Tiny Treasures: How Chinese Fridge Magnets (冰箱贴) Share History

Xidao Island, a fishing village off the coast of Sanya, has three old fishing boats that no longer set sail. They have become a library on the sea that serves as a cultural center.
“The idea came about by chance,” said Qin Jiayi, founder of the boat library. After fixing the boats, her team had nowhere to place them. At the same time, a project developing Xidao Island into a popular tourist place was underway (在进行中). Luckily with the help of the government, the three boats finally found their home and became a library, which opened to the public in 2017.
Each of the three boats has a special use. The first is a free reading room with many books, covering children’s stories, ocean science and environmental protection. Another boat holds exhibitions (展览) and reading activities—such as story-sharing parties for kids and book clubs for visitors. The third one shows childhood-themed things. The boat library quickly became a “spiritual home” for local people and drew thousands of visitors.
Qin and her team know the library won’t make them much money. But they still keep it running, because they believe in reading’s power and want to do more through it. Because of Xidao Island’s beautiful coral reefs (珊瑚礁) and rich natural treasures, the library has become an environmental education place. I didn't expect the strange feeling on my tongue (舌头) when I first tried Sichuan food in Chengdu. Sitting in front of a boiling hot pot and local dishes, I saw plates full of red pepper oil, red peppers and onions. At first, my tongue and face felt hot, and my mouth felt strange. The waiter smiled at my sweaty (流汗的) face—I was clearly new to spicy food. But soon, that strange feeling turned good—it cooled me down!
This special taste comes from Sichuan peppercorns (花椒). They are small but powerful, giving a "má" taste (numbing). Red peppers add "là" taste (spicy) —together, they make the famous "málà" taste of Sichuan food.
This delicious málà taste isn't by chance. Chengdu is wet most of the year. "Chengdu's weather is often wet, " said the restaurant owner Uncle Cheng. "Spicy food makes people sweaty. It helps them eat more and feel better on wet days, " added the cook Aunt Gan. As I ate, I felt cooler and wanted more! I wasn't hungry at first, but soon I could eat a lot. By the way, warm drinks are better with hot pot. Cold water may hurt your stomach when eating spicy, oily food, but warm drinks help digestion (消化) and cool down the heat.
People here love má là food not only because it tastes good, but also because having hot pot is a happy way to spend time with friends. They all sit around one pot, talking, laughing, and sharing food together. As the Chinese saying goes, "There's no problem a hot pot can't solve. " The food may be gone the next day, but the good memories last forever.
