A new and unusual way to relax has become popular in many Chinese cities. That is hugging trees. Young people take comfort from it. On weekends in parks, you might see people standing quietly with their arms around big trees, even talking to them softly.
Hundreds of people online share their tree-hugging experiences which make themselves less-stressed (紧张的) and worried. “After hugging an old pine tree for 10 minutes, my tiredness-disappeared,” wrote a college student on social media. In their opinion, it is a way of keeping a close relationship with the natural world. By hugging a tree, some of them feel that the tree is hugging them back. “The rough bark (树皮) feels like warm hands holding me,” said another young man.
One woman gave up her job because of too much work pressure (压力). According to her, hugging trees helps her a lot. She totally enjoys herself in hugging trees. Every morning, she visits a ginkgo tree (银杏树) near her home. “Hugging trees helps me calm down and lets me return to a natural state (状态). I feel so free and feel the world is so big: I have also become braver than before,” she said. Now she teaches others how to choose good trees for hugging.
Hugging trees is actually a kind of psychological therapy which first came from northern Europe. In those cold countries, people believe trees have healing power (治愈力量). A study has also shown that hugging can lead people to give off oxytocin (催产素). Oxytocin is able to create feelings of love and make people less stressed. When the April rain stopped, I found a broken flowerpot in front of Mrs. Lin’s house. The old lady now sat alone on her porch (门廊), looking at the wild yard. She used to grow the best roses in our neighborhood. Her son worked abroad, and her once colorful garden had turned into a sea of weeds.
“Can I help clean it up ” I asked, holding my pink watering can (洒水壶). Mrs. Lin’s white hair shone as she nodded. “You’ll need stronger tools,” she said, handing me a pair of small gardening gloves she kept for visiting grandchildren.
Every afternoon after homework, I became Mrs. Lin’s little helper. She taught me in simple English:
- “Sunflowers turn east! Like kids watching the blackboard!”
- “Pour water at the bottom! Like feeding a baby!”
- “Red-spotted ladybugs (七星瓢虫) are helpers! They fight plant enemies!”
One day, I cut a caterpillar (毛毛虫) in half by mistake while cutting leaves. I thought it was dead. Tears filled my eyes until Mrs. Lin placed a magnifying glass (放大镜) in my hand. “Look!” she said, “The other half moved bravely. Nature teaches us to grow through pain.” She put the hurt insect in a box with green leaves.
After weeks of work, golden sunflowers stood tall like soldiers, and red roses waved hello. But the biggest surprise came later — the box that held the hurt caterpillar now had a yellow butterfly!
At our garden tea party, neighbors brought homemade snacks. Mrs. Lin carefully opened the box, and the butterfly landed on my nose before flying towards the pink flowers. “You didn’t just fix my garden,” Mrs. Lin held my hand, “you brought back life’s music.”

Do you know how weather affects our lives Well, it affects where we go, what we do, and what we wear. And it also affects how we feel and behave (表现). It is a big part of our lives!
We often use weather expressions to describe (描述) how we feel. For example, if we are feeling ill, we say we are “under the weather”. If we are feeling stressed and busy, we can say that we are “snowed under”. We use “bad” weather (rainy, stormy etc.) to describe a bad mood (心情), and “good” weather (sunny, warm, etc.) to describe a good mood.
And that is not all. The weather can even change the way we feel! For example, sunlight helps our body to produce vitamin D (维生素D). This vitamin can improve our mood. But some parts of the world get less sunlight in winter, so people can feel unusually sad then. However, when it is hot and sunny, some people may get angry easily too! Scientists are still studying how the weather changes the way people feel and behave.

“Today is the International Day of Happiness,” she said. “It’s a day to be happy!”
“So did you have a happy day at school ”
“Of course! I played volleyball with my friend and I enjoyed it so much.”
“Good,” I said. “If you’re happy, then I am happy, too.” Talking about happiness with my daughter made me think more about happiness.
How can I get happiness Maybe I should feel happy when my wife (妻子) says my cooking is very good. I know she’s very kind, because I’m not a really good cook. Maybe I should be happy when my best friend says I play basketball well, but I know he says that just to make me happy. I know I’m not good at basketball.
