thought you were friends.” ”Yeah, so did I,” said Mo, “She’d promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then just ignored all my calls and texts. Nina was trying to look sympathetic. However, it was time to go into the exam room. Mo gave Nina a worried look and followed them.
She had been staring at question number five for at least ten minutes without any clue, when she looked up. Terry was sitting a few rows in front of her to the right and Mo couldn’t believe her eyes! She had her phone on her left knee and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good grades She just felt really angry at Terry. She almost put her hand up to tell Mr Reed, but Terry had already put her phone away when Mo looked up again. She looked back over her shoulder at Mo and smiled sadly.
It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she was often in trouble for failing exams, while Little Miss Perfect had been cheating all this time. The next exam was history, which was Mo’s favorite and best subject but it didn’t help her feel any better. She was furious with Terry. She wanted to talk to her but she’d left instantly the exam had finished and now Mo couldn’t find her. She didn’t know what to do. Should she tell a teacher Just then, Mr Reed walked past her table on his way out. “Mr Reed!” called Mo before she could stop herself.

【原文】W: Have you ever seen this photo before
M: No, who are all those people
W: Top sportsmen and women from various fields. The idea was to show the huge range of body types that exist even among top athletes.
M: Interesting I suppose different physical features help with different sports.
W: Exactly. I mean, look, Tara Lipinski is only 155 centimeters, 41 centimeters shorter than Lisa Leslie, yet they’re both world champions.
M: Well, height is a huge advantage in basketball. Maybe the opposite is true for figure skating.
W: It is. Being shorter makes it easier to balance.
M: Wow, look at this guy. You’d never guess he was an athlete 175 centimeters tall 168 kilograms. Wouldn’t that make him seriously overweight
W: By traditional standards Yet he held every American weightlifting record in his class.
M: Really
W: Yeah, he long since retired, but according to his online information page, he is still sporty and energetic.
M: That’s amazing.
W: I’ve always wrestled with my self image, but this has shown me that body type can be strong, healthy and beautiful. It’s just about finding the right sport, like I’ll never be thin enough for long distance running, but I’m the best in the school at the 100 meter.

【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了人工智能对教育的影响,强调不能依赖它而忽视知识存储。
32.推理判断题。根据第二段的“There’s a problem with these arguments: humans require knowledge to think creatively. Outsourcing our memory and cognition (认知) to Google and AI risks making us less intelligent and more subject to false information.(这些论点有问题:人类需要知识来创造性地思考。

Mr. Reed asked Mo to look up in the next exam and nod if she saw that Terry had her phone out. Mo made sure she was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam. When she noticed Terry took her phone out under the table, Mo looked up and nodded to Mr. Reed. Terry was too busy with her phone to even hear him approaching. He didn’t say a word, just took her exam paper, tore it in half and told Terry to leave the room. Terry started crying as she walked to the door. Everyone was staring at her and Mo felt a strange mixture of emotions. She knew she had done the right thing by reporting the cheating, but seeing Terry so distraught made her uneasy.
Mo was walking towards the school gate when she heard Terry calling her behind. Mo could see that Terry had been crying, her face pale and her eyes red. She felt sorry she had been avoiding Mo lately because her dad was seriously ill and he had an operation that day, so she was trying to text her mum to see how the operation was going when Mr. Reed caught her. “ I know it’s rather stupid to take my phone out during the examination. Will you forgive me ” said Terry in a shivering voice. Mo took a deep breath and said, “Terry, of course I forgive you. You already feel the pain brought by the mistake you made.” Retaking the exam is hard, but a teenager has to learn to reflect, grow, and eventually become a better self-disciplined person.
