Do you know that cigarette butts (烟头) are the most common rubbish in our life People throw about 4.5 trillion (万亿) of them into the environment every year. Cigarette butts can kill fish, and they are in the stomachs of sea turtles, birds and other wildlife. A survey showed that though cigarette butts were everywhere, people paid no attention (注意) to them because they were so small.
Dutch company TechTics planned to help solve the problem of cigarette butts with its BeachBot(BB). It is a beach-cleaning robot. It uses AI to find cigarette butts on the beach. Even part of the butt in the sand can be found. BB has four wheels, two cameras and two arms to pick up cigarette butts. The way this robot works is very simple. Once it finds cigarette butts, BB just needs to put them into a bin. After it finishes cleaning, people will deal with the waste. However, BB still can’t tell the difference between a cigarette butt and a small seashell. We can use the APP Microsoft Trove to help it. Anyone with a smart phone can send BB photos of cigarette butts to help the robot learn to know them. BB is able to pick up 20 cigarette butts successfully in 30 minutes now. Though the robot works well without wasting time, scientists still hope that people can litter less. If people stop throwing their cigarette butts onto the beach, robots like BB will not be necessary.

On June 20, 2024, Tianjin hosted the World Intelligence Expo. And there was a special worker, Xiaoqi. She stood in the hall and got ready to answer a lot of questions. She is friendly, smart and helpful.
But here’s the surprise—Xiaoqi is not a real person. She is a humanoid robot. Humanoid robots can show feelings on their faces and make emotional connections with humans, so they are called emotional interaction (情感互动) robots. Now, these robots are mostly used in museums and schools. Some people guess that in the next five years, humanoid robots could help with all kinds of housework.
At the Expo, many companies showed robots that could walk fast, dance, and even make coffee. Some people noticed Walker X, a robot that is 130cm tall. Walker X can say hello, shake hands, do Tai Chi, and make heart shapes with its hands.
People think differently about humanoid robots. During the Expo, someone even had an interaction with Xiaoqi. Nicole Yandun, a visitor at the Expo, said, “She is smart and lifelike. It is surprising that she can speak English. Lifelike robots can make our life and work easier in the future.” However, Zeng Qiao,a student in Tianjin, said, “It’s scary. Her overall look makes me uncomfortable, and her answers are not very intelligent.” Zeng said, “I also care about the safety of humanoid robots.”
Facing these ideas, Xiaoqi replied, “My job is to help people, not to take their place.”
