Overall objective of the unit
SS will be able to understand and apply basic vocabulary and sentence structures related to weather. Through dialogue practice, ss can fluently express feelings about different weather conditions and activities and learn how to choose appropriate activities and protective measures under different weather conditions to cultivate life skills. Ss can recognize the pronunciation of ar [a:], er [ :], ir [ ], or [ :] [ :], ur [ :], as well as the vocabulary containing these phoneme to establish phoneme awareness. Ss will know the rules of stressed words in the sentence. Ss will master the basic usage of the present continuous tense, able to not only correctly identify and describe ongoing weather changes and activities, but also use the present continuous tense to describe activities under different weather condition. Ss can understand and describe different natural landscapes and cultural activities in China and around the world, especially Mount Huangshan. Through writing exercises such as speaking with pictures and writing travelogues, ss will cultivate imagination and creative expression skills. By sharing and discussing, ss can learn to appreciate others' experiences to cultivate critical thinking. Through group collaboration, ss can collect and organize weather information about a specific city on a certain day, describe the activities of the city and its residents with vocabulary and sentence patterns they have learnt to describe in detail what happened at each location and time period.
Analysis of the teaching material
【What】 The conversation is about phone communication between two friends called Bill and Anna. In the conversation, Anna shared her vacation experience in Sanya, especially the sunny beach, sunbathing, and playing beach volleyball with her brother John. She also mentioned the hot and sunny weather conditions in the area (about 28 ℃). Bill described the cold and snowy weather in Stockholm (-3 ℃) and their activity of building snowmen outside. Both of them asked about the activities of each other's family members and expressed their willingness to visit each other in the future. 【Why】 The purpose of this lesson is to enable students to learn and master vocabulary and expressions related to travel, weather conditions, daily activities, invitations, and responses in a real context through a phone conversation that is close to their interests and travel experiences. At the same time, through the dialogue content, students will be guided to understand the care and sharing among friends, enhance their social awareness and emotional communication skills. In addition, by comparing the different weather and activities in the two places, it can also enhance students' cross-cultural awareness and geographical knowledge, as well as their understanding and respect for different lifestyles. 【How】 Many commonly used vocabulary and phrases in travel and weather descriptions were used in the conversation, such as "holiday", "beach", "sunbathing", "beach volleyball", "hot and sunny", "cold and snowy", etc, which helps students learn to apply these expressions in practical communication. In the dialogue, declarative sentences, interrogative sentences, and exclamatory sentences are used. Declarative sentences are used to share personal experiences and feelings. Interrogative sentences are used to ask about the other person's situation, and while exclamatory sentences are used to express surprise or admiration. These various language structures makes the dialogue more vivid and interesting, helping students understand and master the usage of different sentence structures in communication.
