Easy Chemistry Experiments to Do at Home
Not all science requires labs. You can explore the fun of science in your own kitchen. Here are some science experiments and projects you can do that use common kitchen chemicals.
Click through the images for a collection of easy kitchen science experiments.
  Mentos and diet soda fountain
Explore the science of bubbles and pressure using Mentos candies and a bottle of soda. As the candies dissolve in soda, the tiny pits formed on their surface allow carbon dioxide bubbles to grow. The process occurs quickly, producing a sudden burst of foam from the narrow neck of the bottle.
  Experiment materials: Mentos candies, soda.
Baking soda and vinegar volcano kitchen experiment
You can get a volcanic eruption using kitchen chemicals.
Experiment materials: baking soda, vinegar, water, food colouring.
Make water fireworks in a glass from water and dye (染料)
Don’t worry — there is no explosion or danger in this project! The “fireworks” take place in a glass of water.
Experiment materials: water, oil, food colouring.
Make hot ice using vinegar and baking soda
You can make “hot ice” at home using baking soda and vinegar. The reaction creates heat, so the ice is hot. It happens so quickly. You can form crystal towers as you pour the liquid into a dish.
  Experiment materials: vinegar, baking soda.
21.Which experiment needs sweets?( )

Joseph Frederick Engelberger, the Father of Robotics, was born on 26 July 1925. He received his degree in Electric Engineering in 1949 from Columbia University. He worked as an engineer in a company and then he met George Devol at a party in 1956, two years after Devol had designed and patented (获得专利权) an industrial robotic arm. However, the company where Engelberger worked was closed in the year he met Devol.
Finding himself jobless but with a business partner and an idea, Engelberger co-founded Unimation with Devol, creating the world’s first robotics company. Over the next two decades, the Japanese took the lead by investing heavily in robots to replace people performing certain tasks. In Japan, Engelberger was widely recognized as a key player in Japanese manufacturing quality and efficiency.
After observing his aging parents, Engelberger saw the robotics automation could be used in the medical field. In 1984, Engelberger introduced HelpMate and hoped to start a new industry for in-home robots. He sold his first HelpMate to Danbury Hospital in 1988. The medical robot was so successful that the hospital ended up purchasing another, and within a decade, well over 100 hospitals worldwide operated HelpMates.
Senator Joseph Lieberman delivered a speech in the US Senate in praise and recognition of the inventor, calling HelpMate an example that shows the federal investment in science and technology for patients can lead to new products that create jobs for Americans and make for a better quality of life.
Engelberger liked working. So even after he got into his 80s, he remained active in the promotion and development of robots for use in elder care.
24.What happened to Engelberger in 1956?( )
A.He got his college degree. B.He was unemployed.

26.What does Paragraph 3 talk about?( )
A.The origin of HelpMate. B.The promotion of HelpMate.
C.The function of HelpMate. D.The challenge in creating HelpMate.
27.What’s Lieberman’s attitude toward HelpMate?( )
A.Critical. B.Doubtful.
C.Objective. D.Favorable.

An American company has developed a new technique (技术) to make bread stay fresh for 60 days.
Scientists found that a kind of mould (霉菌) caused bread to go bad. The new technique kills the mould and keeps the food for longer time. This means there will be less waste of food in the world in future.
Food waste is a big problem in most developed countries. In the US, an average family throws away 40% of the food they buy, which adds up to $165bn every year, about 330 million tons in weight. Bread takes a larger part. In the UK, 32% of the bread they buy is thrown away as waste when they can still be eaten.
The bread usually goes mouldy in around 10 days, but the American company says the new technique will keep the bread free from mould for two months.
“We treated a piece of bread in a special machine. At 60 days it had the same amount of mould as it was first made,” says Mr Stull, the leader of the company.
Although there are a lot of bread makers interested in the new technique, few customers like the idea. They say they don’t think a piece of bread which lasts for 60 days tastes good.
“We’ll have to make our customers accept the idea. But it will take some time,” says Mr Stull.
28.What is the key point of the new technique?( )
A.It can prevent the world from wasting food.
B.It kills the mould and keeps bread fresh for longer time.
C.It keeps the same amount of mould.
D.It makes bread taste good.
29.How much of the bread is wasted in the UK?( )
A.Nearly half. B.A quarter.
C.More than half. D.About one-third.
30.What can we know from the passage?( )
A.Food waste can be reduced immediately with the new technique.
B.We will buy bread that can last longer.
C.Few customers are sure about the technique.
D.Poor countries are in great need of food.
31.What is mainly talked about in the passage?( )
A.A new technique has been invented to keep bread fresh longer.
B.There is great waste of food in developed countries.
C.There is a kind of mould that causes food to go bad.
D.Customers don’t like food that lasts for two months.

Many people think that the world is about to step into the fourth industrial revolution. This time, machines can do a lot of work in the charge of human beings, even better than human beings. In the future, the world can be more efficient, but unemployment will become more common.
It raises a troubling question for all of us — when will a machine be able to do my job? There are no certain answers, but some of the world’s top artificial intelligence (AI) researchers are trying to find out.
Katja Grace, a research associate at the University of Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute, and her colleagues have surveyed 352 scientists and compiled (汇编) their answers into predictions about how long it may take for machines to outperform humans on various tasks.
The good news is that many of us will probably be safe in our jobs for some time to come. The researchers predict there is a 50% chance that machines will be capable of taking over all human jobs in 120 years.
“One of the biggest surprises was the overall lateness of the predictions,” says Grace. “I have expected the amazing progress in machine learning in recent years, plus the fact that we were only talking to machine learning researchers, to make the estimates earlier.”
“I am a bit skeptical of some of the timelines given for tasks that involve physical manipulation (操作),” says Jeremy Wyatt, professor of robotics and AI at the University of Birmingham. “It is one thing doing it in the lab, and quite another having a robot that can do a job reliably in the real world better than a human.”
Manipulating physical objects in the real world, an environment that changes randomly, is a complex job for a machine.
Perhaps the hardest jobs for machines to perform are those that take years of training for humans to excel at.These often involve intuitive (凭直觉的) decision making and abstract thinking — things that computers have been struggling with.
The experts predict robots will not be taking over as surgeons (外科医生) until around 2053, while it could take 43 years before machines are competing with mathematicians for space in top academic journals.
32.According to the passage, how might the fourth industrial revolution impact the world?( )
A.The world will become more efficient.
B.Machines can do things better than humans.
C.Humans will not find jobs because of machines.
D.Machines can do things instead of human beings.
33.How did the researchers find out the answer?( )
A.By giving examples. B.By doing experiments.
C.By conducting surveys. D.By making comparisons.
34.According to Jeremy Wyatt, what makes certain tasks challenging for machines in the real world?( )
A.The real word is full of challenges.
B.Manipulating physical objects is complex.
C.Machines can do better than humans in labs.
D.The randomly changed environment is too difficult for computers.
35.What does the underlined word “skeptical” in Paragraph 6 mean?( )
A.Confused. B.Surprised.
C.Doubtful. D.Certain.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
  阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The twentieth century saw greater changes than any century before: changes for the better, changes for the worse; changes that brought a lot of benefits to human beings; changes that put man in danger. Many things caused the changes. 36.( )
Scientific research in physics and biology has vastly broadened our views. 37.( ) It also has brought us a better understanding of the nature of life and of its continuous development.Technology in the application of science has made big advances that have benefited us in nearly every part of life.
The continuation of such activities in the twenty-first century will result in even greater advantages to human beings: in pure science — a wider and deeper knowledge in all fields of learning; in applied science — a more reasonable sharing of material benefits, and better protection of the environment.
38.( ) The creativity of science has been employed in doing damage to mankind. The application of science and technology to the development and production of weapons of mass destruction has created a real danger to the continued existence of the human race on this planet. 39.( ) Although their actual use has so far occurred only in the Second World War, the number of nuclear weapons that were produced and made ready for use was so large that if the weapons had actually been used, the result could have been the ruin of the human race, as well as of many kinds of animals.
William Shakespeare said, “The web of our life is of a mingled yarn (纱线), good and ill together.” The above brief review of the application of only one part of human activities — science seems to prove what Shakespeare said. But does it have to be so? 40.( ) Are we biologically programmed for war?
A.What can we do to handle it?
B.Must the ill always go together with the good?
C.Sadly, however, there is another side to the picture.
D.We get a better understanding of the world around us.
E.We have seen this happen in the case of nuclear weapons.
F.However, in my opinion, the most important was the progress in science.
G.It has given us a deeper knowledge of the structure of matter and of the universe.

Tammy lives on the Little Acres Farm with her family. They have almost everything on the farm, but they don’t have many good pumpkins. For some reason, they never grow properly.
In October, they sell tickets to the farm, and create a maze (迷宫) made of hay bales (干草捆).They call this “The Haunted Maze”.However, people like to see pumpkins on Halloween, and always complain about the lack of pumpkins.
One morning, Tammy’s dad talked to her.
“The Shelby Farm is planning a Haunted Maze this year,” Dad said.
“Oh no!” said Tammy.“That means they’ll take away our business!”
“We need to see what they’re up to,” Dad said.“Tammy, can you do that?”
“Dad, I’ll give it a try,” she said.
Tammy felt like a spy (间谍) from Little Acres Farm.Early the next morning, she rode her bicycle and got to the Shelby Farm quickly.Mr Shelby was staring at piles of hay and looked confused.
“Hello, Tammy,” said Mr Shelby when he saw her.
“Hi, Mr Shelby,” said Tammy, suddenly not knowing what to say.
“Where are you going?” Mr Shelby asked her.
A shaky feeling rose in Tammy’s body. She started to breathe heavily out of fear. She said, “I was just passing by ...,” then paused, and said “Goodbye” suddenly and rode away. All the way, she thought she would be laughed at by her dad.She had an idea. She secretly picked one pumpkin from the Shelby Farm, put it in the basket on her bike, and made a detour (绕道) to avoid Mr Shelby.
Tammy was halfway home before she realized what she had done. She regretted doing this. When she got home, she told Dad everything.
“You stole a pumpkin?” he asked.“You were supposed to find out information about their Haunted Maze, and you just stole a pumpkin?” Dad was so angry.
Tammy said, “I’m sorry.I was afraid!” She really was afraid. She’d never stolen anything before in her entire life.

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Nobody expects a natural disaster to strike.Neither does anyone know the impact it can have on life. The following measures can save your life in an emergency.

Typhoon
Typhoons occur in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, particularly in exposed regions like the Caroline Islands, the Philippines, and Japan. The best place to hide during a typhoon is a secure basement or a bathroom with no windows.A must-have device is a battery-powered weather radio, through which you will hear evacuation orders or in other cases, instructions on how to survive in your shelter and learn about the weather situation.
  Flood
Floods occur more often than any other natural disaster and change the landscape dramatically. They are usually caused by intense rainfalls lasting for days.Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house.Once you hear the evacuation warning, leave for safer higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container.
  Avalanche

The world is lucky when our most brilliant minds choose to work for the common good.Young Ryan Honary is among one of the brilliant minds.
Shocked by the deaths in the 2018 Camp Fire, California’s frightening wildfire, Honary turned his attention to how to decrease future disasters. In 2019, Honary won a $10,000 prize in the Ignite Innovation Student Challenge for his early wildfire detection network, which provides app technology for firefighters. He was only in fifth grade at the time.
Turning 14 years old and going into the eighth grade this year, Honary is busy working in SensoRy AI, the company he set up.With the help of his father and a team of experts, the company has received a lot of attention.
Honary started creating websites when he was in third grade. He learned Python and JavaScript in a local after-school program. At the same time, he was interested in animals and the environment. He became worried as he saw how much the environment was under pressure.
When wildfires started ruining the air quality, destroying homes and killing some people, Honary thought about how AI can be used to solve environmental problems such as wildfires. In order to get data to train the machine learning models on his fire detectors, he collected real-world data from Google Earth about the Camp Fire of 2018 in California.Once a fire is detected by a fire detector, the information can be sent to the app he created. Also, machine learning can be used to predict where the fires are going.
Honary is hoping to attract more people from his generation to his company. He believes the environment is going to be a big responsibility for all of us.
24.What can be inferred from Paragraphs 2 and 3?( )
A.Honary’s detecting network was free.
B.Honary gained many awards in 2019.
C.Honary’s company is facing serious challenges.

25.Why did Honary invent the detector?( )
A.To make a fortune. B.To enlarge his company.
C.To save firefighters. D.To reduce wildfire disasters.
26.How did Honary train the machine learning models on detectors?( )
A.By creating websites.
B.By collecting data.
C.By taking an after-school program.
D.By sending information to the app.
27.Which of the following can best describe Honary?( )
A.Gifted and humorous. B.Curious and confident.
C.Creative and responsible. D.Friendly and intelligent.

The public nowadays has a misunderstanding of forest fires, believing that fires should be kept out of every type of forest. Many of us can recall Smoky the Bear’s famous warning:“Remember, only YOU can prevent forest fires.” However, that’s not always the case.Under the right conditions, and when conducted safely, fire can create many environmental benefits as well as help prevent larger, uncontrollable wildfires.
After a forest fire, many wildlife species will move into recently burned areas to feed on these newly available foods. Some reptiles and amphibians such as the snake prefer forests frequently burned by fire.As Herbert Stoddard put it,“One of the most harmful things modern man has done to birds has been his attempt to exclude fire from fire-type pine (松树) forests.Within a few years most forests choke up with bushes, lose their prairie-like vegetation (草原般植被) and can no longer support birds which depend on periodic burning for their food supply and proper cover.”
If you are asked to picture the forest floor, what do you see? Pine needles, cones, leaves, branches might come to mind — all sources of fuel.If these fuel sources build up without any type of removal, the “fuel load” can lead to fires which are huge disasters to forests and people alike. In contrast, prescribed fires can be used by forest professionals every couple of years to keep forest fuels at a proper and manageable level. They can also greatly reduce the spread of pest insects and disease and remove unwanted tree and plant species.Plus, they can create and maintain important wildlife habitats rich in grasses and promote the growth of trees, wildflowers and other various plants.
Many organizations work to promote fire on the landscape.Smoky the Bear even has an updated warning: “Only YOU can prevent wildfires,” as the Forest Service has over the last few decades developed policies and measures to include prescribed fire as a useful tool, as well as continuing their work to prevent and fight wildfires.
28.What can benefit birds according to Herbert Stoddard?( )
A.Forest bushes. B.Periodic burning.
C.Fuel sources. D.Pine forests.
29.What does the underlined word “prescribed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?( )
A.Frequent. B.Wild.
C.Planned. D.Damaging.
30.Why do forest professionals need to conduct fire every couple of years according to the passage?( )
A.To keep the forest in balance.
B.To keep the fuel rich in the forest.
C.To put out wildfires.
D.To remove tree and plant species.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?( )
A.To prevent the use of prescribed fire in the forest.
B.To promote the complete exclusion of fire from forests.
C.To educate people on positive aspects of controlled fires.
D.To encourage the public to remove sources of forest fuels.

A heatwave has hit many countries in Europe, pushing temperatures over 40℃.A heatwave is a long period of unusually hot weather. The heat is expected to continue until the end of July.
The Italian Island of Sardinia reached 46℃ on 18 July. The Italy government has asked people to dress in linen(a thin, light material) and to stay indoors between 10 am and 6 pm.The government has asked people to drink plenty of water but avoid alcohol, fizzy drinks and coffee, which can make you feel thirstier. In Rome, the country’s capital, people aged over 70 can go to swimming pools for free to help them keep cool.
Wildfires have broken out in many places. In Greece, which recorded 41℃ on 18 July, fires near the capital, Athens, have destroyed huge areas of forest and thousands of people have been moved to safety.Heatwaves can make fires worse because hot weather dries plants, which fuel the fires.
In the US, temperatures in Death Valley, California, hit 53℃ on 18 July, close to the hottest ever recorded on Earth. On 16 July, the US National Weather Service issued warnings in parts of the country, affecting more than 80 million people.
Despite the high temperatures in many European countries, the UK is not experiencing a heatwave. This is because a different weather pattern has brought rain and lower temperatures to the UK.
The heatwave in Europe is being caused by a weather pattern that has stopped the air from moving very much. That means the hot, dry weather has got stuck and temperatures have kept rising.Earth is also experiencing a natural climate pattern called El Nino(厄尔尼诺), which causes the water in the eastern Pacific Ocean to warm up more than usual. This can lead to hot weather around the world.Temperatures in some parts of Europe were expected to fall on 20 July.
32.What suggestion did the Italian government give to avoid high temperatures? ( )
A.Provide free swimming pools to keep young people cool.
B.Wear thick clothes to prevent the invasion of heat.
C.Drink enough amounts of coffee to keep the mind clear.
D.Don’t go outdoors during high temperature periods.
33.What do we know about the wildfires in Greece?( )
A.The fires were mainly caused by people.
B.The heatwaves fueled the spread of wildfires.
C.The fires had already killed a thousand people.
D.The entire forest has been destroyed into ruins.
34.What prevented the UK from experiencing the heatwaves of Europe?( )
A.Different weather patterns. B.Different geographic locations.
C.Global El Nino phenomenon. D.The effect of the Pacific Ocean.
35.What is the main idea of this passage?( )
A.The hottest city on record in the world has finally emerged.
B.The hot weather caused by heatwaves is coming to an end.
C.Heatwaves swept across Europe and America except the UK.
D.The El Nino phenomenon led to the global high temperatures.

An earthquake happens when two plates rub together. The Earth plates travel in different directions and at different speeds.36.( ) In other words, earthquakes are the shaking of the Earth’s surface caused by the Earth’s rocky outer layer. The energy stored within is suddenly released.
The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and when it is happening. If an unpopulated region is struck, there will be low loss of life or property.37.( ) Many of the areas at risk are largely populated now.Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage.
38.( ) Fortunately, however, most of them are unnoticed to the public because of the small Richter scale (震级).But large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, can cause millions of dollars in damage.
39.( ) In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua.Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the city was in such a mess that it didn’t have the money necessary to rebuild it.
The shaking of the Earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster.40.( ) In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep away everything in their path.
A.Actually, there are several million small earthquakes every year.
B.It is in the fires and floods that often the greatest damage occurs.
C.Throughout history, there are numerous destructive big earthquakes.
D.If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction.
E.So it is of great importance to predict the movements of the Earth plates.
F.If one plate is slowly forced under the other, pressure builds up until the plates break apart.
G.The destructive damage of an earthquake can continue for years after the first shake.

Caught in a flood
Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room.Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad.It was making her nervous. The wind roared, and the rain beat on the roof and windows.Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!”
“No,” said Dad.“It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary.“We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the car away!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside.
“Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time.“The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open.Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa.“Mary, don’t worry.Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do?

Three Books for a More Honest View of Parents
Nowadays, it seems there are two ways to write about parenthood. I am heartily sick of both. This year I’ve decided to hug books that are inspiring and honest, yet do not avoid the pleasures of parenthood.
Life Among the Savages Shirley Jackson price:$15
Shirley Jackson, author of one of the most amazingly sinister novels of all time and of the short story The Lottery, also wrote two charming novels about raising her four children in an old farmhouse in rural Vermont. In Life Among the Savages, Jackson’s humor is as thrilling as her horror, and her children seem never to inspire in her anything worse than fond exasperation (恼怒).
A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You Amy Bloom price:$13.95
A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You contains one of the most absolute expressions of a mother’s love in fiction. Much of it takes place in the waiting room of a gender-reassignment surgeon. It’s about a woman who is determined to be the mother that her child needs her to be. In this collection ordinary women rise to the occasion demanded by motherhood. They make mistakes but they generally succeed in making up for them.
  Family Man Calvin Trillin price:$18
In his memoir (回忆录) Family Man, Calvin Trillin writes with humor about his wife and daughters. He gives what I think is the single most useful piece of parenting advice “Getting advice on the best way to bring up children is like getting advice on the best way to breathe sooner or later you’re probably going to forget it and go back to your regular old in-and-out.” Trillin gives the impression of being the best kind of husband.

A.The Lottery. B.Family Man.
C.Life Among the Savages. D.A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You.
22.What is Calvin Trillin’s Family Man all about?( )
A.A humorous mother. B.An operation.
C.Offering advice. D.Being a kind husband.

When my daughter Sara was in the fifth grade, she came to me with a problem. “Marcy hates me!” she cried “Because Kathy is my friend, too. She wants me to be her friend and nobody else’s. You talk to Marcy. You tell her that I want to be her friend, but I can have other friends, too!”
Oh! I looked at her for a few moments, wondering how I got into this mess (困境), when suddenly an idea came to me.
Picking up two baskets from the living room, I explained, “When everyone is born, he or she has a little basket. This little one here is yours. The big one is mine. As you grow,so does the basket. You can see your little basket is inside mine because when you were born, there were too many things you couldn’t do for yourself. I did everything you couldn’t do on your own.”
  She nodded.
“Well, as you grew older and began to do some things on your own, I began placing a few more things in your basket. When you learned to tie your shoes, that went in your basket.”
She said softly, “I can tie my own shoes.”
“Right. As you grow older, there will be more and more things you must do on your own.” As I spoke, I gradually took her basket out of mine and handed it to her. “You will finally carry your own basket with things only you can do.”
She looked up at me and said, “I understand. There are some things that I have to do by myself because they are in my basket.”

B.Sara wouldn’t make friends with Kathy.
C.Sara was too young to deal with anything.
D.Sara managed to persuade her mother to help her.

Young adults often have a lot to learn in school. However, occasionally, the life skills needed for them to become successful outside of school aren’t learned. This may be why the years after high school can sometimes be the most uneasy and tense times for young adults.
Some may say that life skills are to be taught by their parents rather than school, but that’s not exactly true. Some students don’t have a parent figure to teach them the necessary knowledge needed. As a result, they rely on school to provide them with those. This is why related courses should be set up in high schools.
Over the course of history, students generally go to an educational institution of some sort to find themselves spending their entire time learning math and science, instead of what is required for real world — communication, which is through behaviors and manners. Manners are important when having a conversation with family, friends, teachers perhaps or even employers.High schools should find a way to teach manners as a way for students to have respect and be open-minded when it comes to other individuals.
In addition, how to deal with finances is one of the major life skills for students. For people, especially young people, to live in today’s financial environment, knowledge of personal finance is a must. For example, schools educating students about building credit scores and keeping up with a credit card is helpful. However, educational institutions do not spend a good amount of time talking about the topic of money managing: paying taxes, mortgage, bills, insurance, etc. It is time to extend financial knowledge by making personal finance a required course at high schools and universities.
With the essential instructions of communication and financial management provided to the young adults, they will be more successful in their future lives.
28.What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph 2 refer to?( )
A.Life skills. B.Parent figures.
C.Subject courses. D.Adult experiences.
29.What does the author advise schools to teach students?( )
A.Skills of making money. B.The communication ability.
C.The history of their country. D.Ways to study math and science.
30.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?( )
A.It is easy to survive in today’s financial environment.
B.Most of the students don’t need to build credit scores.
C.Students are lacking in instructions of financial management.
D.Educational institutions spend much time on money managing.
31.What is the best title for the text?( )

Who needs friends? According to most psychologists, we all do, especially nowadays when so many other aspects of modern life are changing. It seems that having friends keeps us both healthy and happy.
The number of TV series about groups of friends shows just how important friendship is to us. Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families, for advice and comfort. One woman named Rebecca she interviewed even told her that if she had got to choose between her husband and her friend, she would choose her friend.
Since our friends mean so much to us, it is not surprising that the happiest marriages are also friendships. “Once the romantic stage of a relationship has passed, it is friendship that holds people together,” says Rowe. “If the couple do not make some changes, they will either get tired of each other and break up or stay together and look for friendship with others.”
For men, friendship is usually based on doing things together rather than the private conversations that are typical of women friends. Men share time and activities like building a business or playing football together, but they don’t often share their feelings. Although many women find their relationship with a husband or boyfriend is not enough, many men say that their partner is their best friend. Even women who are very happily married are likely to become very unhappy without a close friend and can even find the break-up of a close friendship as painful as the end of a marriage.
Lasting friendships can provide a lot of the same support that families provided in the past, but the perfect situation is to have your family there for you as well. Friendships and family relationships can both change, but a friend will not consider you when making really important decisions in the same way that a family member will.

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you remember the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock: she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Nearing the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath.

At that time, her mother came back and touched her hair gently, which called her mind back.

In 1970, psychologist Walter Mischel famously placed a cookie in front of each of a group of children and gave them a choice: they could eat the cookie immediately, or they could wait until he returned and then be rewarded with a second. If they didn’t wait, however, they’d be allowed to eat only the first one.Not surprisingly, once he left the room, many children ate their cookies almost immediately.A few, though, resisted eating the first cookie long enough to receive the second.Mischel termed these children high-delay children.
Interestingly, the children who were best able to delay gratification (满足) later did better in school and had fewer behavioural problems than the children who could only resist eating the cookie for a few minutes — and, further, ended up on average with SAT scores that were 210 points higher. As adults, the high-delay children completed college at higher rates than the other children and then went on to earn higher incomes. In contrast, the children who had the most trouble delaying gratification had higher rates of incarceration (监禁) as adults and were more likely to struggle with drug and alcohol addiction.
All suggests that the ability to delay gratification — that is, desire control — may be one of the most important skills to learn to have a satisfying and successful life. The question is: how do we learn it?
The answer may lie in the strategies Mischel’s high-delay children used.Rather than resist the urge to eat the cookie, these children distracted (转移) themselves from the urge itself. They played with toys in the room, sang songs to themselves, and looked everywhere but at the cookie. In short, they did everything they could to put the cookie out of their minds.
28. What should the children do to get a second cookie?( )
A.They should leave later. B.They should wait longer.
C.They should arrive earlier. D.They should study harder.
29.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?( )
A.How to be high-delay children. B.How high-delay children succeed.
C.The problems with low-delay children. D.The advantages of high-delay children.
30.Why did Walter Mischel give each of the children a cookie?( )
A.To educate them. B.To do a research.
C.To entertain them. D.To conduct a survey.
31.What should we do to delay gratification according to the author?( )
A.Set another new goal. B.Try to control the desire.
C.Give up what you want completely. D.Forget what attracts you temporarily.

A study by researchers at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has shown that the use of cool paint coatings in cities can help people feel up to 1.5 degrees Celsius cooler, making the urban area more comfortable for work and play.
Cool paint coatings contain additives that reflect the sun’s heat to reduce surface heat. They have been used as one way to cool down the city area and mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect, a phenomenon in which urban areas experience warmer temperatures than their outlying surroundings.
To date, most studies of cool paint coatings have been tested in some models, and understanding of its application in real-life context is limited.
Now, NTU researchers have conducted a first of its kind practical study. The team coated the roofs, walls, and roads in Singapore and found that by comparison with an uncoated area, the coated environment was up to two degrees Celsius cooler in the afternoon, with people heat comfort level improving by up to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Lead author Dr Kumar Donthu, who completed the work as a research fellow at Energy Research Institute, said, “Our study provides evidence that cool paint coatings reduce heat build-up and cool the urban environment. This is a small solution for cooling that has an immediate effect, compared to other choices. Moreover, by reducing the amount of heat absorbed in buildings, we also reduce indoor air-conditioning energy consumption (消耗). Findings from the study are not just for cities in Singapore where it is hot all year round, but for other urban areas around the world too.”
The study, published in Sustainable Cities and Society in March, supports the NTU 2025 strategic plan, which seeks to deal with human’s great challenges on sustainability (持续性) and speed up research discoveries that reduce human impact on the environment.
32.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 2 mean?( )
A.Reduce. B.Form.
C.Avoid. D.Explain.
33.What do NTU researchers focus on at present?( )
A.Coating experiments in laboratories. B.Changes of temperature comfort level.
C.Real-world testing of cool paint coatings. D.Coating materials in various environments.
34.What can be inferred about the use of cool paint coatings according to Dr Kumar Donthu?( )
A.It’s simple but workable. B.It’s effective but short-sighted.
C.It’s wide-ranging but demanding. D.It’s environmentally friendly but expensive.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?( )
A.NTU Study: Urban Heat Island Effect B.Cooling Cities: NTU’s Paint Solution
C.Big Challenge: Urban Heat Reduction D.Cool Paint: The Key to Urban Comfort

第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a small Chinese village, a young girl named Mei lived with a deep love for painting. Her artworks, filled with lively colours, caught the beauty of her surroundings. Despite her talent, Mei often battled with self-doubt. She wondered if her skills were truly excellent or if she was just fortunate.
One day, Mei heard about a painting contest in the town called the “Sunlit Art Challenge”. Determined to prove herself and remove the doubts, Mei quickly signed up for it. The contest stirred a mix of excitement and nervousness in her. Mei spent countless hours perfecting her painting technique, pouring her heart and soul into her works.
For the contest, Mei painted a beautiful sunrise over the sea. The sun just started to rise above the horizon, its bright light beginning to shine over the ocean. The sun’s rays looked like golden light, spreading across the water and making it shine like a giant mirror. As the sun rose higher, it looked like a bright ball of fire, warming the sea and making the waves shine brightly. The sky changed colours too, from a soft blue to bright oranges, pinks and reds. It was like watching the day begin right there on her canvas (画布). Mei’s painting captured the peaceful yet lively scene of the sun’s first rays touching the vast ocean, symbolizing hope.
On the day of the contest, the village square was filled with excitement. Artists from near and far displayed their works. Mei set up her painting, feeling both proud and anxious. As the judges evaluated Mei’s painting, her heart raced with nervousness. Since their expressions were hard to read, Mei felt like her doubts were right, that she wasn’t as good as she hoped.
When the host started to announce the winners, Mei listened with hope and curiosity. But sadly her name wasn’t called. Disappointment washed over her, and she forced a smile, applauding the winners. After the contest, Mei felt disheartened. She thought her painting had failed to impress anyone, and she lost her motivation to lift her brush. At that time, Mr Zhang, a villager, approached Mei.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Mr Zhang told Mei that Mei’s painting was excellent and moved him.

Mr Zhang’s recognition of Mei’s works renewed Mei’s interest in painting.

第一节
Dear Mr Green,
The reason why I am writing to you is that I quarreled with my good friend Mike and I need your help now.
The quarrel occurred when we were discussing whether we should go shopping last weekend. Because of the coming examination, he insisted on studying at school while I opposed strongly. After the incident, we have not chatted any more, causing me great depression. I am sincerely sorry to see things going like this and I have been feeling frustrated ever since.
I really don’t want to lose such a good friend. Could you please offer me some effective and practical advice? Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Nearing the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she pushed the door open and entered the house, she found her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sank down into the sofa. “Where could my mother be?” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me?” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, tears rolling down her cheeks.
At that time, her mother came back and touched her hair gently, which called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, fatigued but relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” she expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled, patting her back gently. It dawned on Jenny that Mum’s love was invisible and intangible, but always surrounded us.

第二节
Mr Zhang told Mei that Mei’s painting was excellent and moved him. With tears in his eyes, he told her how her painting of the sunrise had profoundly touched him. Mr Zhang explained that he had been going through a tough time and that Mei’s painting reminded him of the beauty and hope in the world. He described how the warm colours and the image of the sun rising over the ocean gave him a sense of peace and comfort. Mr Zhang’s words made Mei realize that her works had a significant impact, reaching beyond just winning contests.
Mr Zhang’s recognition of Mei’s works renewed Mei’s interest in painting. She started to see her art not just as a means to achieve personal recognition, but as a tool for healing and bringing joy to others. Mei began to paint with a new purpose, creating artworks that depicted scenes of hope and beauty. Her art soon became a source of warmth and inspiration in her community. Through her journey, Mei discovered the true essence of her art. It was not just about creating beautiful scenes on canvas, but about touching hearts and warming souls.

M:How much is the fare, please?
(Text 3)
M:Let’s do something outdoors today.
W:All right. But I don’t want to play tennis. We played tennis last weekend. Let’s go hiking.
(Text 4)
M:What are you doing with that phone book?
W:I need to fly to Atlanta for a couple of days. My boss told me to make the arrangements, and he’ll pay me back. I’m looking for a travel agency.
M:Honestly, travel websites all offer much more competitive prices.
(Text 5)
W:What time does your plane leave?
M:It leaves at 12:15. And I have to get to the airport two hours early.
W:That means we have to leave the house at 9:15. There’s half an hour before we start off.
(Text 6)
W:Hi, Peter!
M:Hi, Cindy!
W:Great to see you again! Welcome to London!
M:Thanks. It’s great to be here finally.
W:So, how are you? How was your journey?
M:Well, the flight was forty-five minutes late but after that, it was fine. Its service was very good. The in-flight movies were really cool but there wasn’t much food, so I’m kind of hungry now!
W:Oh, you poor thing! Well, it will be a long drive home, so why don’t we get some breakfast around here first? Look, there’s a restaurant over there.
(Text 7)
M:Hello! This is Tom.
W:Hello! Tom, this is Sarah. Are you going on the bus trip to Central Park tomorrow?

W:Well, before we decide we’re going to live in Weymouth, we ought to have a look at the schools. The kids’ education is really important.

W:How big are they?
M:Weymouth High School is the biggest, about 1,000 pupils. Their classes are big, too. They have an average of thirty pupils to a class.
W:That’s a lot. I expect the private have less.
M:Yes, there are about 200 students at Carlton Abbey and 150 at St Mary’s.They only have about twenty students to each class.
W:How many children go on to university every year in each school?
M:Well. Weymouth High School is very good, 50 percent of whose pupils go on to university ... and Carlton Abbey even better, 70 percent. St Mary’s is not so good, only 8 percent.
W:Well, they certainly seem like quite good schools. But we’ll have to find out more before we can decide.
(Text 10)
M:Good afternoon, everyone! It’s my pleasure to share with you my colourful weekend.
I used to live a life in my screen and hardly noticed what was around me. I was always checking the time and thinking of “who’s going to text me now?” My bedtime routine was usually centered on one thing — my mobile phone. I looked through news websites and checked my emails. When I woke up at midnight, I did the same thing. The problem with me was that I felt anxious every night.
So when my friends invited me to the weekend camping without cell service in the village, I thought this was exactly what I needed. Keeping away from my phone for 48 hours changed my way of life. Without my phone, I fell asleep listening to the songs of frogs and insects. In the morning, I woke up energetically. Sitting by the river, riding a bike, or singing old songs, I truly enjoyed what I was doing. I felt free without my phone at the weekend camp, which changed me completely. I listened to what my body wanted instead of what my phone was telling me to do.

Online games do harm to us in many aspects. They can damage our health at our time for relaxation or sleep. In addition, it is likely that we’ll lose attention in study. Last but not least, we may suffer from mental disorders without communicating with people in real life.
For our physical and mental health, let’s stay away from addictive online games!
  That’s all. Thank you!

M:Here is the news from Dallas.
Walmart posted its worst monthly sales results in history, declaring a large decrease in April.
Monthly sales measure sales gains or losses at stores open for at least a year. They are an obvious sign of the returns a supermarket earns, and thus an influence on the amount of profit it makes. Most US supermarkets are reporting their April results on Thursday.
Walmart’s 5% drop in the four-week period fell below its earlier forecast of “flat” sales of a 2% to 3% decrease. In a recorded phone message Thursday, Walmart blamed bad weather last month in most US areas.
Walmart’s chief financial officer warned a month ago that the company’s earlier goal of earnings for its latest quarter would be “a challenge” to achieve, considering what the company foresaw as a difficult April. The company didn’t provide an update. It did, however, predict a sales gain for this month of a small decrease.Walmart will report its results for its first quarter on Tuesday.

The next time I saw him, he said the dish was wonderful.Though I am usually skeptical of praise, I understood because I’d made it with love.He talked of his next physical-therapy appointment.I made sure he had transportation; I would gladly have driven him, but he had figured it out. What’s more, he repaired my chair. He said it gave him a reason to get his strength back.He had returned to his usual self, and his confidence had returned.I was so thankful for the inner voice that directed me to see him that morning.

Opening the door, she was left shocked by a room full of books! Shinning in the dust, books were bathed in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored.Seeing them, Hannah jumped up and down with excitement! She dusted the books, the shelves, and what was left of the furniture. Finally came the moment when she could appreciate the books, which were filled with stories about different creatures. So interesting and encouraging were they that Hannah was immersed in them completely.Meanwhile, she couldn’t wait to share the tales she read with her friends.
To her disappointment, her friends showed no interest in the tales she told. She knew it would be a difficult journey, but she wouldn’t give it up.To inspire their curiosity and imagination, she started telling tales every day at the cottage. She added her own touch of curiosity now and then to different stories, making them more interesting.Soon, the word of Hannah’s storytelling spread rapidly and more people came, gathering around Hannah in admiration and listening attentively. She even conducted workshops to teach villagers how to read and write.Sharing your skill will not only help yourself, but also be a ray of hope for someone struggling to find their way.

Cristina Mittermeier is a marine biologist, activist and multi-award-winning photographer who has given her life to ocean protection. Recognised as being one of the world’s most influential conservation photographers, Cristina has travelled to 132 countries to achieve her goal — to communicate the immediate need to protect wild places.
She began her career as a marine biologist, but soon realised that she could better work for the interests of the oceans and the planet through her camera than with scientific data. In her eyes, science is basic to understanding what is happening to our planet, but it fails to convey the emotions that make us care.
According to Cristina, photography allows us to humanise (使人性化) stories and create something meaningful, and she had an urgent need to share the difficult situation of the planet. For her, it’s all about the emotional connections we can establish with the subject matter. She loves creating pictures that engages people in conversations and makes them stop and think. Establishing a successful career as a photographer has not been an easy journey. She worked hard at teaching herself the basics of photography and then she went back to school to learn more about the underpinnings of fine art.
When asked what has inspired her focus on marine life, she replied, “The ocean is barely mentioned but it is the largest ecosystem on our planet and is the ecosystem that has the most influence on Earth. It absorbs at least 25% of all emissions and most of the heat on our planet. I want people to recognise that the ocean isn’t just hurt by climate change — it is our solution. If our oceans die — and they are dying — we will die with them. Life on Earth is not possible without a living ocean.”
24.What goal did Cristina intend to achieve in her travels?( )
A.To take more wonderful pictures.
B.To urge people to protect the wild places.
C.To work for the non-for-profit organization.
D.To become the world’s most influential photographer.
25.What makes Cristina think she can better work as a photographer?( )
A.She was bored with her career as a marine biologist.
B.She can’t understand what is happening to our planet.
C.She can convey emotional information through her camera.
D.She wants to establish a successful career as a photographer.
26.Why does Cristina focus on the ocean?( )
A.Because of the marine life. B.Because of the great emissions.
C.Because of her love for the ocean. D.Because of the ocean’s importance.
27.Which of the following can best describe Cristina?( )
A.Powerful. B.Patient. C.Responsible. D.Intelligent.

A 16th century drawing by one of the key figures of the German Renaissance has been valued in excess of $10 million after it was initially purchased at a yard sale for just $30 in 2017. According to Agnews Gallery — the London auction house in possession of the artwork — Albrecht Dürer, who died in 1528, is regarded as both the greatest German artist of his time and as one of the most important artists and intellectuals of the European Renaissance. The drawing that has been rediscovered is titled “The Virgin and Child”. As Dürer’s career and legacy have been studied in depth since his death, it is extremely rare to find unknown works of his.
Boston-based art collector Clifford Schorer, who is a consultant to the gallery, added Thursday that he came across the rare artwork, thought to have been completed in 1503, by chance on the way to a party in Massachusetts in 2019. He had forgotten to bring a gift to the party, so he went to a bookstore, which sold collectable volumes. The bookseller told him his friend had a Dürer drawing and asked if he would take a look at it. Schorer agreed, but held out little hope.
“The artwork had been purchased at a yard sale at the home of an architect who had been gifted the piece from his art dealer father,” Schorer said. “Generally speaking, it’s an inverse (反向的) relationship between how dramatic the claim is and how much of a let down it is. For example if someone tells me they have a Leonardo da Vinci, I’m usually pretty confident I’m going to see some images that are unimpressive.”
But when he arrived to examine the artwork weeks later, he was taken aback by its quality. “It was like experiencing a kind of electricity. When you’re in my world you spend your life looking for unknown things that lead to fascinating research avenues ...and I could see I was at the beginning of something extremely exciting,” Schorer said.
28.Why is it rare to find the unknown works of Albrecht Dürer’s?( )
A.He was a key figure of the German Renaissance.
B.His real works were only sold at the yard sales.
C.His works were studied carefully after he died.
D.He had few works like “The Virgin and Child”.
29.What did Clifford Schorer do on his way to a party?( )
A.He went to buy a gift. B.He collected old volumes.
C.He went to a gallery. D.He visited his old friends.
30.Why did Clifford Schorer mention the example of Leonardo da Vinci?( )
A.To show the value of Dürer’s drawing. B.To describe his contradictory feelings.
C.To improve his own confidence in art. D.To show the painting is unimpressive.
31.What does the underlined phrase “taken aback” in the last paragraph mean?( )
A.Sold. B.Shocked. C.Excited. D.Excused.

An artificial intelligence system that has recently caught the spotlight for numerous reasons has been asked to produce images of real-life iconic (偶像的) cartoon characters.
The artificial intelligence that was requested to produce the images is called Midjourney which is an AI program that is designed to produce images from textual descriptions. The tool recently went into open in July and has since grown in popularity as users are able to enter descriptions of whatever they can think of to produce a completely unique image. Midjourney is extremely impressive, as I have personally used it to generate several wallpaper images for my desktop.
The AI system is capable of recognizing specific words such as 4K, real-life, cartoon, high detail and more. Using these words and more, you can write a prompt (提示符) such as: portrait image of Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty in real life. Taking this principle of being able to request basically whatever you want, one, Midjourney, user decided to create an award-winning image and enter it into an art competition undisclosed (秘密的) of its creation process.
Jason Allen, a board game director, spent weeks improving the prompt that he was entering into Midjourney and eventually generated three images that he was happy with.
Allen entered the AI-generated images in the Digital Art category at Colorado State Fair under his own name along with “via Midjourney”. Allen won first place and used the opportunity to make a statement about AI art being accepted among the community, saying, “Is it common for artists to explain their process just for the sake of clarification? Are they judging the art or the method by which it was created?”
32.What is the text mainly about?( )
A.An AI system is able to draw cartoons.
B.An AI system makes pictures all by itself.
C.An AI system creates art works instead of artists.
D.An AI system produces pictures based on requirements.
33.What made Midjourney popular?( )
A.Its style. B.Its function.
C.Its shape. D.Its appearance.
34.Why did the author mention Jason Allen in the last two paragraphs?( )
A.To show his great talent in art.
B.To explain how Midjourney works.
C.To prove Midjourney can do excellent work.
D.To appeal to artists to explain their creating process to people.
35.Where is the text most likely from?( )
A.A newspaper. B.A travel guide.
C.A science fiction. D.A textbook.

I had just poured my second cup of tea that morning and sat down to read the paper. From somewhere, an inner voice said, “Go and see Jeff and bring him the chair to repair.Go right now.”
It was such a strong impulse (冲动) that I hurriedly dressed and lugged (用力拖) a dining-room chair to his door.Jeff was a neighbour who had lost his wife a while back, and he occasionally did minor repairs for me on furniture because he enjoyed working with his hands.
I knocked on his door and waited a while.I was about to walk away when he answered. He looked like he was far away in his thoughts.I felt awkward about disturbing him so early.I greeted him and then asked if he could repair my chair. He invited me inside. We sat in his living room.He looked depressed and not his usual self.He said he had had a stroke (中风) recently, and while he was home now, he still needed to attend outpatient physical therapy (门诊理疗).He had to build his strength back up.I apologized for the chair and told him, under the circumstances, I would just bring it back home.He said to leave it.
We talked for a while. It had scared him to be in the hospital. He hadn’t been there since his wife had died.Having worked as a mental health therapist, I listened to how hard it had been since his wife passed away and how much worse it was now since the stroke. The longer we talked, the more I saw his mood lighten.
We even started talking about his diet and how he had not been eating. He said the dietician had told him to eat more fruits and vegetables, but he didn’t care for them.Mostly, I was concerned because he was not eating much at all.I stayed talking with him until I saw his mood lift and the tension leave his face.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
After I left his home, I went to the grocery store and gathered ingredients.

There’s a change in the sky, the clouds are gathering and there’s a rumble and howl (隆隆声和呼啸声) in the distance. It’s a tornado (龙卷风), one of nature’s most destructive forces. Most of us would panic at this point and hide in the house. But Warren Faidley grabs his camera, jumps in his car and heads right for the storm.Faidley is a storm chaser (追逐者) and makes his living by getting as close to tornados as possible to capture them in photographs or on video.
Faidley’s first chase nearly killed him and taught him something that has stayed with him to this day.“When I was twelve I was swept away by a flash flood.I was conducting my first ‘chase’along the banks of a fast-flowing river.Suddenly, the bank gave way and I fell into the floodwaters.I was carried under water and then my foot found a rock, allowing me to stick my head above the water. That event had a significant effect on me — I knew I had to live life to the fullest.”
He soon moved on to more profitable pursuits (爱好).“About a year after my near-death experience, I decided to ride my bike into the centre of a large dust devil (尘暴), a much smaller type of tornado. I formed a gang of local kids and we chased after these mini-tornadoes.It was these experiences that drew me to my first job, collecting scorpions (蝎子).The heavy rainstorms drove them out of their hiding places and I collected and sold them to an old man.”
He goes on to say:“Chasing is extremely dangerous. One recent scary event occurred when I fled a terrible storm in Texas. The winds became so intense the truck could hardly move; rocks were lifted and smashed into the windshield!”
Some companies want to make a film based on his adventures, but Faidley says:“I’m not committed to anything yet.I’ve devoted my life to chasing, sold my soul to those pursuits and turned them into a million-dollar career.I will not give it away.”
Faidley’s photography has been greatly admired. He explains, “As an artist, I’m always looking for that perfect shot.”

Mount Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon, a state in the western United States. At 3,400 meters it is attractive to many people, some of whom, of course, run into trouble. Each year 25 to 50 people have accidents or get lost on Mount Hood and require rescue.Although most of these are understandable accidents, a few result from careless risk-taking.
In one recent case, three experienced climbers went hiking in the middle of a snowstorm in December. Most hikers climb Mount Hood in May or June when the weather conditions are favorable. But in December, the mountain is covered with snow and ice.Winds up to 135 kilometers per hour blow the snow around, making it difficult to see.Temperatures can drop below freezing. As one rescue worker put it,“What were they thinking? They were just asking for it.”
During a rescue a few years ago, a helicopter full of rescue workers crashed (坠毁) and the rescue workers were almost killed.Linda Carle, who lives in the Mount Hood area, asks,“If someone made a poor decision, why should rescue teams have to risk their lives to save them? Why do people take unnecessary risks and do things that aren’t right if they know that they can get into trouble?”
Most of the Mount Hood rescue workers are either volunteers or part of the local sheriff’s department. There is no charge for these rescues. It is the taxpayers (纳税人) who pay the bill.Linda Carle suggests that people who take careless risks and require rescue should be charged for the rescue. She feels it is only fair that costs for things like damaged helicopters and medical care for rescuers be paid for by the people who took risks. What would you do if you were the local sheriff at Mount Hood?
28.What can we learn about Mount Hood?( )
A.It lies in the south of the United States.
B.It is the highest mountain in the United States.
C.The best time to climb the mountain is in May or June.

A.To ask the government to provide more rescuers.
B.To introduce Mount Hood to mountain climbers.
C.To advise climbers to think twice before they act.

Antarctica is the most distant part of the world, but it is a center of scientific discovery and environmental change.
Early explorers were attracted there by the secret of Terra Australis.Others sought money from catching whales.Still others wanted to understand Earth’s pole in order to better sail the seas.I am a geologist who studies the timing and extent of past ice ages.I’ve been very lucky to conduct five season of research there under the protection of the Antarctic Treaty (条约), an international agreement that encourages scientific cooperation (合作) and environmental protection.
Antarctica is the only continent that was actually discovered, because it has no native human population.British explorer Sir James Cook sailed around the continent in 1772-1775, but saw only some outlying islands (离岛).Cook said that if there were any land, it would be “never to give way to the warmth of the sun”.But Cook also reported that Antarctic waters were rich with wildlife.
Today parts of the West Antarctica Ice Sheet are particularly close to collapse (坍塌).Recent research shows sea level could rise by 1 meter by 2100 and 15 meters by 2500 if the greenhouse effect continues and the ice sheet experiences a rapid collapse, as it has in the past.Despite the environmental disaster in Antarctica, the continent also shows that nations can cooperate to find solutions.“I believe the Antarctic Treaty System is the world’s most important example of peaceful and scientific international cooperation. Thanks to it, 10% of Earth’s land surface is protected for wildlife.”
Yet in these bad environments, life finds a way to survive — showing that there are solutions to even the most difficult challenges. If Antarctica has taught me anything in 200 years, it’s that we can work together to deal with problems. As Ernest Shackleton once said,“Difficulties are just things to solve, after all.”

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a small village. The village was located in the heart of a big jungle.Surrounded by the high mountains and in the shade of green trees, the villagers happily lived a life of happiness.
All of them were used to their robotic daily tasks and none of them had the imagination or the will to try something new, except for one girl named Hannah.Very few people in the village could read, let alone write, and Hannah was one of them. Her parents had made sure that their only child got everything possible.
Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. She loved to explore and would spend hours in the woods looking for new things. She loved to create stories in her head and used to imagine herself as one of her characters.Sometimes, she even told stories to her friends, adding her own touch of curiosity every now and then to different stories, making them more interesting. She wanted to inspire the sparks of curiosity and imagination in them.
One afternoon, when Hannah was on one of her adventurous searches, she came upon an abandoned cottage (遗弃的小屋).The cottage looked very old in its condition. The door was hardly hanging and the wood was about to break apart into pieces.Even though Hannah’s mother had strictly warned her not to go wandering in abandoned places, her curiosity drove her to approach it.
