Have you ever made your life look a little more charming than it actually is by posting beautified things on social media? If so, you may be damaging your mental health.
The posts we make on social media platforms allow us to look back and see what we did on a given day.But what happens when, in an effort to impress our online friends, photos and videos we post become beautified versions of the things we did?
A young girl named Sophia went out to a romantic anniversary dinner with her boyfriend, had a near relationship-ending fight during dessert, and then came home and posted, “Had the best time out with the love of my life!” — even with a photo of the meal.No surprise, but according to a new study, Sophia was by no means unique.Two-thirds of users admit lying about their lives on social media with 20 per cent of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 stating that they edit their own stories by frequently lying about relationships and promotions.
By beautifying our online stories, we are harming our memories. We start believing the stories we tell rather than remembering what really happened.Soon, the real experiences are lost and all that remains is the beautified versions of history.
Scientists fear that these edited stories will end up changing our memories. It’s well confirmed through research that our own memories are often unreliable and can be easily controlled.Writing down one’s life in the form of a journal, or even on social media can help us keep our memories undamaged, but only if we tell the truth. So recording our experiences through whatever medium, to later recall lessons we learnt, is not only acceptable but desirable. In fact, looking back on our own past — however embarrassing or uncomfortable — is not just healthy but can be enjoyable.
1.Why did Sophia post her story with a photo of the meal?( )
A.To make her post attractive. B.To show her photography skill.
C.To convince others of her story. D.To show how enjoyable the meal was.
2.In what kind of tone did the writer write the text?( )
A.Encouraging. B.Critical.
C.Humorous. D.Enthusiastic.
3.What don’t many people realize in the last paragraph?( )
A.Recalling the unpleasant past can also be enjoyable.
B.Writing down our lives on social media does no good to us.
C.Recording experiences through media is unacceptable.
D.Recording our experiences through media is beneficial.

D.Beautifying our history ends up hurting ourselves.

(2024·南京协同体七校高一期中联考) Technoference (科技入侵) is defined as everyday interruptions (打扰) in face-to-face interactions because of technological devices.Studies showed that parents use devices for nine hours per day on average.Smartphones are often used during family activities such as meals, playtime, and bedtime — all important times involved in shaping a child’s emotional well-being.When parents are on their devices, they have fewer conversations with their children, and pay less attention to them.
In one study, 172 two-parent families with a child aged 5 years or younger answered online questionnaires about family relationships.Participants showed how often different devices interrupted their activities with their children. The parents rated their child’s behaviour, such as how often they got upset or how easily their feelings were hurt. They also reported on their own levels of stress and depression, the support they received from their partners, and their child’s screen media use.
In almost all cases, devices were part of parent-child interactions during the day.Technology may serve as a refuge for parents who have to deal with difficult child behaviour. However, it has its drawbacks.
Electronic device use means parents can’t provide meaningful emotional support and positive feedback to their children, which causes behaviour such as crying. But this adds to parents’ stress levels.Parents are likely to spend more time with their technological products, and the cycle continues.“These results showed that relationships between parent technoference and child behaviour influence each other over time,” said McDaniel.“Parents who have children with behavioural problems become more stressed, which may lead to them using technology more, which in turn may contribute to more problems with their children.”
So, it seems like the best solution to a difficult relationship between a parent and his or her child would be to simply spend more time with each other, and less time on their smartphones or computers.

8.What does the writer suggest parents do?( )
A.Have more face-to-face quality time with their children.
B.Keep relaxed when their children use electronic devices.
C.Play with technological devices together with their children.

We’ve all done it.For many of us, it’s something that happens so naturally every day. After working on an important project or a task for a little while, you decide to take a break — only to pick up your smartphone and start looking through social media, reading emails, checking out the news and maybe getting in a quick round of “Candy Crush Saga”.A break is supposed to be a time to relax so that you can go back to your work feeling fresh. However, a new study finds that cellphone use during a mental break doesn’t really allow the brain to relax and can actually result in a poorer performance.
For the study,a group of 422 undergraduate students at Rutgers were assigned a set of 20 word puzzles to complete.Halfway through the task, the students were separated into three groups: one group took a break and were told to use their cellphones to go shopping online, another group took a break and were instructed to shop either via their computers or using a paper circular (印刷品广告), and the third group didn’t take a break at all.
Interestingly, the group that took a break with their cellphones displayed the highest levels of mental fatigue (疲劳), and had the hardest time solving the word puzzles following their breaks. In all, the cellphone group took 19% longer to finish the puzzle task, and solved 22% fewer problems than participants in the other two groups combined.
“The act of reaching for your phone between tasks, or the mid-task, is becoming more common. We assume it’s no different from any other break — but the phone may carry increasing levels of distraction that make it difficult to return focused attention to work tasks,” explains Terri Kurtzberg.

11 / 11Section Ⅰ Welcome to the unit & Reading
The Internet: a world without frontiers①
The Internet has the power to connect people across the world to a single shared community②.Billions③ of people in different parts of the world have joined it already, and obviously④ many more will follow.Even in the countryside, the Internet enables people to reach beyond their villages and get in touch with⑤ the outside world.[1]We can achieve almost anything online—with access⑥ to the Internet come some truly life-changing advantages.
[1]句中with access to the Internet ... 正常的语序是some truly life-changing advantages come with access to the Internet。
One of the greatest advantages of the Internet lies in⑦ the quick and easy access to a huge amount of information. To a certain extent⑧, the world’s knowledge is all at our fingertips⑨.[2]With the click⑩ of a mouse or the touch of a button , it is possible to find out almost anything we care to know, from recipes to travel packages, from military affairs to learning resources. In the time it takes to find one book in the library, we can use a search engine to bring up millions of results.[3] No wonder the Internet has now become the first place that the majority of people turn to for information.
[2]it作形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式短语to find out almost anything we care to know。we care to know是省略了关系代词that的定语从句,修饰先行词anything。
[3]No wonder ...是It is no wonder that ...
[4]The Internet has also made our lives unbelievably convenient, with all sorts of goods and services provided by electronic commerce , more commonly known as e-commerce.[5]You can have food delivered to you using food delivery apps and sites .[6]Gone are the days of searching shop after shop for the perfect pair of boots—you can compare styles and prices quickly and easily in the comfort of your living room. Why wait hopelessly for a taxi in the cold rain? It is now simple and fast to order one with a taxi app.Sit back and relax indoors for a few warm minutes until the driver arrives. When you wish to go on holiday, you can make all your travel arrangements just in front of the computer.Forgot to carry cash ?There is no need to worry—you can pay for almost everything on your smartphone.
此处provide与all sorts of goods and services之间是逻辑上的动宾关系。
[5]have food delivered 是have sth done结构,表示“使/让某事被做”。

The future is not about technology vs humans. The future is about integrating technology with humans.ChatGPT pushes us to think harder of what makes us human.
“The world no longer rewards you just for what you know.Baidu knows everything. The world rewards you for what you can do with what you know, and ChatGPT pushes us to work harder on this.If students are only as smart as a smartphone, it means educators are not doing enough.People should focus on developing human skills that actually are important, such as imagination and creativity,” Schleicher said in an interview with China Daily on the sidelines of the World Digital Education Conference.
The arrival of artificial intelligence (AI) really pushes people to think hard about what education is and the purpose it serves, as well as what knowledge, skills, attitudes and values humans have that complement (补充) AI.
ChatGPT is not connected to the Internet, so it can’t replace search engines.Search engines such as Google or Baidu simply extract (提取) knowledge, while ChatGPT goes a step further and analyzes a search before providing a single answer. As a device, ChatGPT is going to make learning much more interesting and powerful, but as a purpose and objective, humans need to work very hard to win that race with technology.

B
We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. Many young people don’t even realize it’s new.For them, it’s just normal.
This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday.I had brought a children’s book to read.It had simple words and colorful pictures — a perfect match for his age.
Picture this: my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read, he reaches out and pokes (戳) the page with his finger.
What’s up with that? He just likes the pictures, I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked the page even harder.I nearly dropped the book.I was confused: Is there something wrong with this kid?
Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them.He thought my storybook was like that.
Sorry, kid. This book is not part of your high-tech world. It’s an outdated, lifeless thing. An antique.Like your grandfather.Well, I may be old, but I’m not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking.I edit video and produce audio.I use mobile payment.I’ve even built websites.
There’s one notable gap in my new-media experience, however: I’ve spent little time in front of a camera, since I have a face made for radio. But that didn’t stop China Daily from asking me last week to share a personal story for a video project about the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province.
Anyway, grandpa is now an Internet star — two minutes of fame!I promise not to let it go to my head. But I will make sure my 2-year-old grandson sees it on his tablet.
5.What do the underlined words “hit home for me” mean in paragraph 2?( )
A.Provided shelter for me. B.Became very clear to me.
C.Took the pressure off me. D.Worked quite well on me.
6.Why did the kid poke the storybook?( )
A.He took it for a tablet computer.
B.He disliked the colorful pictures.
C.He was angry with his grandpa.
D.He wanted to read it by himself.
7.What does the author think of himself?( )
A.Socially ambitious.
B.Physically attractive.
C.Financially independent.
D.Digitally competent.
8.What can we learn about the author as a journalist?( )
A.He lacks experience in his job.
B.He seldom appears on television.
C.He manages a video department.
D.He often interviews Internet stars.

Beth Bonness talked into the mirror as her hairstylist cut her hair.Bonness was telling a funny story about a trip to Rome.Suddenly, the stylist started moving her hands around in the mirror.“Beth.Beth.Beth.Can you hear me?” she said.Bonness asked her what was wrong. In her mind, the words were coming out of her mouth. But she could see in the mirror that her lips weren’t moving. She started seeing bursts of light in the sides of her vision. Then suddenly, the sensations disappeared.
Tests indicated Bonness had a transient ischemic attack (短暂性脑缺血发作) (TIA).About a third of people who have a TIA go on to have a more serious stroke (中风) within a year.
Bonness said she was told it was a one-off incident, so she didn’t worry about future problems.Plus, only old people have strokes, she told herself. She was 49, healthy and fit.Even the doctors implied that she was too young to worry. But the same week, while having a meal with her family, she couldn’t speak clearly again.
Bonness went on disability for a few weeks, and returned to work full-time half a year later. In the beginning, she felt less confident about speaking.Later she threw herself into living as healthy as possible. In 2011, her doctor said she’d fully recovered. She stopped all stroke-related medication.
In 2014, Bonness retired. She ended up saving a historic craftsman-style home in her neighbourhood by changing it into a small residential development. The process had so many twists and turns that Bonness began writing a book about her story.
Last year, she started sharing her writing. She also started a writing group for survivors of stroke and brain injury in the hope that they too might find the same insight (领悟) and comfort.“Maybe it’s about doing more talking and sharing,” she said.“Every experience you have, all that travels with you.”
9.What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?( )
A.The reason for Bonness’ catching TIA.
B.The treatment course of Bonness’ TIA.

10.What did Bonness think of her TIA at the beginning?( )
A.It would harm her eyesight.
B.It was nothing to worry about.
C.It might be a deadly disease.
D.It needed further examination.
Bonness said she was told it was a one-off incident ...the doctors implied that she was too young to worry.
11.Why did Bonness write her book?( )
A.To buy her family a house.
B.To have an active retirement.
C.To record some events in her life.
D.To support a housing development.

12.What has Bonness done recently?( )
A.She has traveled around the country.

Have you ever noticed how you can log in to a website and then, the next time you visit that site, it logs you in automatically (自动地)? If you’ve ever done any Internet shopping, you might have also noticed how you can put items into a shopping cart, leave the website, and return to find those items still in your cart.13.( )
When you visit a website, the website sends an Internet cookie to your computer to be saved in a file.14.( ) This information can keep track of a wide variety of things, such as usernames, passwords, visits, and articles or products viewed.
15.( ) They are sometimes called HTTP cookies, computer cookies, web cookies, or browser (浏览器) cookies. The term “cookie” is actually a shortened version of the term “magic cookie”, which refers to a packet of data that a computer receives and sends back without changing the data.
Websites store cookies on your computer to help keep track of your visits and online activities.Although that might sound a bit intrusive (侵入的), it can be very helpful. For example, would you want to log in to a site you visit frequently every time you jump online?16.( )
If you think cookies are an intrusion of your privacy, every Internet browser allows you to customize your settings to limit or get rid of cookies.17.( ) Completely getting rid of cookies can make some websites very difficult to navigate!

D.Guarding your privacy online can be difficult.
E.You can thank Internet cookies for these conveniences.
F.Internet cookies are made up of information saved as text.
G.Shopping online would also be much more difficult without cookies.
13.E 上文中提到的it logs you in automatically和return to find those items still in your cart是你上网时常遇到的两种情况,下文介绍当你访问一个网站时,该网站会向你的电脑发送一个Internet cookie并保存在一个文件中,这个文件记录了你的上网信息。
F项中的information saved as text呼应上文中的be saved in a file和下文中的information。
They are sometimes called HTTP cookies, computer cookies, web cookies, or browser (浏览器) cookies.

Smartphone: a smart choice?
I was a smartphone addict①.My eyes were glued to② the little screen whenever I walked down the street, had dinner with friends or lay in bed at night.[1]The first thing I did when I woke up in the morning was reach for my phone. I always asked for Wi-Fi③ connections when I went to a new restaurant or coffee shop.A dead battery④ in my smartphone would make me feel stressed.[2]Sometimes I had the uncomfortable feeling that this little machine had taken up⑤too much of my time, and that I could have done something more meaningful than just looking at a tiny screen all day. Sliding into the habit was easy, but it was difficult to quit⑥ the habit.
  [1]句中I did为省略了关系代词that的定语从句,修饰先行词The first thing;由于前面出现了实义动词do的过去式did,所以动词不定式短语reach for my phone作表语时,省略to;when引导时间状语从句。
[3]Then the day came when I finally realized I had to make a change⑦.[4]Head down, eyes on my smartphone, I stepped into the road and a car shot past⑧ , nearly knocking me off my feet⑨! At that very moment, I made up my mind⑩ to spend a whole week without my smartphone.
[4]Head down和eyes on my smartphone为两个独立主格结构;knocking me off my feet为动词-ing形式短语作结果状语。
The first day was the hardest.I was used to checking the news and my friends’ social media updates every few minutes, but now I did not know what to do with myself.I kept reaching for my pocket, for my smartphone that was not there.[5]I felt lost and anxious, as if I had missed something of value.Very soon, time slowed down .The empty hours stretched out in front of me, and I felt disconnected from everyone and everything.
It was scary at first. Then somehow I began to feel free. The things that I had time for![6]I finally picked up the classic novel I had always wanted to read and was soon lost in the beautiful language.I kept a journal of my feelings, thoughts and daily activities to see how much progress I was making.I went out for a run and felt more alive than I had in days. The details of the scene were revealed in front of me: the soft sunlight, a bird singing from a high tree branch, the rich and earthy smell of the soil after the rain.Best of all, I began to appreciate the beauty in life with my own eyes, instead of through my smartphone camera.
of value是“of+抽象名词”结构。
[6]I had always wanted to read是省略了关系词 that或which 的定语从句,修饰先行词 the classic novel;and 连接主句的并列谓语 picked up 和 was lost in。
My offline relationships benefited as well.I went for a long walk with an old friend. Our wide-ranging conversation went so much deeper than brief texts ever could. With eyes no longer fixed on our phones, we had a chance to really enjoy each other’s company .I also made sure to spend more time with my parents. We went to the opera , played badminton , and visited museums. One night, my mother took out some family photos and we laughed about old times.[7] I brought them up to date with what was going on in my life.[8] We had never felt closer to each other.
By the end of the week, I almost did not want to turn my phone back on.Those seven days have given me a great appreciation for life beyond the screen.Real life—and real relationships—are more important to me now.[9] I cannot escape from the modern world, but I can cut back on the amount of time I spend on my smartphone every day, and I do. Life beyond smartphones is richer and more beautiful, and I am going to take advantage of it.
︱posted at 6:44 p.m.,10 May︱by Alan︱
I spend on my smartphone every day为省略了关系词that或which的定语从句,修饰先行词the amount of time。

The Royal Mint has announced plans for a new factory where it will process electronic junk to extract precious metals for coins and gold bars. The factory will be the first of its kind in the world.
The Royal Mint is a Government-owned company that makes coins for the UK and lots of other countries. Most of its coins are made from cheaper metals, but the Mint sometimes makes coins and medals from precious metals like gold and silver. It also makes gold bars.Countries and banks like to keep gold bars because they are very valuable and their price doesn’t tend to go up or down suddenly.
The precious metals used by the Mint are mostly mined from the ground but now it plans to make use of the vast amounts of electronic waste (known as e-waste) that is thrown away in the UK each year. Many electronic devices use small quantities of precious metals such as gold and silver because they are good conductors of electricity. However, it is estimated that just 20% of old electronics are recycled worldwide. This is not just a waste; it can be dangerous, because when e-waste is buried in rubbish dumps, metals and chemicals can leak out and pollute the environment.
Currently, e-waste from the UK is sent abroad to be melted down to recover precious metals. The new factory will use chemical reactions to do the same job much quicker and using far less energy. The process can extract 99% of the precious metals from plastic circuit boards within a few seconds, and could provide the Mint with hundreds of kilograms of gold each year.
“Our new plant will see the Royal Mint become a leader in sustainably sourced precious metals,” said Anne Jessopp, the Mint’s CEO.

An optical (光存储的) chip has been developed by a multi-institution research group that has the potential to train machine learning hardware.
Training of modern-day artificial intelligence(AI) systems costs several million dollars in electric power and requires supercomputer-like equipment. This increasing AI desire leaves an ever-widening difference between computer hardware and demand for AI.Simply, photonic chips (光子芯片) have become a possible solution to deliver higher computing performance. However, though they’ve shown improved heart operations in machine intelligence used for data sort, photonic chips have yet to improve the actual front-end learning and machine training process.
Machine learning is a two-step procedure.First, data is used to train the system and then other data is used to test the performance of the AI system.A team of researchers from several universities set out to do just that. After one training step, the team observed a mistake and reset the hardware for a second training cycle followed by additional training cycles until an enough AI performance was reached. Thus far, photonic chips have only shown an ability to sort and conclude information from data. Now, researchers have made it possible to speed up the training step itself.
This added AI ability is part of a larger effort around photonic tensor cores (张量核心) and other electronic-photonic application-specific combined circuits that use photonic chip producing for machine learning and AI applications.
“This novel hardware will speed up the training of machine learning systems and make the best of what both photonics and electronic chips have to offer. It is a major jump forward for AI hardware speeding-up,” said Volker J.Sorger, founder of a company.
“The training of AI systems costs a great deal of energy and carbon footprint. For example, a single AI transformer takes about five times as much CO2 in electricity as a gasoline car spends in its lifetime. Our training on photonic chips will help to reduce this spending.”

The concept of comfort zone refers to a psychological state in which we feel safe and do not experience anxiety or fear.It is a “space” that we know completely and in which we control almost everything.
Your comfort zone represents things you’re familiar with, your regular haunts, friends you’re at ease with, and activities you love doing.Your comfort zone’s risk free. It’s easy.It doesn’t cause you to stretch.Within these boundaries, we feel safe and secure.
During my senior year in college, I was short of a few credits, and so I skimmed through the class schedule looking for something to fill the hours. When I came across “Private Voice Instruction”, as in singing lessons, I thought, “Why not step outside my comfort zone and give it a try?”
I was careful to sign up for private lessons instead of group lessons because I didn’t want to make a fool of myself by singing in front of other students.
Things went fine until the end of the semester when my singing professor brought the shocking news.“By the way, Sean, have you decided which song you want to sing at the recital?” “What do you mean?” I asked in horror.
“Well, the class requirements state that you have to sing at least one time in front of the other private voice students.”
“That would not be a good idea,” I said emphatically.
“Oh, it’s no big deal. You’ll do fine.”
Well, to me it was a huge deal. The thought of singing in front of a group made me physically sick.“How am I going to get out of this one?” I thought. But I couldn’t allow myself to do that because I had been speaking to various groups over the past year advising them to never let fears make their decisions. Now ...I was up to bat.
“Courage, Sean.” I kept rehearsing in my mind.“You’ve got to at least try.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
That frightening day finally arrived.

I left the classroom as if a heavy load had been lifted.

That frightening day finally arrived. As I entered the classroom, I kept trying to convince myself, “Just cheer up, OK? This can’t be that bad.” Now it was my turn.As I stood in front of the class, which was far away from my comfort zone, I kept repeating to myself,“Courage! Relax! Take it easy! Just perform your best!” It turned out that I did such a great job that all the students applauded my performance warmly.
I left the classroom as if a heavy load had been lifted.Although that experience nearly killed me, I felt a great sense of personal accomplishment on my way home.I was so proud of myself and I frankly didn’t care what anyone else thought about my performance. What really mattered was that I had survived.Stepping out of your comfort zone will never be easy, but afterward you’ll always be glad you did it.

Walking in the park, she saw Jess.
=When/While (she was) walking in the park, she saw Jess.
Being ill, he couldn’t go to school.
=As he was ill, he couldn’t go to school.
Working hard, you’ll make great progress.
=If you work hard, you’ll make great progress.
The fire lasted nearly two days, leaving nothing valuable.
He was caught in the heavy rain, thus making himself catch a cold.

动词不定式作结果状语时常表示出乎意料的结果,常用only to do,其被动形式为only to be done。

5.作让步状语,相当于although/though引导的让步状语从句。
Having been told many times, he still repeated the same mistake.
=Although/Though he had been told many times, he still repeated the same mistake.
Mary sat by the window of the classroom, reading a book.
=Mary sat by the window of the classroom and was reading a book.
例如,加上when、while,强调与谓语动词同时发生;加上before、after,强调动作先后发生;加上thus、therefore,强调结果;加上(al)though,强调让步等。
Though knowing all this, they made me pay for the damage.
Walking in the street, I met an old friend of mine.
Having finished his homework, he went to play football.
Having been shown around the factory, they were very happy.(动词-ing形式的被动式)
Having bought what he needed, he went home.(动词-ing形式的主动式)
3.动词-ing形式的否定式: not doing; not having done
Not knowing this, he didn’t come.
Not having made full preparations,we put off the sports meeting.
The trees are extremely tall, some measuring over 90 metres.
The weather being fine, we went out for a walk.
judging by/from ...从……判断
taking everything into consideration从全盘考虑
Judging from his behaviour, he must be mad.
Generally speaking, girls are more interested in literature than boys.

I can smell something burning.

have/catch/let/keep/leave/...+sb/sth+doing sth表示“使/让……一直做某事”。
I’m sorry to have kept you waiting so long.
I saw the man getting on the train.
I saw the man get on the train.

A
Social media apps have made a permanent home in many people’s phones and spending time on social media has become as much of a daily activity as eating food or drinking water.Since so many people — especially kids, teens, and young adults — are on it for much of their days, there is increased concern over what social media is doing to people with its overwhelming information. Many argue that social media is an unhealthy way to pass the time, and false information from online is causing panic and confusion.
While social media may sometimes be linked to negativity, it is not as bad as many make it out to be.In fact, it has given birth to a whole new way to advocate for important movements, and it’s easy to spread one’s message to reach a large audience.Activists online can create informational fliers, post resources to further educate people on any given topic, and interact with like-minded people that want to help as well within a matter of minutes without even having to leave the house.
Honieh Hemati, a social activist, expressed her opinion on social media.“It can be really educational and inspirational.Sometimes it can open your eyes to a new perspective (视角) you wouldn’t have seen yourself,” she explained.
It is unjust to demonize (使妖魔化) social media, when it seems that most issues around social media are user errors, like anyone complaining there are too many people voicing opinions they don’t agree with, or being addicted to social media. It really is up to the individual — how they think of social media, and how they make use of it.People who have any grasp on reality wouldn’t spend every waking second on the phone, and they are responsible for what they post online.

Microsoft greeted the start of a new era for the Internet last night, saying that it would improve its search engine and browser (浏览器) using artificial intelligence. The technology behind the viral ChatGPT service will be integrated into the American software group’s products.
Bing, Microsoft’s search site, and Edge, its online browser, would be upgraded to generate everything from recipes and shopping suggestions to draft emails and social media posts in response to inquiries from users, the company said.
Microsoft revealed its plans a day after Google had announced Bard, its own chatbot, and promised further to integrate AI into its search engine. The two companies are racing to dominate AI, betting that it will revolutionise the way in which people gather information online.“Rapid innovation is going to come,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and chief executive of Microsoft.“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all: search.”
Bing would be powered by AI, and the new iteration will answer questions in a similar, conversational fashion to ChatGPT, Microsoft said.It could draft a plan for a trip to Mexico, for example, before estimating the cost and drafting an email setting out the plan for other travellers, in response to follow-up inquiries.Other queries suggested by Microsoft included whether an Ikea loveseat would fit into a 2019 Honda Odyssey and what an electronic music fan’s first festival should be.
A panel in the company’s Edge browser will be able to compose messages or social media posts for users, based on commands regarding content, tone, format and length.
Analysts have suggested that AI could transform online search and could pose a serious threat to Google, the market leader.Bing is trying to overtake Google after enduring years in its shadow.Google, which is owned by Alphabet, once claimed that the most searched-for term on Bing was “Google”.

W:I’m not sure if we’ve got any now. Books of that kind are on this shelf. Well, I’m afraid we’ve sold out of them.
(Text 2)
W:Stand back from the door, please. Let the passengers off. You can’t get on until the other passengers get off.
M:How much is the fare, please?
(Text 3)
M:Let’s do something outdoors today.
W:All right. But I don’t want to play tennis. We played tennis last weekend. Let’s go hiking.
(Text 4)
M:What are you doing with that phone book?
W:I need to fly to Atlanta for a couple of days. My boss told me to make the arrangements, and he’ll pay me back. I’m looking for a travel agency.
M:Honestly, travel websites all offer much more competitive prices.
(Text 5)
W:What time does your plane leave?
M:It leaves at 12:15. And I have to get to the airport two hours early.
W:That means we have to leave the house at 9:15. There’s half an hour before we start off.
(Text 6)
W:Hi, Peter!
M:Hi, Cindy!
W:Great to see you again! Welcome to London!
M:Thanks. It’s great to be here finally.
W:So, how are you? How was your journey?
M:Well, the flight was forty-five minutes late but after that, it was fine. Its service was very good. The in-flight movies were really cool but there wasn’t much food, so I’m kind of hungry now!
W:Oh, you poor thing! Well, it will be a long drive home, so why don’t we get some breakfast around here first? Look, there’s a restaurant over there.
(Text 7)
M:Hello! This is Tom.
W:Hello! Tom, this is Sarah. Are you going on the bus trip to Central Park tomorrow?

W:How big are they?
M:Weymouth High School is the biggest, about 1,000 pupils. Their classes are big, too. They have an average of thirty pupils to a class.

W:Well, they certainly seem like quite good schools. But we’ll have to find out more before we can decide.
(Text 10)
M:Good afternoon, everyone! It’s my pleasure to share with you my colourful weekend.
I used to live a life in my screen and hardly noticed what was around me. I was always checking the time and thinking of “who’s going to text me now?” My bedtime routine was usually centered on one thing—my mobile phone. I looked through news websites and checked my emails. When I woke up at midnight, I did the same thing. The problem with me was that I felt anxious every night.
So when my friends invited me to the weekend camping without cell service in the village, I thought this was exactly what I needed. Keeping away from my phone for 48 hours changed my way of life. Without my phone, I fell asleep listening to the songs of frogs and insects. In the morning, I woke up energetically. Sitting by the river, riding a bike, or singing old songs, I truly enjoyed what I was doing. I felt free without my phone at the weekend camp, which changed me completely. I listened to what my body wanted instead of what my phone was telling me to do.

Mike Dank, 31, a technical engineer from Springfield, Pennsylvania, has loved pay phones since he was a teenager.Fifteen years ago, he picked one up for $20 at a flea market and stored it in a corner of his parents’ basement (地下室).
“I thought, ‘I’m going to do something with this phone someday — maybe install (安装) it as my house phone,’” he said.
When he bought his first cellphone as a high school senior in 2008, Dank soon gave up on that idea. Then a few years ago, he heard about a group called Futel that had installed about 10 public pay phones around Portland, Oregon, that could be used by anyone, free of charge. The phones worked through Internet connections, and there was no charge for making calls anywhere in North America.
“I wondered if I could do something similar in Philadelphia,” Dank said.“There are lots of people who can’t afford a cellphone or a phone bill.”
“Pay phones have unfortunately been pretty much phased out — we only have about 50 still working in Philadelphia,” Dank said.
He and a friend, Naveen Albert, decided in June to start PhilTel — a phone collective that would change old donated pay phones into free working phones. For their first project, Dank took out his old 60-pound pay phone from his parents’ basement. He then convinced (劝说) Steve McLaughlin, the owner of Iffy Books, to let him install the first PhilTel phone outside his shop near Chinatown in Philly. On 17 December, they held an installation party at the bookstore and introduced people to the joys of using a free pay phone.
If the phone at Iffy Books is widely used, Dank hopes to place five more around town next year.
Karl Anderson, director of Portland’s Futel, said Dank is on the right path.

Helping a child deal with a weight issue, while avoiding negativity about their body image, can be challenging.Yet, obesity (肥胖) influences 20% of American children, causing harm to physical and mental health.
“Parents should see obesity as a health or medical problem, rather than a willpower issue,” said Dr Marsha Novick, medical director of the Healthy Weight Program for Children and Teens at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, in Hershey, Pennsylvania.“Obesity is not their child’s mistake — processed foods are the problem. The reward centers in the human brain are stimulated (刺激) by processed foods, making people feel good and want more.”
Parents can help by limiting access (机会) to these types of foods. They can use the 5-2-1-0 rule from the American Academy of Pediatrics as a guide. That’s five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, two hours or less of screen time per day, one hour of physical activity or more per day, and zero sugar-sweetened soft drinks.“Kids who spend hours watching screens spend less time playing and getting the physical activity they need to be healthy,” Novick said.
Children who are struggling with obesity are at risk for developing mental health issues like anxiety, depression and mood disorders, as well as more than 300 medical problems, including heart disease and cancer.
Talk to your child’s primary care doctor if you notice your child has trouble keeping up with other children or if you see them start to struggle with mental health issues.Lab work, depending on a child’s age, can check for fatty liver disease (脂肪肝), high blood pressure and some other diseases. The primary care doctor can even recommend a nutritionist to help with healthy eating.“Early intervention (干预) is really important,” Novick said.

Eric Young, a technology education teacher at Williamsport High School, Maryland, never thought he’d be helping students, who want an option beyond high school that isn’t college, prepare for their commercial driver’s license permit test.
“In June, after graduation, it is possible that they could come out and they could be earning basically what I’m earning after 20-something years of experience,” Young said.
There is a great need for drivers in the trucking industry.Companies will need to hire nearly 1.2 million drivers over the next ten years. The US government is piloting a three-year apprentice (学徒) program, allowing 18-20-year-olds to drive commercial vehicles across state lines.Previously, you needed to be 21 years old to cross state lines so this is something that’s never been done before.
Why not have high schools help find the right kids? That’s what went through assistant principal Adam Parry’s mind.“Some of these kids are not going to go to college. They may end up being like a C student,” Parry said.“When you put them in a career they are like an A+ student because it’s something that motivates (激励) them.”
It’s why he’s learned from the six other high schools in the country with a similar course concept (理念).For the first time, at Williamsport High School in Maryland, students can take an introduction to trucking course through a partnership with a local community college.
All of the students enrolled with a driver’s license are on track to sit for their commercial driver’s license permit test when they turn 18.Each one of them is eager to enter the industry and get out on the open road.
Williamsport is just one school that has completer programs which mean students can take a series of pathways that include certain courses and allow them to graduate in a particular concentration.
“The hope is this will give that type of student that’s interested in that field some motivation just as a sophomore (高中二年级学生) and all the way through the rest of high school,” Parry said.“Reaching out to the elementary school kids, the middle school kids, we can start building interest there and then reaching out to our female population to see if we can build interest there.”

A.Being a truck driver is his favourite job.
B.Truck drivers’ licenses are hard to get.
C.Being a truck driver is a good career choice.
D.Truck drivers’ licenses are popular with teachers.

A.It sets new requirements for truck drivers’ coaches.
B.It lowers truck drivers’ age limit on crossing state lines.
C.It is a new start to allow 18-20-year-olds to drive trucks.
D.It requires all high schoolers to get truck drivers’ licenses.

A.He was inspired by Young’s proposal.
B.He wanted students to have some incomes.
C.His school can get the government’s support.
D.Some students may be suitable for the job.
35.What does Parry hope to do?( )
A.Offer the trucking course among sophomores.
B.Excite children’s interest in the trucking industry.
C.Make a survey on the trucking industry among girls.
D.Call on more high schools to start similar programs.

“Where have you been? I saved your breakfast, but you’d better hurry. Mark was worse during the night. The nurses have already been down here asking for you!”
Dr White quickly drank his warm tea made with milk and sugar and quickly ate his buttered bread. Then, he ran up the stairs and down the corridor (走廊) on the left.Several doctors and nurses greeted him as he passed.
Dr White stopped at the door before going in.Mark’s face was pale. His eyes were closed and he lay still.Mark’s mother was sitting by the bed and she was crying. When Mark’s mother saw Dr White come in, she smiled with relief.Dr White jumped on the bed and lay close to Mark.He licked (舔) Mark’s hand to let him know he was there.Mark opened his eyes a little and smiled.

Day after day the little white dog visited the wards (病房) of the hospital. He wagged his tail and looked at the children with his soft brown eyes.Sometimes he gently pushed them with his cold black nose.He always seemed to know when a child was very ill. Then, he would jump on the bed and lay close to them.He would lie there for hours, licking their hands now and then, and wagging his tail.
One day, as Dr White was making his rounds, he passed a man with a very red face. The man began shouting for the head nurse, “There’s a dog in the ward! There’s a dog!” The nurse quickly tried to explain, “He’s a very special dog.He had saved many lives!” The man turned out to be the health inspector and he wouldn’t listen to a word the nurse said.
