Last weekend, as families hiked through hills near Karjat, Nehal Shah watched children play in a waterfall,
chase butterflies, and sit quietly as cows crossed the trail. scenes like these reminded her why she had chosen a
different path for her own child — and for many others.
Nehal grew up in Mumbai, but her childhood was far from confined. She spent hours tending plants with her
father, learning to care for birds and animals. Those early experiences quietly shaped her bond with nature. Years
later, while working as a media professional, she was introduced to trekking(远足) through a workplace club.
Exploring the Western Ghats deepened her love for the outdoors and soon became an essential part of her life.
Marriage did not slow her down. Nehal continued backpacking across the country, but motherhood brought
new questions. Living in a city surrounded by buildings and screens, she noticed how little space children had to
explore freely. Parks and seaside walks felt insufficient. She began to worry that something important was being
lost.
Unwilling to accept this as normal, Nehal decided to act. In 2016, when her son Dev was just two and a half,
she planned a simple camping trip to Kamshet, near Mumbai. Unsure if other parents would join, she shared the
idea on social media. To her surprise, over thirty people showed up. The children adapted easily to the outdoors,
unconcerned with comfort, while parents discovered that many of their fears existed only in their minds.
From then on, there was no turning back. Dev joined jungle safaris and Himalayan treks, once completing a
difficult climb where many adults turned back. Inspired by these journeys, Nehal founded Heart & Soil, creating
nature-based experiences for families. Over the years, thousands have joined in her trips.
Today, Nehal believes children may forget digital devices (电子设备), but they will always remember
experiences. Nature, she feels, teaches perseverance (毅力), humility, and presence — lessons no classroom can
fully provide.
4. What does the underlined word “confined” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Limited. B. Protected. C. Ordinary. D. Satisfactory.
5. What inspired Nehal to start her first camping trip
A. Her professional media background. B. Her childhood interest in trekking.
C. Her concern over children’s city life. D. Her desire for personal adventure.
6. Why does the author mention Dev’s difficult climb
A. To compare children’s and adults’ abilities. B. To account for the risks of outdoor activities.
C. To prove the positive effect of nature on children. D. To emphasize the importance of early training.
7 What does the text mainly intend to tell us
A. Parenting styles are developing in cities. B. Nature plays a vital role in children’s growth.
C. Outdoor adventures strengthen family bonds. D. Organizing community events requires courage.

Writing is simple, but it moves the brain in a strong way. When we send a quick text or keep a small diary, we
let feelings out and then step back to look at them. This move — from too much feeling to clear thought — is a
basic form of resilience (心理韧性).
Resilience is often called a skill we can grow with hard work. Psychologists say it is the steps we take to face
trouble, while news stories cheer people who win against pain by never giving up. The wellness trade also tells us
that always trying to be better will give us this power. Yet these loud ideas may miss the quiet help we get from
simple acts like writing.
Studies show that writing helps us deal with hard moments. In the 1980s, doctor James Pennebaker gave the
world expressive writing, a way that asks people to write about upset events. When we put pain into words, we
drop some of the weight inside and build a small safe place. Writing lets the brain treat sad memories.
This power comes from how the brain does its job. Writing asks us to bring back memories, line up thoughts,
and turn them into clear words. These steps light up parts that hold memory, make choices, and move the hand.
Because of this, writing helps short-term memories lock in place, so they feel steady (稳定的) and easy to find later.
This joining lets us look at the past in a new way and calm our feelings.
Brain imaging studies also show that writing down feelings quiets the amygdala (杏仁核),the spot that fires
up fear, and wakes the prefrontal cortex (大脑皮层), the spot that plans and solves. Even a small job like writing a
to-do list can bring back focus by using these same brain parts.
Writing also helps us find sense in life. It is not just a tool to talk to others; it is a way to think that builds who
we are. While loud tales often paint resilience as rare and great, daily writing acts — from a warm message to a
sticky note prove that we build the resilience in quiet, common steps of fitting in and moving on.
8. What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A. How writing helps us grow.
B. A common meaning of resilience.
C. The limit of popular views on resilience.
D. The media’s praise for determined individuals.
第 8页/共 24页
9. How does expressive writing help people
A. By furthering constant self-improvement.
B. By encouraging people to avoid difficulties.
C. By removing painful memories completely.
D. By making stressful events easier to handle.
10. What is the function of writing in terms of brain processes
A. It changes short memories into steady ones.
B. prevents the amygdala from being activated.
C. I values emotional feelings over logical thinking.
D. It separates decision-making from movement control.
11. What does the author stress about resilience in the last paragraph
A. It depends on professional methods.
B. It is a quality for overcoming difficulties.
C. It is mainly built through personal stories.
D. It can be developed in common daily practices.

In the foothills of Rishikesh, near the Ganga River, a small housing project shows how traditional building
methods can meet modern ideas of sustainable (可持续的) living. Known as Tiny Farm Fort, the house was built
by two brothers, Raghav and Ansh Kumar, who left city life in Delhi in search of a slower and more
environmentally responsible lifestyle.
Instead of following conventional construction practices, the brothers chose cob as their primary building
material. Cob is a mixture of sand, clay, straw and water, and has been used for centuries in different parts of the
world. Supported by a stone masonry base (石 砌 基 础 ) and eucalyptus wood beams (桉 木 梁 ), the structure
combines traditional techniques with practical design.
The building process itself was highly cooperative. More than 90 volunteers from 18 countries joined the
project through an online platform that connects hosts with people interested in sustainable construction. These
volunteers contributed labor while learning hands-on skills related to natural building. According to the builders,
the participation of international volunteers was not carefully planned but developed naturally through shared
interest.
One key advantage of cob construction lies in its environmental performance. The house features mud walls
measuring about 18 inches thick, which act as natural insulation (隔热). This helps maintain indoor temperatures
by keeping the interior cool during hot summer months. In addition, airflow from the nearby river improves
ventilation, reducing the need for artificial cooling. Skylights are used to bring daylight indoors, further lowering
energy consumption.
Beyond efficiency, the house also reflects the builders’ emphasis on craftsmanship. Handmade furniture,
sculpted wall surfaces and locally sourced materials contribute to the building’s character. While such details may
appear decorative, they also reflect a broader design philosophy that values durability, local resources and human
involvement.
Tiny Farm Fort illustrates how small-scale housing can combine sustainability, community participation and
traditional knowledge. Rather than presenting resilience or innovation as dramatic achievements, the project shows
how practical choices and ordinary actions can lead to long-term environmental and social benefits.
12. Why did the two brothers choose cob as their building material
A. To reduce construction costs significantly.
B. To follow a globally popular modern trend.
C. To achieve an environmentally responsible goal.
D. To attract international volunteers for the project.
13. What is mainly discussed about the volunteers in paragraph 3
A. Their role in developing the project online.
B. The planned cultural exchange they brought.
C. The careful selection process they underwent.
D. Their voluntary involvement driven by interest.
14. How do the mud walls and river airflow contribute to the house
A. They create a unique decorative style.
B. They increase energy efficiency naturally.
C. They prove the use of advanced technology.
D. They replace the need for modern buildings.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Cob Community and a Green Life
B. A Guide to Building with Natural Materials
C. Why Cob is the Future of Green Architecture
D. City Escape: Brothers Build Their Dream Home

Brian was a funny student who loved watching comedies best and hoped to become a comedy actor one day.
He often made his classmates laugh with jokes during breaks, and even his teachers would laugh at his funny
remarks in class.
When Brian heard about the school’s upcoming talent show, he immediately decided to participate — though
he’d never acted on stage before, the thought of sharing laughter with the whole school filled him with excitement.
However, some classmates doubted in public. “You On stage You’re not funny.” Ken, a boy, said to him. “No
one will like your terrible performance. You will embarrass yourself.” another classmate shouted, making Brian’s
cheeks burn with embarrassment.
Confused by their words. Brian seriously considered giving up. But then, he recalled how his close friends had
always begged him to tell more jokes during lunch breaks, and his drama teacher had once praised his natural sense
of humor. He decided to ignore the doubters and focus on preparing the best performance he could. He spent every
evening practicing his lines, practicing his gestures, and even asking his little sister to be his audience.
On the day of the show, Brian stepped onto the stage with a deep breath. His performance — filled with
funny stories about school life and exaggerated (夸张的) expressions — had the audience laughing loudly. When
the results were announced, he won first prize! His friends cheered loudly, and his teachers patted him proudly on
the back. Even so, Ken told Brian that he was not funny at all, and that he would not be successful. Brian didn’t
understand why Ken said so, but he realized that it had nothing to do with himself. He confidently continued to
work toward his goal.

10. What is the function of writing in terms of brain processes
A. It changes short memories into steady ones.
B. prevents the amygdala from being activated.

The experience in the talent show became a turning point for Brian. Instead of letting Ken’s words discourage
him, he used them as fuel to work even harder. He joined the school drama club, where he started performing in
short plays. His popularity grew, and soon he was invited to perform at local youth events. Whenever he felt
nervous before a performance, he would recall the laughter from that talent show and the pride of winning first
prize. Brian always made sure to prepare diligently, and with each performance, he gained more confidence and
improved his skills.
Years later, Brian’s efforts paid off. He became a well-known comedy actor. One day, he happened to meet
Ken, who was now working as an event organizer. Ken finally admitted, “I was wrong back then. I wanted to be on
stage too, but I was afraid of failing. I was just jealous.” Brian smiled and replied, “Thank you. Your criticism
actually helped me grow stronger.” He realized that staying true to oneself and working hard is the real key to
success.
