A daring adventure through space
The highest honor in children's literature, the Newbery Medal, went to A Wrinkle in Time in 1963. Madeleine L'Engle's work pushed the boundaries① of what children's books could be.
An artistic author
Madeleine L'Engle was born in 1918 in New York City. Growing up, she played the piano, acted in plays, and loved to read. When she ran out of books at home, she began writing her own stories. [1]L'Engle won a poetry contest in fifth grade, whereas② when she submitted③ poems and stories to publishers, she received so many rejections that she nearly gave up writing.Fortunately, she kept trying.
Creating a classic
After reading a book about Albert Einstein,L'Engle was inspired to invent a world based on scientific theories.[2]She wrote A Wrinkle in Time in three months, basing the main character④,Meg Murry,on her childhood self. With her brother and friend,Meg seeks to find her missing scientist father. To create the novel, L'Engle had to do research on physics theories and included ideas she found interesting. At the time, some people thought the science fiction was too advanced for children to read. At least 26 publishers rejected it.Finally, the first copies were printed in 1962.
The story continues
L'Engle wrote more than 60 books in her lifetime. She followed A Wrinkle in Time with four more novels about the Murry family: A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, and An Acceptable Time —known together as the Time Quintet. The first book remained the most successful and has been turned into two movies, a play, an opera, and a graphic novel⑤. In October 2022, it was declared that A Wrinkle in Time would be adapted into a Broadway musical⑥.

All-powerful robots and artificial intelligence (AI) have long been the subjects of science fiction (小说).Now such technology means that fact is more strange than fiction.A science fiction story,The Land of Machine Memories, recently received a literary award.
It tells of a relationship between a human and AI.Li Xiao, the hero,is an explorer in the meta-verse (元宇宙) but she works as an engineer in the real world. In an experiment that has gone wrong, she loses all of her memories about her family. To recover them, she steps out onto a journey to explore the land of machine memories with her AI friend Neura.Li eventually regains her memories, gaining a deeper understanding and experience of the universe.
The novel was compiled using AI by Shen Yang,a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the Tsinghua University in Beijing. The story was awarded second prize at the fifth youth popular science and science fiction competition, organized by the Jiangsu Popular Science Writers Association in Nanjing,Jiangsu Province.
Fu Changyi, director of the Science Fiction Committee of the Jiangsu Popular Science Writers Association, said he was aware of Shen's long-term involvement in AI research,so he invited Shen to take part in the competition.Fu kept the fact that The Land of Machine Memories was generated by AI from the judges. He wanted to see if judges could realize what they were reading was the product of a machine.
For Fu,the outcome came as a surprise.Only one judge found out the story was produced by AI.Three out of the six judges voted for The Land of Machine Memories.By competition rules, works recommended by five judges can win a special prize, and works recommended by three judges can win a second prize.
One of the judges who were impressed by the AI story was Wang Yanzhong,a science fiction novelist.“At first I didn't realize that it was created by AI.There's no doubt that AI does better than many humans in terms of richness of pared with the works of beginners,it's outstanding,” he said.

Praised writer Jessica Khoury was only four years old when she began to write.Today, she has printed several books for young people, including The Mystwick School of Musicraft Series,The Corpus Trilogy, and The Forbidden Wish. Her latest novel is called The Ruby Code.
I recently spoke with Khoury about her new science fiction for middle-graders.The book, she told me from her home in South Carolina,is for anybody who has ever thought,“What would it be like for a video game world to come to life?”
Set in a future New York City, the book is,in Khoury's words,“a high-action scary book.” Readers are introduced to 13-year-old Ash,a silent young gamer. His life circles around his love for virtual (虚拟的) reality games. They offer a chance to stay away from his bad stepfather and the cold-hearted people who laugh at him.
Ash's life takes an unexpected turn when he is given a small metal box after helping a man in need.It contains an old-style video game called “The Glass Realm”.To his surprise,Ash meets a character named Ruby who was created by artificial intelligence (AI).Her abilities are so huge that she can even rewrite the game.
Ruby's secret knowledge leads Ash on a painful but exciting adventure. At last,he is able to learn the truth behind a dishonest company.
In The Ruby Code,Khoury seeks the advantages and disadvantages of rapid technological progress.Like many people, she wonders how AI will change life.
“As a writer,” Khoury said,“I think all the time about how long it will be before the robots take my job.But I'm not a person who's scared of technology.I like to consider not just the worst-case situation but also the best-case situation.”

Some Chinese Sci-Fi History
2 Few works were translated. And the Western world had little to no taste for it.
The history of Chinese sci-fi is extensive, but the modern genre first took root during the 1900s.Authors such as Lu Xun promoted sci-fi's early development in China and translated multiple Western stories like Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon.Following the 1970s,China began its own golden age of science fiction.Movies, clubs, magazines, societies and communities formed around this genre and became increasingly popular among Chinese readers. 3-
Its Entry into the West
Chinese sci-fi has become internationally recognized, mainly because of Ken Liu,who translated The Three-Body Problem, the first contemporary Chinese sci-fi novel to be translated into English. 4 Chinese sci-fi's introduction into the West began with this novel, and it couldn't have been given a better international debut (亮相).Liu has become a go-to source for Chinese authors seeking international audiences.
