Passage 1((2023·
Terri Bolton is a dab hand when it comes to DIY (do-it-yourself). Skilled at putting up shelves and piecing together furniture, she never pays someone else to do a job she can do herself.
She credits these skills to her late grandfather and builder Derek Lloyd. From the age of six, Terri, now 26, accompanied Derek to work during her school holidays. A day’s work was rewarded with 5 in pocket money. She says: “I’m sure I wasn’t much of a help to start with, painting the rooms and putting down the flooring throughout the house. It took weeks and it was backbreaking work, but I know he was proud of my skills.”
Terri, who now rents a house with friends in Wandsworth, South West London, says DIY also saves her from losing any deposit when a tenancy (租期) comes to an end. She adds: “I’ve moved house many times and I always like to personalise my room and put up pictures, so, it’s been useful to know how to cover up holes and repaint a room to avoid any charges when I’ve moved out.”
With millions of people likely to take on DIY projects over that coming weeks, new research shows that more than half of people are planning to make the most of the long, warm summer days to get jobs done. The average spend per project will be around 823. Two thirds of people aim to improve their comfort while at home. Two fifths wish to increase the value of their house. Though DIY has traditionally been seen as a male hobby, the research shows it is women now leading the charge.
1.Which is closest in meaning to “a dab hand” in paragraph 1
A.An artist. B.A winner. C.A specialist. D.A pioneer.

C.To support her DIY projects. D.To encourage her to take up a hobby.
3.How did Terri avoid losing the deposit on the house she rented
A.By making it look like before. B.By furnishing it herself.
C.By splitting the rent with a roommate. D.By cancelling the rental agreement.
4.What trend in DIY does the research show
A.It is becoming more costly. B.It is getting more time-consuming.
C.It is turning into a seasonal industry. D.It is gaining popularity among females.
Passage 2(2024·
“Growing fruit trees is a very simple way to stay in love with our world,” says Vivian Keh, playwright and daughter of immigrants, holding a basket of persimmons (柿子) she’s cultivated to feel connected to her Korean ancestors. Keh is just one of the 50 remarkable subjects in naturalist writer Amy Stewart’s The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession, a collection of portraits of people transformed by their love of trees.
Initially, trees struck Stewart as an odd thing to collect. Intrigued by this community of enthusiasts, she discovered educators, preservationists and visionaries, all drawn to a kind of curation, motivated by reasons diverse as their projects. They plant trees in public and private spaces both modest and expansive, nurturing (培育) their collections to honor beloved dead, attract wildlife, preserve rare species’ connect to history, invest in the future, grow food and create beauty.
Steward categorizes these tree collectors according to their sense of purpose. Kenneth Hoegh, one of the book’s “ecologists”, tests which cold-loving species might grow in a warming and historically treeless Greenland. “Healer” Joe Hamilton plants loblolly pines on a parcel of land he got from his enslaved ancestors with an eye toward long-term sustainable forestry which he hopes will establish a source of generational wealth for his family. Reagan Wytsalucy has a plan to restore traditional peach orchards on Navajo land as one of the “community builders” who seek to bring people together.
Adding to the book’s charm are Stewart’s watercolor’ illustrations — she gives Us a look at each of her human subjects while also cataloging the most wonderful qualities of featured trees, such as Seussian eucalyptus seed pods and delicate camellia blossoms.
After spending time in this varied commonwealth, you’ll undoubtedly experience an intense desire to rest under the shade of a leafy oak. But something even deeper is happening here: by creating a space for people to talk about something they love. “How often do any of us get a chance to pour our hearts out to a stranger ” she writes. “Somehow, talking about trees made it possible.”
5.What does the underlined word “curation” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Connection. B.Collection. C.Treatment. D.Transformation,
6.What purpose of planting trees is mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To preserve rare species. B.To honor beloved dead.
C.To develop new varieties. D.To strengthen social bonds.
7.What does the quote in the last paragraph suggest about discussing trees
A.It inspires new ideas. B.It rarely happens in public.
C.It allows deep emotional sharing. D.It helps resolve environmental issues.
8.What does the writer think of the book
A.Complicated. B.Conventional. C.Inspiring. D.Intense.
I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old .It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source(来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.
I always read ,using different voices ,as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it !It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books .
Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.
As a novelist, I’ve found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can’t afford to purchase a book. I see libraries as a safe haven(避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and 1 think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can.
9.Which word best describes the author’s relationship with books as a child

C.Support libraries. D.Purchase her novels.

C.Library: A Haven for the Young D.My Love of the Library

Passage 1(2026
In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift . On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I put the spent film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it would come out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.
I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.
The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I've taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
13.What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy
A.Inspiring and practical. B.Tiring yet delightful.
C.Exciting and worthwhile. D.Difficult yet engaging.
14.Why did the author stop taking photos according to paragraph 2
A.He wanted to focus on his work. B.He was struck by sudden sorrow.
C.He attempted to behave like an adult. D.He was faced with increasing pressure.
15.What did the author get from picking up his hobby
A.More fun in the daily routine. B.New journeys in the wild.
C.Better skills of observation. D.Different styles of photography.
16.What is the best title for the text
A.Revisiting Lost Childhood Memories B.Appreciating Beauty Behind the Lens
C.Escaping Teenage Sadness with Camera D.Regaining Pleasure Through Photography
Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There’s a welcome familiarity - but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.
There are three books I reread annually .The first, which I take to reading every spring is Emest Hemningway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的),an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortazar.
While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifs, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it’s you that have to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.
17.Why does the author like rereading
A.It evaluates the writer-reader relationship.
B.It’s a window to a whole new world.
C.It’s a substitute for drinking with a friend.
D.It extends the understanding of oneself.
18.What do we know about the book A Moveable Feast
A.It’s a brief account of a trip.
B.It’s about Hemingway’s life as a young man.
C.It’s a record of a historic event.
D.It’s about Hemingway’s friends in Paris.
19.What does the underlined word “currency” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.Debt B.Reward. C.Allowance. D.Face value.
20.What can we infer about the author from the text
A.He loves poetry. B.He’s an editor.
C.He’s very ambitious. D.He teaches reading.
Passage 3(2025·
“I feel like I just came back from Egypt!” reported my friend after her experience at the Horizon of Khufu Exhibition at Phoenix Center in Beijing.
“It’s even better than my in-person visit to the country,” another friend cut in.
After hearing all their crazy talks, I decided that I had to see it for myself. Being no stranger to VR gaming experiences, I believe I can be more objective than my VR-virgin friends who were so impressed by this exhibition. My verdict It’s definitely worth a visit.
This traveling exhibition has already been in London, Montreal, and Atlanta before coming to Beijing. So rest assured that language is not an issue, since visitors can choose from English, Chinese, and French for the whole thing.
The 45-minute VR experience requires visitors to wear a VR headset that is among the most comfortable ones I’ve worn — not slipping or shifting, no matter how hard I moved around.
The tour begins with a tent in Egypt at night, with an enthusiastic guide bringing me on an after-dark VIP tour of the Great Pyramid of Giza. That sounds innocent enough to start and gives me time to get used to moving around the space without walking into the walls, which appeared as red barriers in my headset. Then about the time when I start getting comfortable, things get interesting when the lights go out and the goddess Bast shows up as a huge floating cat… It is really amazing. You should definitely experience it yourself!
The Horizon of Khufu Exhibition is currently running until Aug 25 at Phoenix Center, 3 Chaoyang Park Nanlu. Tickets are RMB 238 on weekdays, and RMB 298 on weekends. Children shorter than 1.1 m are not allowed to enter. Visitors can buy their tickets at the door or online on popular ticketing platforms like Dianping by searching “Hufu Skyline-Pyramid Chenjin Shitansuo Tiyanzhan”.
21.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “verdict” in paragraph 3
A.Conclusion. B.Evidence. C.Experience. D.Problem.
22.What did the author think of the VR headset
A.It was unsafe. B.It was satisfying.
C.It was too tight. D.It was expensive.
23.What can be learned about the exhibit
A.A lot of pictures are on display. B.Tickets have to be booked online.
C.Kids below 1.1 m are not allowed in. D.It will come to China on Aug 25.
24.Where is the text most probably taken from
A.An advertisement. B.A product description.
C.A tourist guidebook. D.A post on social media.

根据文章第一段画线短语下文“Skilled at putting up shelves and piecing together furniture, she never pays someone else to do a job she can do herself. C项“A specialist (一位专业人员)”最接近画线短语“a dab hand”的意思。故选C。
根据文章第二段“She credits these skills to her late grandfather and builder Derek Lloyd. From the age of six, Terri, now 26, accompanied Derek to work during her school holidays. A day’s work was rewarded with 5 in pocket money. 一天的工作得到了5英镑零花钱的奖励)”以及“It took weeks and is was backbreaking work, but I know he was proud of my skills.
根据文章第三段“So, it’s been useful to know how to cover up holes and repaint a room to avoid any charges when I’ve moved out. 故选A。
通过文章最后一段“the research shows it is women now leading the charge (研究表明,现在是女性主导了这项运动)”可知,研究表明,DIY将在女性中越来越受欢迎。

The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession,该书描绘了50位因对树木的热爱而改变的人物。
由文章第二段“Initially, trees struck Stewart as an odd thing to collect. Intrigued by this community of enthusiasts, she discovered educators, preservationists and visionaries, all drawn to a kind of curation, motivated by reasons diverse as their projects.(起初,斯图尔特觉得收集树木很奇怪。
由文章第三段“‘Healer’ Joe Hamilton plants loblolly pines on a parcel of land he got from his enslaved ancestors with an eye toward long-term sustainable forestry which he hopes will establish a source of generational wealth for his family. Reagan Wytsalucy has a plan to restore traditional peach orchards on Navajo land as one of the ‘community builders’ who seek to bring people together.(‘治疗师’乔·汉密尔顿在他从被奴役的祖先那里获得的一块土地上种植火炬松,着眼于长期可持续的林业,他希望这将为他的家庭建立一代人的财富来源。
由文章最后一段“‘How often do any of us get a chance to pour our hearts out to a stranger ’ she writes. ‘’Somehow, talking about trees made it possible.’(她写道:‘我们中有多少人有机会向陌生人倾诉心声?
由文章最后一段“After spending time in this varied commonwealth, you’ll undoubtedly experience an intense desire to rest under the shade of a leafy oak. But something even deeper is happening here: by creating a space for people to talk about something they love.

I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties. I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.(我一直是一个热情的读者,孩提时,有时候每天读多达三本书。
As I grew older and became a mother可知,我长大了成了一位母亲,结合下文I had several children and books were our main source (来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them(我有几个孩子,书是我们娱乐的主要来源。
I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can.( 我认为所有的作家都应该在他们可以的时候以有意义的方式支持图书馆。

根据文章第一段中“I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
根据第二段中的“The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner.
根据文章第三段中的“Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me. 和第四段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight. 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.

根据第一段最后两句“But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.(但是书没变,人变了。那就是使重新阅读行为如此丰富和富于变化之处)”和第二段“The beauty of rereading lies in that our bond with the work is based on our present register. It is true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings.(重新阅读的美妙之处在于我们与作品的联系是基于我们现在的心理状态。
根据倒数第二段“Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris.”及“an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time”可知,这本书出版于1964年,这是他关于20世纪20年代在巴黎的经典回忆录,是他老年时对那些野心勃勃却更简单的日子的回顾。
根据最后一段中“while money is indeed wonderful and necessary,(虽然金钱确实是美妙而必要的)”可知,前后句为转折关系,根据上下文的语境可推知,“rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them.”
根据倒数第二段“The third book is Julio Cortázar’s Save Twilight: selected poems, because poetry.(第三本书是胡里奥·科塔扎的《拯救暮光之城: 诗歌精选》,因为诗歌)”可知,作者是由于喜欢诗歌而喜欢这本书。故选A项。

根据画线词的上文“After hearing all their crazy talks, I decided that I had to see it for myself. Being no stranger to VR gaming experiences, I believe I can be more objective than my VR-virgin friends who were so impressed by this exhibition. 故选A项。
根据第五段“The 45-minute VR experience requires visitors to wear a VR headset that is among the most comfortable ones I’ve worn — not slipping or shifting, no matter how hard I moved around.
根据最后一段中“Children shorter than 1.1 m are not allowed to enter.
