Ⅰ.阅读理解

The Night Watch was commissioned (委托) around 1639 by Frans Banninck Cocq, the captain of Amsterdam’s civil militia (民兵组织), and described him and his 17 members. It was completed in 1642 by Rembrandt van Rijn and spent more than 70 years in the hall of the civil militia.
In 1715, Dutch officials decided to move the painting to the city hall in Amsterdam’s Royal Palace on the Dam. The almost 12-foot by 14-foot artwork couldn’t go through the doors, so the movers made a decision and cut off the edges of the painting. The missing parts were never recovered. However, art historians have been aware of the missing items thanks to a smaller copy of the original scene painted by Dutch artist Gerrit Lundens.
In 2019, officials of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, where the painting has been displayed since 1808, decided to recreate the missing parts. To help them with the restoration (修复), the team, led by the museum’s senior scientist, Robert Erdmann, turned to a new AI algorithm (算法). Called Convolutional Neural Networks, it helps computers figure out what images may have once looked like. The scientists scanned high-resolution images of the original (原作) and Ludens’ painting to the computer. The AI was able to study and correct the painting’s perspective. It also recognized the exact colours used by the Dutch master and could even copy his brushstrokes.
The “missing” parts were printed and mounted to the painting. The left side included two men watching the event and a young boy running away from the militia. A drummer and a barking dog were added to the painting’s right side.
The AI helped the museum reproduce the best possible version of the missing pieces. But Taco Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum, thinks that the original missing parts are still around and will be returned to the museum some day. The restored painting will be on show and it can also be seen online on the museum’s website.

Every year in May, museums prepare shows to honor Leonardo da Vinci, who died in France on 2 May 1519. He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are Mona Lisa and the Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting, Landscape 8P which they think is da Vinci’s earliest-known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images, not one. One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to 5 August 1473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old. It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back, perhaps because it was wiped off. Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this “mirror-writing”. It’s a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells about an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said, “Leonardo was born left-handed, but was taught to write with his right hand from a very young age. By looking at his writings, including from this drawing, we can see his right-handed handwriting is educated and well done.”
Experts compared the two handwriting samples and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape 8P from its number in an art list. It will be part of an exhibit at Italy’s Uffizi Gallery. The museum director, Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo’s drawing techniques and his abilities in writing.
5.Which of the following mentioned in the text has been studied by researchers recently?( )
A.Mona Lisa. B.Last Supper.
C.Landscape 8P. D.Mirror-writing.
6.What does the writing on the back probably tell about?( )
A.A statement about the painting. B.An introduction about Leonardo.
C.Something about the city of Florence. D.An agreement to produce a painting.
7.What can we learn about da Vinci from Cecilia’s words?( )
A.He could write with either of his hands.
B.He did bad in right-handed handwriting.
C.He wasn’t good at writing with his right hand.
D.He taught himself to write with right hand.
8.What’s Eike Schmidt’s attitude towards the research?( )
A.Unclear. B.Positive.
C.Doubtful. D.Cold.

During a dark period in his youth, Bill Murray was wandering the streets of Chicago, feeling extremely sad and hopeless. “I was no longer excited about anything in life,” the actor recalled. That day he decided to visit the Art Institute and found himself in front of Jules Breton’s 1884 painting The Song of the Lark (云雀), which shows a young woman looking skyward, sickle (镰刀) in hand, a bright orange sunrise behind her. Suddenly, Murray felt he had a promising future. “I just thought, well, the girl doesn’t have many chances of success, but the lark’s flying high up in the sky and the sun’s coming up anyway and she’s got another chance at it,” he said. “That gave me some sort of feeling that I’d get another chance every day the sun comes up.” Murray credits the painting with changing his life forever.
Though making art has long been regarded as a form of treatment through self-expression, recently, passive participation — looking at art — is now being regarded as a different way of improving mental health. “We know that for a lot of people, making art can be a useful way to treat a mental illness,” says Tim A Shaw, artist and co-founder of the arts and mental health charity Hospital Rooms. “But doing some painting or drawing isn’t usually an easy, relaxing thing for those who suffer from a high level of mental stress; it’s an uncomfortable pleasure.”
A few months ago, doctors at one of Brussels’s largest hospitals partnered with — and began advising patients to make visits to — the city’s fine arts museums. “We’re in the middle of a crisis that has brought so much stress to people, and I think culture may be the answer,” says government official Delphine Houba. The World Health Organization, in 2019, also published a 146-page report that recommends the inclusion of arts in the treatment of mental health. In the UK, Hospital Rooms has been changing dozens of wards (病房) by painting their walls and filling them with artworks by artists like Nick Knight and Gavin Turk.
9.What can we learn about the woman in Jules Breton’s painting?( )
A.She is working at sunset.
B.She is lowering her head.
C.She is standing in a room.
D.She is listening to birdsong.
10.In what way did the painting change Murray’s life?( )
A.It gave him renewed hope.
B.It excited his interest in art.
C.It made him decide to be a great actor.
D.It inspired him to visit art museums.
11.How does Tim A Shaw look at making art?( )

It was Miss Pratt who brought a lot of confidence to me. From that moment on, I made the decision to be one of the top students in my class to improve myself. Whatever it took and no matter how much time I would spend, I would try my best to succeed.
About two months later, the final exam result was announced and I got the first place. The moment Miss Pratt finished the announcement, the whole class cheered and clapped for me. For the first time I felt truly good about myself and I knew I had been motivated by Miss Pratt’s praise. This might not have occurred if I had not heard those kind words. Thank you so much, Miss Pratt! What a great difference you have made! I am determined to be a caring teacher like you!

What is the place of art in a culture of inattention? Recent visitors to the Louvre report that tourists can now spend only a minute in front of the Mona Lisa before being asked to move on. Much of that time, for some of them, is spent taking photographs not even of the painting but of themselves with the painting in the background.
One view is that we have made tourism and gallery-going so easy that we have made it effectively impossible to appreciate what we’ve travelled to see. In this society, experience becomes goods like any other. There are queues to climb Everest as well as to see famous paintings. Thus, leisure is considered as hard labour rather than relaxation.
In the rapidly developing society, what gets lost is the quality of looking. Consider an extreme example, the late philosopher Richard Wollheim. When he visited the Louvre he could spend as much as four hours sitting before a painting. The first hour, he claimed, was necessary for incorrect impression to be removed. It was only then that the picture would begin to disclose itself. This seems unthinkable today, but it is still possible to organise. Even in the busiest museums there are many rooms and many pictures worth hours of contemplation (沉思) which the crowds largely ignore.
Marcel Proust, another lover of the Louvre, wrote: “It is only through art that we can escape from ourselves and know how another person sees a universe which is not the same as our own and whose landscapes would otherwise have remained as unknown as any there may be on the moon.” If any art remains worth seeing, it must lead us to such escapes. But a minute in front of a painting in a hurried, harried (烦扰) crowd won’t do that.

Mona Lisa is the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting of a woman with a mysterious smile. This week, the painting gave up a secret.
Scientists using X-rays to examine the chemical structure of a small part of the painting discovered a technique Leonardo used in the work. An oil paint used for it was a special, new chemical mixture, which suggests that the Italian artist was in an experimental mood when he worked on the painting in the 16th century.
“He loved to experiment, and each of his paintings is completely different technically,”said Victor Gonzalez, a chemist who has studied the chemical element of several works by Leonardo and other artists. The researchers found a rare lead compound (铅化合物) — plumbonacrite, in Leonardo’s first layer of paint. The discovery proved that da Vinci most likely used lead oxide to thicken and help dry his paint. The paint in the study is about the thickness of a human hair, lying in the top right area of the painting.
The scientists looked into its atomic structure using X-rays, moving particles at the speed of light, permitting researchers to look deeper into the paint structure. “ Plumbonacrite is really a fingerprint of his recipe, as it’s the first time we can chemically confirm it,” Gonzalez said.
Dutch artist Rembrandt may have used a similar mixture when he was painting in the 17th century. Gonzalez and other researchers have found plumbonacrite in his work, too. Leonardo is thought to have put lead oxide powder, which has an orange colour, in the oil to make it thicker and dry faster. “What you will get is an oil that has a very nice golden colour,” Gonzalez said. “It flows more like honey.”
But Mona Lisa — said by the Louvre to be a portrait (肖像) of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine silk businessman — and additional works by Leonardo still have other secrets to tell. “What we are saying is just a little brick in the knowledge,” Gonzalez said.
9.What’s the new discovery about Mona Lisa?( )

B.A new chemical element used in the painting.
C.The secret of the woman in the painting.
D.The structure of the paint da Vinci used.

A.Open secret. B.Widespread use.
C.Hidden element. D.Long-term dream.

A.It helps to make many things into paints.
B.It helps to make paints easy to deal with.
C.It helps to keep the paintings last long.
D.It helps to make paintings rich in colour.

Jamie Wardley is a special kind of artist — an ice sculptor. He first trained as a sand sculptor. Later,he learned about ice sculpture. Now he does sand sculpture in summer. And in winter, he sculpts ice.
When sculpting ice, Wardley has to work in cold temperatures. If the weather is cold enough, he can work outside. But winter in the United Kingdom is not always very cold. So often he works in a large freezer where the temperature is about -12℃.
Wardley enjoys sculpting ice outside in winter. When he sculpts in the open air, people can watch. They can be part of the creative process.
Wardley makes ice sculpting sound simple. But the tools Wardley uses are sharp and dangerous. And the ice is very heavy. Each block of ice weighs 120 kilos. And some larger sculptures are made of several combined blocks of ice. Sometimes ice sculptures can be as big as buildings. In Kemi, Finland there is an ice hotel called the Snow Castle. Each year, Wardley helps build the Snow Castle.
Inside the Snow Castle, the temperature is -50℃. Even the dining tables are made of ice. So you have to wear winter clothes when eating and wear a hat when sleeping. “The ice hotel is built every year in January. Then it melts in April. Each year we rebuild it and create a new design,” Wardley said.
The Snow Castle is a large and amazing work of ice, but Wardley’s smaller ice sculptures are special too. One winter, in the city of Bradford, the UK, Wardley created several small sculptures. He used the sculptures to tell a story which contained an important message about goodwill and understanding.
Ice sculptures are temporary works of art. When the temperature rises, they will melt. But that does not mean that their beauty is lost. The sculptures from that day in Bradford have now melted away, but their message of goodwill, understanding and acceptance remains.

Finger painting is an art that most people have experienced in childhood. But there are still people who know little about this art form. Finger painting is a simple activity that involves dipping fingers in paints and then using fingers to create objects and shapes on a piece of paper. All you need is a table at elbow height, a few sheets of plain paper, and a few bottles of watercolour.
When engaging kids in this activity, one should use non-toxic (无毒的) paints only. If not available in the market readily, non-toxic paints can be made at home easily. Preferably, the paints should also be eatable. Finger paints come in bright colours and can be purchased relatively inexpensively. Adults can save money by making their own finger paints using a mixture of cornstarch, food colouring and water.
It is a common fallacy that finger painting is for children alone, rather it’s an activity that can be enjoyed by adults in equal measure. Adults can use rubber gloves while painting to avoid dirty marks of paints on their hands. When a group of people are gathered for an exercise of finger painting, it can be a great way of creating a bond between the group. Art and painting parties are a popular concept in the West. Organizations can also use finger painting as a team-building activity by making participants paint together on a large canvas (画布).
There’s no limit to the expression of feelings in finger painting. All one needs to do is go all out and put all their feelings on a piece of paper by dipping their fingers in paints. While painting, one may unconsciously choose colours that reflect their emotions. For example, you may choose the colour red to express your anger or green to express hope. At times you may be confused, and the painting will help you describe your confused state of mind. Once you get your emotions on paper, you are likely to feel relieved.
So what are you waiting for? Plan a finger-painting session soon, and experience the joy.
5.What can we know about finger painting?( )

Huang Gongwang was a famous Chinese artist in the Yuan Dynasty. He was good at music, poetry, writing and especially painting.

The kind man was impressed by the boy’s talent. Later Huang began to learn painting under the guidance of Zhao Mengfu.
Between the ages of 50 and 62, Huang often travelled in nature. During the long-term travelling, he developed an interest in rivers and mountains. When living in Songjiang, Huang often watched and enjoyed the fantastic scenery there. Sometimes he sat in the mountains all day, even forgetting to eat and have a rest. While enjoying the beauty of nature, he got lots of good ideas about what to paint.

Scarlett did not eat regularly when she was three years old. At the time, her parents thought she was just a picky eater, but after a blood test and some other tests, they learned she had a rare heart condition.
“I was shocked. I always thought it was her stomach, but the result was beyond our imagination,” her mom, Shanna Tabron, says. “It was really tough to understand and let it sink in. The heart is the engine to your body, and it was heart-broken to hear it.”
In the following 5 years, Scarlett was in and out of the hospital while she waited for a new heart, before receiving a transplant in 2019. Since then, Scarlett said she’s been “feeling better”. And she is a cute and active girl and has found great joy through dancing, which she finds both fun and challenging. This year, when the doctor told Scarlett’s parents that they should not worry about Scarlett’s heart any more, the family even held a dance party for the lucky and brave girl.
Out of all the dancers in the world, Scarlett’s biggest inspiration is the amazing Rockettes. “They are the best,” Scarlett says. “Even when I was sick and went through so many tests, I could felt the power and energy they gave me.” She always wished to see the Rockettes in person.
Through a partnership between Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and Make-A-Wish Metro New York, Scarlett and her family recently got to fly to New York City for an unforgettable weekend.
And when she found out that her dream of going to New York City to meet them was coming true, she was excited. “I’m really excited to go dancing with the Rockettes and watch their performance,” she said, after changing into a special dancing suit to show off her high kicks.
