In northern China, people love a special winter food called frozen pears. Their skin is dark, and they are hard as stone. Hold one, and your hands will feel ice-cold at once. The cold transforms the pear from within. After a little thaw (解冻), the fruit becomes soft and full of juice. Inside, they are sweet and juicy.
In Harbin, a city in northeast China, people make frozen pears by leaving autumn pears outside in the cold. The freezing weather turns their skin black. Locals enjoy frozen pears in a fun three-step way. First, leave the pear in cold water for about 15 minutes. A thin layer of ice will form on the skin. Next, break the ice, take a small bite of the skin, and drink the sweet juice. Finally, take off the skin and enjoy the soft fruit inside.

On coronation(加冕礼) day, Leo put on his old wool coat, broke a wild rose branch and made it into a small crown. He said firmly: “The first duty of a king is to care for his people. This rose crown reminds me what makes a true king.” He felt a heavy weight in his heart.

56.Colmar, a city in France, has a clever way to cut food waste: giving free chickens to its people. This project called “One family, one hen” started in 2015.
At first, more than 200 homes from the city joined the project. It turned out to be a big success. Since 2022, all 20 parts of the city have taken part.

So far, the project has given out over 5,000 chickens. These chickens eat kitchen leftovers. A chicken lives up to 4 years on average and eats 150g of leftovers every day. This means 2737.5 tonnes (公吨) less waste over 10 years.

I’m Li Hua, a Grade 8 student. I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer at Yancheng Red-crowned Crane Nature Reserve during the winter vacation.
I have always loved cranes and I want to help protect these beautiful rare birds. I know Yancheng has a warm and wet winter, with lots of wetlands that are perfect for cranes to live in. But the area faces problems like water pollution and loss of habitat. These issues deeply concern me, and I’m determined to make a difference.
If I become a volunteer, I will help pick up litter to keep the environment clean, and tell visitors not to make loud noises that might disturb the cranes.
I hope to get this chance to learn more about wild animal protection. Please reply to me at lihua@.
Thank you!
