I was never very tidy, while my roommate Kate was very organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine were always hiding somewhere. She even marked everything. I always searched for everything. Over time, Kate became tidier, while I grew messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her calling, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Before I could even reply, my shoes suddenly flew toward me. I jumped to my feet and started shouting. She shouted back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From what she said, I could tell right away that her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, crying.
That was something she should not go through on the phone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks, and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I didn’t even notice Kate had sat up.
She was watching, her tears dried, and her expression showed surprise. Warmth filled my heart as her hands gently held mine—this was the first time we’d touched without anger in months. When I looked up, her eyes were soft, bright with a smile. She said, “Thanks,” her voice quiet but warm.
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in when we had differences, keeping our room tidy, and holding on to our new understanding. It wasn’t just about making space for each other—we started to truly see and respect each other. This experience taught us that living together means learning to understand and care for one another.

Every year, a lot of food is wasted, and kitchens are one of the biggest causes. The Zero-Waste Kitchen aims to change this by helping people cook and manage food with as little waste as possible. This concept (概念) can go back to the 1980s in the United States, but it was Bea Johnson’s 2013 book, Zero Waste Home, that made it widely popular.
Why is the Zero-Waste Kitchen important Food waste is more than throwing away leftovers (剩饭). It also includes wasting the water, energy, and work used to grow, move, and make food. Cutting down on kitchen waste not only saves money but also helps the environment and makes better use of natural resources (资源).
Many experts believe that small changes in cooking and shopping habits can help people practice a zero-waste lifestyle. Here are some simple ways to start.
Plan before you shop. Buy only what you need. A famous Chef, Massimo Bottura says, “Cooking is an act of love, but it requires planning to avoid waste.” We can make a shopping list according to the planned meals. Then we will buy only what is necessary, reducing the chance of food going bad.
Store food properly. As a food storage expert, Karen Kingston notes, “Proper storage can make the life of food longer and keep its good value for health. For example, using the right boxes and knowing how to keep different kinds of food can help stop food from going bad.”
Make good use of leftovers. “Leftovers are an opportunity for creativity,” says Chef Dan Barber. Instead of throwing them away, we can use leftovers to create new meals. For example, leftover vegetables can be used to make soup, and overripe (熟透的) fruit can be used for juice. If leftovers cannot be eaten, they can be composted (制成堆肥) to improve soil and reduce waste.
All in all, the Zero-Waste Kitchen is a simple and practical way to protect our planet. By making small changes in daily life, we can all help make the future cleaner and greener. Next time you cook, can you find one way to waste less
27.According to the passage, why is cutting down on kitchen waste important
A.Because it is an easy task to complete in our everyday life.
B.Because kitchen waste is the main cause of resource shortage.
C.Because it helps to save on costs and benefits the environment.
D.Because kitchen waste is responsible for most of the water waste.
28.Why does the writer use the example of Chef Massimo Bottura in Paragraph 4
A.To teach readers how to make a shopping list.
B.To explain why shopping needs better planning.
C.To encourage people to cook more often at home.
D.To show us how famous chefs cook delicious meals.
29.What is the passage mainly about
A.How the Zero-Waste Kitchen concept developed over time.
B.Why it is important for us to live a zero-waste lifestyle.
C.How we can practice a zero-waste kitchen in daily life.
D.What effect food waste has on today’s environment.

If you’re thinking about what job you want in the future, it’s likely you’ve heard this one before: “Just do what you enjoy!” In today’s world, making money isn’t easy no matter what you do, so why not do something you truly enjoy That may sound like a smart plan: You move somewhere with a low cost of living, and even if the thing you love doesn’t make much money, you can still live well. But in reality, things aren’t that simple.
Passion (热情) alone can’t always carry you through. Doing the job you love can bring you great feelings when life is easy and you are in a cheerful state. However, things can go wrong when you feel tired, feel lonely or get sick. Passion alone may not be enough. At those times, you may begin to ask yourself: “Is this really the right life for me ”
Thinking about the job opportunities you passed by, you might even wonder if giving up that better job you could have had was a smart choice. I completely understand how that feels. As a writer, I truly enjoy my work. But there are days—like today—when it’s outside, I haven’t slept well, and all I want is to stay in bed. Still, even when I don’t feel like it, I still sit down and write. Why
Because passion isn’t the only thing that drives me. I also have a sense of purpose. I know that my writing helps people, and that keeps me going—even when passion fades. Actually, I have been through it many times—when I sit at my desk, staring (盯着) at the empty screen, feeling lost or tired. Writing doesn’t always feel fun. But because I have a purpose, I get through it every time.
Over time, I’ve learned that passion makes you excited at first, but purpose helps you keep going when things get hard. If you know your work helps others, even in a small way, it feels more meaningful.
To find your purpose, you need to try different things. Do different jobs, talk to new people, explore new places, and see what makes you feel happy and useful. You don’t need to know all the answers right now, but you do need to keep learning and keep exploring.
One day, you may find the place where your passion and your purpose come together. And when that happens, I hope you build a life and a job that you truly enjoy.
30.You will most probably enjoy your work in the long run if you ________.
A.move to a place with an affordable cost of living
B.choose a job that makes you feel excited every day
C.enjoy your work while knowing why it matters to you
D.follow your heart without caring about others’ opinions
31.What does the word “fades” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean
A.Grows slowly. B.Becomes weaker.
C.Moves quickly. D.Stays the same.
32.What do you know about passion and purpose from the passage
A.Purpose usually comes before passion in jobs.
B.Purpose is the key for people to lead a rich life.
C.People make a smart plan with purpose and passion.
D.People need purpose more than passion at hard times.
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To show how people can find their purpose in jobs.
B.To explain why passion alone is not enough at work.
C.To compare different ways of choosing jobs in modern times.
D.To introduce the challenge of making good job choices in life.

Buddy Reading
Reading a good book is really a great journey. When a reader gets into a well-written book, it’s just like going into a new world and living someone else’s life for some time. This experience becomes even more wonderful when it’s done by buddy reading. That means two or more people read together.
During buddy reading, the buddies do lots of different reading activities. They may take turns to read out loud, share their favorite parts, or talk about the characters and the story. For example, they can stop at an exciting part of the story and argue about what will happen next. This not only makes reading more fun but also helps them understand the book better.
Although having students of the same age do buddy reading is a good choice, schools often like to match older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a program, and it has been very successful. In this two-year program, both the younger and older readers have got a lot of benefits. They have learned to be kind and patient when listening to each other. A younger student may be a little shy at first when reading out loud, and the older buddy has to wait patiently for him to finish. Also, this program gives chances to practice important life-long skills. Take leadership for example. Older students can lead the talk about the book, helping the younger ones to think carefully. Communication skills are also improved as they share their ideas about the story. Jason, a student from Green School, shared his experience. He said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident in his reading and speaking after knowing that he was a role model.
What’s more, the school has become a more united (团结的) community because of buddy reading. The reading buddies are looking forward to their meetings and feel a strong connection. The students are really excited when they see their reading buddies in the school hallway.
Now that summer vacation is coming, it’s a perfect time to start reading. So, why not get together with a friend, choose a book you both like, and start this great reading journey together
34.What does buddy reading mean
35.How long did the reading program in Green School last
36.Why did Jason think reading to a younger buddy was helpful

Dear Harry,
I’m glad to hear that you’re preparing for the Campus Safety Awareness Week. Here are some ideas for you.
To begin with, I suggest making safety posters. You can put them up in the school hallway, which will help students realize the importance of safety in our daily lives. Moreover, holding a speech competition about campus safety is a great choice. It can not only increase their knowledge in campus safety but also develop their awareness of following the rules.
I believe these activities will help create a safer environment for everyone at school.
