Driving home late one night, I reached into my purse for my phone, only to realize I had left it at home earlier that morning. This was unusual for me, as I rarely forget my phone. As I continued driving, unaware of any issues, I unknowingly ran over a nail and got a flat tire. It wasn't until I was already on the highway, with the nearest exit miles away, that I noticed something was wrong. Unable to keep driving without damaging my car, I pulled over and put my hazard lights on, hoping for help.
I assumed that the hazard lights would be enough to signal passing drivers. But after several minutes, no one stopped. Frustrated, I got out of my car and began waving my arms, trying to attract attention. Still, cars sped by without even slowing down. I couldn't understand why no one was stopping to help a lone woman stuck on the side of the highway. In desperation, I started shouting, “I need help!” To my surprise, this worked. Within seconds, traffic slowed, and two cars pulled over to assist me.
This experience taught me an important lesson about communication. We often expect others to notice subtle__signs when we need help, especially those close to us. However, just as my hazard lights weren't enough to alert other drivers, small hints may not be enough to communicate our needs. We must be clear and direct when asking for help, rather than assuming others will pick up on our signals.
Receiving help from strangers that night changed my perspective on asking for assistance. The kindness of the man and his son who helped change my tire touched me deeply, and I realized the importance of being straightforward about our needs. Not everyone will notice or be able to help, and that's okay. What matters is that we take the step to ask for help when we need it. You might be surprised by the support you receive.

(2024·全国二模)A year ago, my wife and I sold one of
our cars and replaced it with an e-bike. I knew that passenger
vehicles are responsible for much of our greenhouse gas emissions. I also knew that electric cars were an imperfect fix. Though they're responsible for less carbon pollution than gas cars, their supply chain is carbon intensive. But an e-bike's comparatively tiny battery means less electricity, fewer emissions and fewer resources. E-bikes are clearly better for the planet than cars of any kind.
But I also viewed getting rid of my car as a sacrifice. I live in Colorado; e-biking would mean freezing in winter and sweating in summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun.
I was very wrong. The first thing I noticed was the savings. Between car payments, insurance, maintenance (保养), and gas, a car-centered lifestyle is expensive. I predict that we'll save about $50,000 over the next five years by selling our car.
The actual experience of riding to work each day over the past year has been equally surprising. In winter, I wore gloves, warm socks, a thick cap, and a ski jacket when I rode, and I was almost never too cold. In summer, I didn't break a sweat. I just used the throttle (油门), sat back, and enjoyed my ride.
I arrived at work a little more lighthearted for having spent the morning in fresh air rather than traffic. I jumped on my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I'd travelled the same route surrounded by metal and glass.

(2024·鞍山模拟预测)When Posten walked outside to her car, she saw something that looked like a note or receipt stuck to the windshield.
She grabbed it and saw it was a black and white photo of a woman holding a little boy. On the back, it said, “Gertie Swatzell & J.D.Swatzell 1942.” A few hours later, Posten discovered that the photo had made quite a long journey—almost 130 miles on the back of terrible winds.
Posten had been tracking the tornadoes that hit the middle of the U.S., killing dozens of people. They came close to where she lives in New Albany, Indiana, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. So she figured it must be from someone's damaged home.
“Seeing the date, I realized that was likely from a home hit by a tornado. How else is it going to be there?” Posten said. “It's a well-kept photo.”
So she posted an image of the photo on social media and asked for help. She said she was hoping someone on social media would have a connection to the photo or share it with someone who had a connection.
“A lot of people shared it on a social platform. Someone came across it who is friends with a man with the same last name, and they tagged him,” said Posten.
That man was Cole Swatzell, who commented that the photo belonged to family members in Dawson Springs, Kentucky, almost 130 miles away from New Albany. Cole Swatzell on Sunday didn't respond to a social platform message seeking comment.
Posten plans to return the photo to the Swatzell family sometime this week.
“It's really remarkable, definitely one of those things, given all that has happened, that makes you consider how valuable things are—memories, family heirlooms (传家宝), and those kinds of things,” Posten said. “It shows you the power of social media for good. It was encouraging that immediately there were tons of replies from people, looking up ancestor records, and saying ‘I know someone who knows someone and I'd like to help.’”

(2024·深圳一模)I used to believe that only words could catch the essence of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What's 0.99 rounded to the nearest whole number Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0.99=1. Somehow, I thought even though 0.99 is only 0.01 away from 1, there's still a 0.01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn't that make them completely different
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation: 1=0.9, which could also be expressed as 1=0.99999...repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but fascinating about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, a number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that's what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can't ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let's leave it at that: 1= 0.99999... and live a life like it.
