High-intensity yoga for less than 30 minutes, twice a week, may be the best workout routine for catching high-quality shut-eye, a new study shows.
While exercise in general is known to improve sleep, a meta-analysis (元分析) published on July 11 in Sleep and Biological Rhythms presents a broad comparison of exercise routines and their influence on sleep quality. By indirectly comparing 30 trials from about a dozen countries, researchers at Harbin Sport University in China ranked how well different exercise methods influence sleep. Yoga won out, followed by walking, resistance training and aerobic exercise. The team argues that yoga improves sleep because the controlled breathing exercises associated with it activate the parasympathetic nervous system (副交感神经系统), lowering heart rate and promoting relaxation.
The most surprising finding is that shorter sessions, less than 30 minutes, are better, even though previous studies found that longer sessions — up to 60 minutes — help with hitting the pillow. The researchers guess that longer sessions might increase levels of the “stress hormone” cortisol (皮质醇), keeping people wide awake.
Assessing how widely applicable high-intensity yoga is to everyone is difficult because the meta-analysis compared trials involving different age-groups. “Some kinds of interventions may work well for someone who is in their 30s but be more difficult for someone who is in their 80s,” says Arsenio Páez, a sleep researcher at Concordia University in Montreal. To confidently determine which exercise plan is best for sleep, scientists will need to build on this meta-analysis by directly contrasting exercise plans. This could involve a controlled trial where participants are carefully chosen based on factors such as sex and fitness history.
For now, experts recommend that people exercise according to their preference and practicality, as exercise seems to benefit sleep and health in general. Even if yoga isn’t an option, walking or other light exercise is far better than doing nothing for both sleep and overall health.
24.How does yoga help improve sleep
A.By raising cortisol levels.
B.By changing the training style.
C.By increasing workout frequency.
D.By making a certain nervous system active.
25.What will scientists do to further the study
A.Turn to another meta-analysis. B.Select participants randomly.
C.Confirm the effect of sex on fitness. D.Compare exercise plans directly.
26.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph
A.To offer advice on exercise. B.To summarize sport types.
C.To stress the benefits of being healthy. D.To share workout experience.
27.What may be the best title for the passage
A.Yoga Relieves Back Pain B.Yoga Boosts Sleep Quality
C.Yoga Enhances Well-being D.Yoga Regulates Daily Routines
Ahmed Muhammad, an 18-year-old high school student from California, realized how difficult it can be for some kids to engage in science. He discovered this when taking care of his younger cousins. One day, he asked them whether they wanted to do a science experiment, but their response was disappointing.
“Every time I take care of them, we usually play chess, play video games, or watch TV. But when I tried to get them to do science experiments, they said, ‘No, I hate science. I’m not good at it,’” Muhammad recalled. This moment inspired him to create a non-profit organization called “Kits Cubed”, which was intended to expose kids to science in a fun, affordable and accessible way.
“I went back to my room, pulled out some science books, and started researching online. I came up with a few science experiments that could be done at home using everyday, inexpensive materials, and the kids loved them,” Muhammad said.
Seeing how happy his cousins were, he realized that other kids could benefit from the same experience. “I noticed that schools often lacked science experiments, and I thought kids needed access to science kits,” Muhammad explained.
He then took $200 he had saved up to create a website and started producing science kits for sale, with the profit donated to children in need. “I had enough money to build the website and make about 10–15 kits. Initially, my objective was just to see my cousins happy. I wanted to share that joy with more kids,” Muhammad said.
Today, Muhammad has been accepted into Stanford University, and he is proud to have changed his cousins’ view on science while inspiring other kids.
28.What inspired Muhammad to create “Kits Cubed”
A.His cousins’ lack of interest in science.
B.His passion for doing science experiments.
C.His inability to get along well with his cousins.
D.His desire to help schools with science resources.
29.Why did Muhammad produce science kits at the beginning
A.To donate them to schools. B.To make his cousins happy.
C.To run his website smoothly. D.To promote scientific research.
30.Which of the following words can best describe Muhammad
A.Optimistic. B.Creative. C.Accessible. D.Modest.
31.Which can be the best title for this passage
A.“Kits Cubed” Helps Kids in Need B.Science Experiments Matter to Kids
C.Science Kits Bring Happiness to Kids D.Teen Inspires Kids’ Curiosity in Science
Education experts at the University of South Australia remind teachers that high engagement leads to high returns when it comes to improving student performance.
Filming and assessing the content of classrooms across South Australia and Victoria, researchers found in a new study that nearly 70% of student tasks involved superficial learning — simple questions and answers, taking notes, or listening to teachers — rather than activities that engage students on a deeper level. Less than a third of teachers are engaging students in complex learning, limiting student opportunities for critical thinking and problem solving.
Dr. Stephenson, a researcher at UniSA, emphasizes that teachers need more support in designing interactive and meaningful lessons that promote deep learning. “The greater the engagement, the deeper the learning. Deep learning helps organize knowledge into conceptual frameworks, enhancing memory and learning outcomes. It also develops innovative thinking. Even small adjustments to lesson plans and teaching techniques can significantly boost student engagement and overall performance,” he explains.
At a base level, teachers should consider how they can adjust their existing classroom activities so that more tasks are on the deeper end of learning. For instance, watching a video can be done in various ways: students can watch it passively, take notes using the speaker’s words (active engagement), write questions based on the video’s content (constructive engagement), or watch and discuss the video in a group to generate new ideas (interactive engagement). “Interactive learning motivates students to engage more deeply by making judgments, discussing ideas, and cooperating on solutions,” Dr. Stephenson says.
Interestingly, many teachers seem not to know or fully appreciate the importance of how their lesson tasks can stimulate (激发) different modes of student engagement. “Even changing class activities from ‘active’ to ‘constructive’ can go a long way towards improving student leaning,” Dr. Stephenson says. “Teachers should undertake professional development to transform their thinking towards practices that support deeper-learning and better outcomes for students.”
32.What does the underlined word “superficial” probably mean in paragraph 2
A.Interactive. B.Devoted. C.Shallow. D.Accurate.
33.What do education experts advise teachers to do
A.Frequently assess student outcomes.
B.Involve students in active learning.
C.Increase the use of videos in class.
D.Promote students’ planning skills.
34.What can be learned about current class activities
A.They prevent students from distraction.
B.They help develop students’ team spirit.
C.They make for students’ deep thinking.
D.They are in urgent need of transformation.
35.Which activity can improve student performance best
A.Viewing videos. B.Class debates.
C.Reading competitions. D.Retelling exercises.
Life can sometimes feel like a never-ending hustle (忙碌). From chasing work deadlines, attending family events to dealing with unexpected problems, it’s easy to lose track of time. 36 . But here’s the good news: you don’t need to spend hours every day to keep those friendships strong. With some effort and creativity, you can nurture those relationships even in the busiest of seasons.
Small gestures, big impact
Friendship doesn’t always require grand gestures. 37 . Sharing a funny TikTok video or calling to gist for five minutes can remind your friends that they’re on your mind. These brief but thoughtful moments go a long way in keeping your connection alive, even if you can’t meet physically.
38
Treat your hangouts like an important meeting or event. Plan ahead and mark dates on your calendar for a lunch date, a coffee meetup, or even a video call. When you set aside time for your friends, you create something to look forward to while also making them feel valued.
Talk about your busy schedule
Honesty is key in friendships. If your plate is full, don’t ghost your friends — just let them know what’s going on. A simple, “This week is mad busy, but I’ll reach out soon,” can ease their mind. Good friends will understand and appreciate your openness. 39
Mix friendship with your daily hustle
40 . For instance, invite a friend to join you at the gym, run errands (跑腿) together, or catch up over a cooking session on a video call. This way, you spend quality time together without disrupting your schedule. It’s the perfect two-in-one combo.
A.Lock it down on your calendar
B.Make your friends a top priority
C.It’s often the little things that count
D.This way, nobody feels ignored or unimportant
E.Looking for a friend who enjoys the same daily interests as you
F.Sometimes, your regular activities can double as friendship time
G.And before you know it, your once-close friendships start to feel distant

Jack and his younger sister, Lily, were as different as night and day. Jack was the adventurous type, always running around with his friends, playing football or exploring the woods. Lily, on the other hand, was quieter, preferring to spend her time with her books and her dolls. However, she was quite thoughtful and always looked out for the whole family. She often helped her parents with housework, made her mom a cup of tea when she was tired, and kept an eye on her brother, Jack.
Jack had a group of close friends. They would seldom include Lily in their games — not because they disliked her, but because they thought she was too young and too different to join their adventures. This made Lily feel left out and sad, as she desired to be a part of her brother’s world.
One strange thing about Jack was that whenever he was upset, the next day he would find a single coin in his pocket. It puzzled him. He couldn’t explain where they came from. Whenever he asked his parents about it, they just smiled.
One day, Jack’s best friend moved away to another city. Jack was sad. He had spent countless hours with him, and the thought of not having him around was heartbreaking. That evening, when he came home, he was in no mood to be around anyone, not even Lily. She tried to comfort him, but in his sadness, Jack shouted at her, and his sharp words sent Lily running to her room in tears. Feeling sorry but still upset, Jack went to his room, leaving Lily to cry alone.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 开头已给出。

66. My Favorite Park
Located in the center of my city, Green Lake Park covers about 10 hectares with a small lake, lush trees, and colorful flower beds.
I love this park because it’s a perfect mix of nature and peace. Every morning, I jog along the lake while listening to birds singing. The clean air and friendly atmosphere always make me feel relaxed.
In my opinion, Green Lake Park is more than just a park — it not only beautifies the city but also provides a wonderful place for people to connect with nature and enjoy simple happiness.

The next morning, as Jack got dressed, he felt something in his pocket. He reached in and pulled out a coin, just like before. But this time, he was determined to solve the mystery. He remembered his outburst at Lily the previous day and felt a pang of guilt. As he held the coin, an idea struck him. Maybe Lily knew something about these coins. He decided to ask her.
Knowing the truth from his parents, Jack believed he should do something. He went straight to Lily’s room, looking a bit ashamed. “Lily,” he said softly, “I’m so sorry for shouting at you. And I know now that you’ve been leaving these coins for me when I’m sad.” Lily looked up, surprised. Jack continued, “You’re so kind, and I was wrong to leave you out. From now on, you’re part of my gang. We’ll play together, and I’ll always look out for you, just like you do for me.” A big smile spread across Lily’s face. From that day on, Jack made sure Lily was included in all his activities, and the two siblings became closer than ever.
