Last spring, our school organized a tree-planting event at a nearby barren hill. To be honest, when I first signed up, I thought it would just be a simple, fun day out. I imagined us digging a small hole, dropping a seedling in, and we’d be done. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The reality was much tougher. The sun was beating down, and the soil was hard and rocky. My hands were sore from digging, and sweat poured down my face. For a moment, I felt like giving up. The task seemed daunting. But then I looked around. Everyone was working just as hard. My classmates were encouraging each other, sharing water, and working in teams to break through the tough ground. Our teacher, Mr. Li, whose shirt was wet with sweat, was right there with us, showing us the proper way to plant the seedlings to ensure they would survive.
We worked for hours, and by the end of the day, we had planted over two hundred saplings (树苗). Looking at the rows of tiny trees standing proudly on the once-empty hillside, I felt a sense of accomplishment I had never experienced before. It was a feeling far greater than winning a video game or getting a high score in a test.
That day, I learned that making a real difference requires effort and teamwork. It’s not about one grand action, but about many small, consistent efforts. We were more than just planting a tree; we planted hope for a greener future. And more importantly, the experience planted a seed of responsibility in my own heart. I understood that we are all caretakers of our planet, and every small act counts.
4. What did the author think of the tree-planting event at first
A. He felt it was a waste of time.
B. He was excited about the task.
C. He thought the task would be easy.
D. He was worried about the hot weather.
5. What does the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Discouraging. B. Rewarding. C. Amusing. D. Interesting.
6. What did the author gain from the tree-planting experience
A. Skills in teamwork and leadership.
B. An appreciation for the beauty of nature.
C. The chance to win an award from the school.
D. A sense of responsibility and accomplishment.
7. What message does the author mainly want to convey
A. Teamwork can make any difficult task easier.
B. Planting trees is important for the environment.
C. Challenges can be overcome through effort and teamwork.
D. Outdoor activities are more valuable than classroom learning.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. C

Blues (布鲁斯音乐) has been rated as the most popular music, in a study carried out by the University of York — a research project that aimed to address a common frustration in daily communication: the stress and impatience people often feel when waiting on the phone.
Researchers watched 2,540 people in a fake phone line so they could see how different sounds make callers feel. Each listener was exposed to one of ten audio experiences, with blues coming out on top ahead of heavy metal, country and pop. Music psychologist Dr Mimi O’Neill said the findings showed that different audio experiences could even influence how long people felt they had been on the phone. “The blues is featured by gentle feelings so you sink into it and in the enjoyment of the experience,” she said. “Metal is fast and can make you more stressed.” The team checked heart rate, mood and alertness to see what calms or worries people.
Dr O’Neill said the quality of the music was also key. “We’re really familiar with that broken, compressed (压缩的) music sound when we’re on hold, and if you have something that’s a bit better than that, it’s going to improve the experience.” She also said that instead of playing songs, they tried short quiz questions and general knowledge, and people liked that best. “But there is a small problem: If you do not wait long enough and you miss the answer, it can make you feel more upset,” she added.
8. Why did the University of York do the music research
A. To advertise blues in phone services. B. To compare music’s psychological effects.
C. To solve people’s annoyance while on hold. D. To prove high-quality music is more popular.
9. What makes blues stand out as hold music
A. Fast pace keeping callers alert. B. Soft feature helping callers enjoy waiting.
C. Popularity in real phone services worldwide. D. Ability to make callers forget why they call.
10. What might upset callers about the quiz
A. Missing the answer. B. Too much noise. C. Slow music. D. Long questions.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. How to write blues songs. B. The history of hold music.
C. Why people hate phone queues. D. A study on the sound for waiting on the phone.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D

Despite a 30-year warming trend, the last three years in the Bering Sea have been the coldest on record. A scientist of University of Alaska Fairbanks(UAF) says that the cold temperatures have helped produce larger zooplankton (浮游动物) in the Bering Sea, which may be changing the way Walleye pollock (狭鳕) are feeding.
Alexei Pinchuk, a researcher at the UAF Seward Marine Center, has spent the last three years gathering zooplankton samples (样本) in the Bering Sea. He and his coworkers have been looking at how changes in temperature in the Bering Sea affect the zooplankton, and in turn how the zooplankton may affect the diet of Walleye pollock.
During colder years, like the last three, pollock tend to eat the larger zooplankton, like copepods and krill, which grow well in lower temperatures. Pinchuk has also found that the recent cold temperatures have brought an arctic “sand-flea”, the amphipod Themisto libellula, south into Bering Sea waters. Young pollock seem to prefer to eat these amphipods over other, smaller ones of zooplankton.
In warmer years, which include the record-setting high temperatures of 2001 to 2005, smaller zooplankton tend to grow better. According to Pinchuk and his coworkers, younger pollock tend to eat the smaller plankton, while larger pollock favor the larger plankton found in colder waters. This causes younger pollock to start out doing well in warmer temperatures, but as the pollock grow bigger, they may not be able to find the larger zooplankton they need to produce enough fat for overwintering.
“The larger pollock may then eat their smaller cousins instead,” said Pinchuk. Although the last few years have been cold, scientists believe that the warming trend in the Bering Sea will continue.
Pinchuk’s findings were recently published in the journal Nature on November 4th. His work is part of the broad Bering Sea Project, a six-year, $52 million ecosystem study of the Bering Sea. The Bering Sea Project is supported by both the National Science Foundation and the North Pacific Research Board.
12. How do cold temperatures affect zooplankton in the Bering Sea
A. They change the colors of zooplankton.
B. They reduce the numbers of zooplankton.
C. They slow the movement of zooplankton.
D. They benefit the growth of zooplankton.
13. What is probably a challenge for young pollock in warmer years
A. They need to travel long distances for food.
B. They may meet more enemies.
C. They may struggle to survive.
D. They have to compete with larger pollock.
14. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph
A. Summarize previous studies.
B. Add some background information.
C. Provide some advice for fishermen.
D. Describe the direction of further study.
15. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A science magazine. B. An educational blog.
C. A fishing guide. D. A geography textbook.

A Warm Friendship
Liu Li was excited to meet the new exchange student who was going to join her class. At the start of the school year, a tall, nervous-looking boy stood awkwardly at the front of Liu Li’s classroom, his hands tightly grasping his backpack. Mr Chen, their head teacher, introduced him as James, a 15-year-old boy who had just moved to China from Canada with his parents. James knew only a few simple words of Chinese, and when he tried to greet the class in broken Chinese with a thick foreign accent, many students smiled softly. Embarrassed, James’ face turned bright red and he stared down at his sneakers, too shy to lift his head.
Seeing this, Liu Li felt really bad for him. During the lunch break, she spotted James sitting all alone in the corner of the cafeteria, slowly picking at his food without any appetite (食欲). Gathering all her courage, Liu Li walked over and sat down next to him, giving him a friendly smile and saying“Hello”. James looked up in surprise, but his eyes lit up with relief to finally have someone to talk to. Using simple, basic English, Liu Li introduced herself. Though her English was not fluent and she made a few small mistakes, James smiled widely and responded eagerly. They ended up chatting happily for the entire lunch period, talking about their favorite hobbies and school subjects.
After that day, the two quickly became good friends. Liu Li helped James practice Chinese every day, and even invited him to her home to experience a warm Chinese family dinner with dumplings and braised pork. In return, James patiently helped Liu Li with her English pronunciation and shared fascinating stories about his life in Canada, from skiing in winter to exploring maple forests in autumn. As weeks passed, James grew more and more confident in class. He even volunteered to teach the whole class a lively English song, and often joked that Liu Li was his very first and best Chinese friend.

【答案】
One month later, the school organized a talent show. Liu Li encouraged James to participate, and they decided to perform a cross-language song together — James sang in English and Liu Li in Chinese, blending their voices perfectly. On the show day, James was a little nervous at first, but when he saw Liu Li’s encouraging smile from the side stage, he calmed down. Their performance won loud applause from the audience. After the show, many classmates came over to praise them and invited James to join their activity groups.
From that moment, James truly felt at home. He no longer felt like an outsider but a part of the class and the school. He and Liu Li still helped each other with their studies, and their friendship grew deeper day by day. Whenever James talked about his life in China, he always said proudly, “I’m lucky to meet Liu Li. She made me love this country more.” This warm friendship became a precious memory for both of them, bridging the distance between two different cultures.
