While most of us are encouraged to “eat more fruits
and vegetables”, we probably don't realize just how
much one vegetable has become part of our daily diet. People in the United States eat more than 672 billion pounds of corn per year, which breaks down to more than 2,000 pounds per person annually.
Eating the whole form of the vegetable—which is also considered a grain—at a summer barbecue, as popcorn, or as corn flour has undoubted health benefits such as lowering one's risk of cancer, stroke, and heart disease. But most of us are consuming less whole corn and far more processed corn in the form of corn oil, corn starch, cornmeal, and high fructose corn syrup (果糖玉米糖浆)—which can contribute to harmful health outcomes including high blood pressure and high blood sugar, plus increased risk of obesity, fatty liver disease, colorectal cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
“Our main concern about corn should be the way it is being used because corn is at the center of a dysfunctional (功能障碍的) food system that fuels climate change and weakens human health,” says Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Neha Pathak, chair of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine in Missouri and a physician and editor in a health information platform, agrees. “As a main ingredient in various processed foods and animal feed, corn has had a massive impact on diets in the United States and across the globe,” she says. “Funding corn has significantly influenced American and global food systems, promoting diets high in processed foods and animal fat, and low in fiber and nutritional diversity.”
Indeed, most of us are unaware that we are consuming corn derivatives(衍生物) in countless unsuspected food sources including salad dressing, biscuits and bread, catsup, baby foods, chewing gum, doughnuts, cheese spreads, ice cream, tortillas, crackers, candies, processed meat, mayonnaise, peanut butter, pancake mix, soup, chips, breakfast cereal, frozen seafood, syrup, marshmallows, canned fruit, and most soft drinks.
“Excessive reliance on any single food can lead to imbalances in nutrient intake, potentially resulting in shortages or other health issues,” says Jen Messer, a registered dietitian and president of the New Hampshire Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Corn's widespread consumption raises questions about its cumulative effects on health.”

(2024·福州二模)Mosquitoes can carry various diseases
and one of the most popular is dengue (登革热). Dengue is
caused by any one of the four related viruses spread by
mosquitoes, because of which numerous Filipinos died. One of the easiest ways to prevent mosquitoes is to use repellents. In the market, there are many commercial mosquito repellents available. The commonly used repellent in the Philippines is quite unaffordable. Meanwhile, it contains chemicals that may cause irritation (刺激). These account for why researchers seek to develop an alternative mosquito repellent.
The researchers plan to use natural components. Since the component is natural, the new mosquito repellent to be made from it is effective yet inexpensive and poses no risks to health or environment. One of the major components being explored is from lemongrass.
Lemongrass has natural anti-microbial features, suitable for use on various types of skin infections, usually as a wash, and is especially effective on skin diseases. It has mosquito repelling effects and is used to make a mosquito repellent. In using this product, you will spray it over all exposed skin areas. Contact with eyes should be avoided. If irritation occurs, wash off immediately and discontinue using. The very importance of this product is to prevent the spread of multiple diseases
caused by mosquito bites. The new mosquito repellent containing lemongrass extract (提取物) also helps control the outbreak of other insect-borne diseases such as Malaria, Lyme Disease and West Nile Fever. After all, lemongrass is a popular plant found commonly in the country and its extract is used for medicinal and food products.
The new study is significant because there's an increasing number of deaths concerning mosquitoes. While there are alternative solutions, Filipinos cannot deny their brothers and sisters living in poverty cannot afford to buy repellents. Yet, currently the researchers aim to test how effective their natural product is in repelling mosquitoes within households. This initial study will evaluate the product's effectiveness before further trials in broader applications.

(2024·日照二模)Ke'Nyzjah Ferebee was standing by the
kitchen worktop, adding cupcake liners to a pan. She used
an ice cream spoon to fill each with cake batter (面糊) to ensure they would look identical. A finished group sat on the counter with white buttercream turning on top. The cupcakes were for a 2-year-old's “Moana”-themed birthday party. The next day, she had orders for a two-tiered cake and two birthday cakes.
While most teenagers are spending the summer hanging out with friends and working, Ke'Nyzjah is filling orders, updating her website and getting new branding photos. She owns and operates KayKe Bakery, a home-based business, specializing in custom cakes and cupcakes. She offers 14 flavors. She requires at least two to four weeks' notice on orders, and she gets six to seven a week.
In 2020, she started baking out of boredom and a desire for cake. She asked her mom for a solution. Mom pointed her to a box of cake mix in the cupboard. Ke'Nyzjah's first attempt failed. But she tried making more cakes the next day. She got better.
She watched hours of online videos to come up with a recipe and to teach herself baking techniques. “When I surfed the Internet and started seeing other people's decorated cakes, I got inspired to be a cake artist instead of just a baker,” she said. She took business classes such as digital marketing at her school. She also registered for a course to become a certified customer service specialist. It taught her how to talk to customers and get through a sale. She's constantly trying to find more ways to promote her business and find new clients. “It's a little difficult to keep up with both my social media pages and managing school, personal life and a business. It can be a lot sometimes, but I manage.”
Nakesia Fercbec, Ke'Nyzjah's mother, felt her daughter's father has been influential. Ke'Nyzjah gives her mother a large of the credit. “She's like my biggest supporter. She's made me who I am. I've come to realize that I am an incredible person.”

(2024·杭州二模)Education in 2080 is distinctive from education in the 2020s. Until about 2035, the main function of education systems was to supply the economy with the next generation of workers. In 2080, the purpose of education is the well-being of society and all its members. To make this a bit more tangible for you, I would like to give an example of what a child's education looks like in 2080. Her name is Shemsy. Shemsy is 13, and she is confident and loves learning.
Shemsy does not go to school in the morning because schools you know no longer exist. The institution was abolished as it was widely thought of as more like a prison or a factory than a creative learning environment. Schools have been replaced with “Learning Hubs” that are not restricted to certain ages. They are where intergenerational learning happens, in line with the belief that learning is a lifelong pursuit.
Every year, Shemsy designs her learning journey for the year with a highly attentive “teacher-citizen”. Shemsy is actively engaged in designing her education and has to propose projects she would like to be involved in to contribute to and serve her community. She also spends lots of time playing as the role of play in learning has finally been recognized as essential and core to our humanity. Shemsy works a lot collaboratively. Access to education is universal, and higher education institutions no longer differentiate themselves by how many
people they reject yearly. Variability between students is expected and leveraged (利用) as young people teach one another and use their differences as a source of strength. Shemsy naturally explores what she is curious about at a pace she sets. She still has some classes to take that are mandatory for children globally: Being Human and the History of Humanity.
We invite you to think about your vision for education in the year 2080, what does it look like, who does it serve, and how does it transform our societies
