“The British Schindler”: the life of Nicholas Winton
It is August 1939, and a group of frightened children are boarding a
train① at Prague’s Wilson Station.Their heartbroken②parents do not join
them.Indeed, they fear they may never see their children again.But they
know that their children will live.[1]These are among the 669 children,
most of them Jewish, that Nicholas Winton will go on to save from death

Nicholas Winton was born on 19 May 1909 in London, to German-

During World War Ⅱ, Winton served as an officer in Britain’s
Royal Air Force.He left the military in 1954.He then worked for
international charities and for various companies.For the most part,
he did not mention the children he saved, and his actions soon
disappeared from people’s memories .

Jordyn Perez was about to turn 8 years old when her mom suggested a
new way to celebrate her birthday. “What would you think about

For the littlest patients, gifts might include building blocks or toy trains.
“And for the teenagers, my age or older,” Jordyn says, “it might
be music player or books.”
Natalie Gutierrez works in the public relations office at Baptist
Children’s Hospital. She has seen first-hand the effect of Jordyn’s gift-
giving. “She puts smiles on the faces of these little patients in our
hospital and on our nurses and staff,” Gutierrez says. Jordyn’s efforts

When 19-year-old Emily Bhatnagar from Maryland, USA, found
out her father had stage four thyroid (甲状腺) cancer, her response
was a little different than you might expect. To honour her father, who
she also describes as her best friend, she decided to start a book drive
called For Love and Buttercup, collecting books for kids with cancer.
“It was very much an overnight idea,” she explains. “I posted a
message on an app called Nextdoor asking my neighbours for used book
donations. I was only expecting a few here and there, but the response
was truly incredible, and it was just the push I needed to co-exist with my
grief rather than letting it consume me.”
“It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch my dad go through cancer

Erin Alexander, who was suffering from the loss of her relative,
was having a hard day. However, her day took an unexpected turn when
she picked up her order and noticed a message on the cup:
“Madam,” the waitress had written next to a heart, “your heart is
golden.” The small and unexpected act moved her deeply, brightening

New research confirms the great influence of experiences like Ms
Alexander’s. Researchers found people who perform an unplanned act of
kindness tend to undervalue how much the receiver will appreciate it. This
could hold many of us back from doing nice things for others more often.
In a recent experiment, 84 participants (参与者) were given a
hot chocolate on two cold weekends at a park and were told they could
keep it or give it to a stranger. The 75 participants who gave away their
drink were asked to guess how “big” their kind act would feel to the
receiver on a scale (等级) from 0 to 10, and how the receiver would
rate their feelings upon receiving it. The receivers were then asked to
report how they actually felt using the same scale.
It turned out that the people doing the kind thing always undervalued
the importance of their actions. While they thought they were offering
something small, the receivers considered it more meaningful because

Despite longing for kindness, many people feel awkward at the
thought of being kind. The “little inner voice” often leads them to
question whether their behavior might be misunderstood or whether it will
make the receiver feel pressured to pay it back.
But an act of kindness is unlikely to have unintended results; it can
lead to even more kindness. If you are not already in the habit of
performing unplanned kind acts, start by thinking about what you are

W:A group of 17-year-old schoolboys decided to break the world

study. The team coated the roofs, walls, and roads in Singapore and
found that by comparison with an uncoated area, the coated environment
was up to two degrees Celsius cooler in the afternoon, with people heat
comfort level improving by up to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Lead author Dr Kumar Donthu, who completed the work as a
research fellow at Energy Research Institute, said, “Our study
provides evidence that cool paint coatings reduce heat build-up and cool
the urban environment. This is a small solution for cooling that has an
immediate effect, compared to other choices. Moreover, by reducing
the amount of heat absorbed in buildings, we also reduce indoor air-

23 years ago, but he’s still cutting hair.
He offers free haircuts to locals on Tuesday mornings — with a
