(2024·日照一模)Sri Nihal Tammana of Edison, New Jersey, was named a winner of the 2022 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. The Barron Prize annually honours 25 outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive impact on people, their communities, and the environment.
Nihal founded Recycle My Battery to promote and facilitate the recycling of used batteries. His nonprofit organization places free battery recycling bins and educates young people and adults about battery recycling. In just three years he has built a team of more than 250 student volunteers across the globe who have recycled nearly 200,000 batteries and educated millions of people. Nihal learned at age 10 that 15 billion batteries are thrown away each year and that most end up in landfills where they pollute groundwater, harm the ecosystem, and can cause catastrophic fires. Inspired to tackle the problem, he began collecting used batteries from his community. He put them in free recycling bins at stores until he was told he was bringing too many and had to stop.
Undeterred,__he reached out for help from Call2Recycle, the largest battery recycling nonprofit in North America. Call2Recycle agreed to assist and provided recycling bins for free, which were placed in schools, libraries, and other public places. Nihal's organization now operates across the U.S. and is expanding to other countries including Canada, Switzerland, and India. “Earth gives us so much—oxygen, food, water—everything! So it's important that we give something back when we can,” says Nihal.
The Barron Prize was founded in 2001 by author T. A.Barron. “Nothing is more inspiring than stories about heroic people who have truly made a difference to the world,” says T. A.Barron. “And we need our heroes today more than ever. Not celebrities, but heroes—people whose character can inspire us all. That is the purpose of the Barron Prize: to shine the spotlight on these amazing young people so that their stories will inspire others.”

(2024·泰州一模)Norman Lear, a genius producer and screenwriter, passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 101.“Lear's hit comedy shows changed television forever,” said Darnel Hunt, a leading artist on TV.
Lear grew up in an ordinary family in Connecticut, where an unexpected accident brought about his father's business collapse. So he had to drop out of college and joined the army. In his late 20s, he moved to Los Angeles where he struggled hard for several years, selling furniture door to door. Later on, unsatisfied with his life, he eventually turned to writing for comedy act.
By 1971, when he was almost 50, Lear had produced and directed some shows, among which was the hit show All in the Family. In the beginning, it didn't get on the air smoothly. However, once it did, this show made it to the top 10 for eight of its nine seasons, promising Lear's life was to change.
This successful show was just the beginning of Lear's dominating position in comedy shows. Then came The Jeffersons, about a family on its way up. It ran for eleven seasons, one of the longest running comedy shows on television, becoming another successful story. When interviewed about the hit of his shows, Lear said, “Our team read two or three newspapers a day, paid a lot of attention to our families, and came in to talk about everything that was affecting us in our daily lives.” Therefore, it came as no surprise that viewers had a sense of Lear's own family after watching All in the Family.
“Routinely, Lear's shows might get fifty or sixty million viewers. He was in direct contact with the living rooms and families of the country,” says Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center. “Lear did everything with humor and sympathy.”
5.What can we learn about Lear from the first two paragraphs
A.He led a challenging life in his twenties.
B.His shows had little impact on television.
C.His father expected him to be a screenwriter.
D.He received good education despite his father's business failure.
6.Which factor may contribute to the success of Lear's shows
A.His shows reflected real daily life.
B.His shows featured surprising endings.
C.His shows went on the air immediately.
D.His shows dominated the comedy industry.
7.What can we infer from Marty Kaplan's words in the last paragraph
A.Lear promoted his shows to families directly.
B.Lear won widespread popularity for his shows.
C.Lear carried out face to face interactions with viewers.
D.Lear always focuses on the themes of humor and sympathy.
8.Where is this passage probably taken from
A.A comedy script. B.A story collection.
C.A literature review. D.A news report.

(2024·山东质检)Jorg Muller, an ecologist at the University of Würzburg, with his colleagues, proposes a way to measure the biodiversity—listen to the jungle by AI, in a paper published in Nature Communications.
The rainforests are very important and always alive with the sounds of animals, which is useful to ecologists. When it comes to measuring the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal caller is more effective than uncovering the bushes looking for tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis method is time consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears. Muller's idea was to apply the principle of smartphone apps which can identify the sounds of birds, bats and mammals to conservation work.
The researchers took recordings from across 43 sites in the rainforests. Some sites were relatively primitive, old growth forests. Others were areas that had just been cleared for pasture recently. And some other original forests had been cleared but then abandoned, allowing themselves to regrow. The various calls were identified by an expert, and then used to construct a list of the species present. As expected, the longer the land had been free from agricultural activity, the greater biodiversity it hosted. Then it was the computer's turn. “We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts,” says Dr. Muller.
Of course, not everything in a rainforest makes a noise. Dr. Muller and his colleagues used light traps to catch night flying insects, and DNA analysis to identify them. They found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable representative for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.
Besides measuring the biodiversity, the results are also expected to be applied to outside ecology departments. Under pressure from their customers, firms like a make up company and an oil firm, have been spending money on forest restoration projects around the world. Dr. Muller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standard way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.
4.Why does Muller propose to measure biodiversity with AI
A.To make a new conservation principle.
B.To seek a way fit for hot environments.
C.To work more efficiently than manpower.
D.To study the rainforests more specifically.
5.How was the identification work of AI tools on the 43 sites
A.It agreed with the work from experts.
B.It identified different types of rainforests.
C.It recorded more sounds in the abandoned forests.
D.It was used to restore the biodiversity for pasture.
6.What does the author indicate in paragraph 4
A.DNA analysis is skeptical in the research.
B.Quiet animals are as diverse as noisy ones.
C.A rainforest is always full of various noises.
D.AI technology is used to catch the insects.
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.The research focuses on biodiversity only.
B.The make up company and the oil firm develop monitoring apps.
C.The research will assist in forest restoration.
D.AI's help will attract some sponsors' investment.

(2024·威海二模)The harsh winters and modern cities can make life tough for wild animals, especially when they get lost and are outside their natural habitat for too long. Animal shelters are crowded with animals in desperate need of help, especially during the winter season. 1.________
One day, a man found a small owl (猫头鹰) that was soaking wet and appeared to be struggling. He brought it into a local shelter. 2.________ The little owl was unable to fly, not because of an injury, but because it was too fat.
The owl weighed 245 grams, which was 33% more than the upper limit of what an owl of that size should weigh. The reason for the weight gain was quite natural. The owl was eating too much. The winter had been unusually warm, and as a result, the area had a higher than normal population of mice. 3.________ So it got carried away.
The shelter staff put the owl on a systematic plan of diet and exercise, and it started to lose weight quickly. After some time, the owl was back to its normal health and was released back into the wild.
The question of whether this obesity issue is a strange result of climate change or just a coincidence is difficult to say. 4.________ Wild animals are not used to living in modern cities, and they often struggle to survive. Luckily, there are many animal shelters that offer refuge for these animals. These shelters help restore them to their natural condition and put them back into the wild.
5.________ Some focus on specific animals, such as owls, while others focus on a particular region. However, they all have the same goal—to provide a safe haven for wild animals.
A.Different types of animal shelters have different purposes.
B.Animal shelters are not just a place for injured or sick animals.
C.This meant that it was like an all you can eat buffet for the little owl.
D.They are really important when animals struggle to survive in cold weather.
E.After a thorough check up, the shelter staff found out that it was not injured at all.
F.However, it is clear that it is vital to care for wild animals and to ensure their safety.
G.However, recently, a wild animal was brought to a shelter for a very different reason.

(2024·吉安六校协作体联考)Harpreet Kaur has a passion for connecting with others of different faiths. She said “yes” when Zahabia Ahmed Usmani, program manager at the Kaufman Institute for Interfaith Understanding (KIIU), asked her to introduce Valarie Kaur at a February event at Grand Valley State University. Valarie Kaur is a well known author of See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love. The women share more than just a last name;both have a faith tradition rooted in service and equality.
The book's message struck Harpreet as she listened to the author's online presentations about welcoming all. “Valarie was such a good speaker. I wish I could be like her,” the freshman from Forest Hills Eastern High School thought.
She found out about the Kaufman Interfaith Leadership Scholars from her dad. This is her first year participating in this group that helps youth build bridges to help communities value, respect, and love all. (2024·张家界二模)A study expands positive evidence for a new screening tool that directly engages preschool children during clinic visits to assess their early literacy skills. The tool, called The Reading House (TRH), is the first of its kind. It has the potential to identify reading difficulties as early as possible, according to researchers.
TRH is an assessment developed by John Hutton and his team for kids aged from 3 to 5.Screening takes just about five minutes and assesses performance levels for kids aged from 3 to 5.It addresses a significant gap in ways to screen early literacy skills efficiently and directly. The tool, which is fun for kids, could be used in places like primary care or preschool settings. The screening measures core skills typically appearing in the preschool age range, including vocabulary, rhyming, alphabet knowledge and print concepts. All are skills predictive of reading success and often associated with reading difficulties.
The study involved 70 healthy children—34 boys and 36 girls—between 3 and 5 years old from various socioeconomic background. The children completed standardized tests of important literacy skills: vocabulary, rhyming arid rapid automatized naming. Fifty two of these children also successfully completed MRI (磁共振成像), including the measurement of the gray matter surface of their brains. The thicker cortex (皮质), particularly in left sided areas supporting language and reading, has been associated with higher skills that are predictive of reading outcomes.
Many children arrive at kindergarten unprepared to learn to read, especially those from minority and economically poor backgrounds—estimated at over 50% of children from disadvantaged backgrounds in the U.S. and over 25% overall. “By screening early during clinic visits, we can target effective interventions that help these children better prepare for kindergarten and improve reading outcomes—literally, shaping their brains to read.” said Hutton.
5.What might be the purpose of creating TRH
A.To identify the best reading apps for kids.
B.To develop preschool kids' literacy skills.
C.To discover kids' reading problems early.
D.To study key factors in kids' development.
6.What can we know about the new screening tool
A.It lacks reliability.
B.It has operational advantages.
C.It covers a wider target group.
D.It's modelled after conventional tools.
7.Which participants may be more capable of reading
A.Older children from minority groups.
B.Younger children from economically advanced areas.
C.Children with complex cortical patterns in their brains.
D.Children with the thicker cortex in the left sided areas of their brains.
8.What attitude does Hutton have to TRH
A.Doubtful. B.Favorable.

(2024·泰州一模)Desire for success is a basic human nature. But hurdles are bound to come up on the way to success, discouraging you from your goal. 1.________ Here are some ways that may help you to be diligent and write your own success story.
First of all, having a clear vision is essential to be diligent in life. If you are not clear about what you want to achieve, you will lose direction, motivation and enthusiasm in life. 2.________ So if you want to gain diligence, you should make an effort to define your vision.
3.________ Proper planning enables us to turn most of the goals into reality without regrets in later part of life. Having a plan in advance, though, does not mean that you have to plan from start to finish. It means you should know in which direction you are heading.
Moreover, excuses are not going to keep you away from regrets in your later life. If you delay diligence because of your family responsibility, it simply means your goals are not in your priority list, which is why excuses are coming. 4.________
Finally, diligence is not the birthright of some privileged people but an option. 5.________ Otherwise, you might unconsciously develop the habit of not being serious about bigger tasks as well. So now is the right time to start striving to be diligent in everything you do and ensure your success.
A.You have to be brave when encountering hurdles.
B.On the other hand, if you are, you will stay diligent.
C.You need to practice diligence even for the smallest task.
D.In fact, only those who are diligent can overcome them.

(2024·泰州一模)The human body possesses an efficient defense system to battle with flu viruses. The immune system protects against the attack of harmful microbes by producing chemicals called antibodies, which are programmed to destroy a specific type of microbe. They travel in the blood and search the body for invaders (入侵者). When they find an invasive microbe, antibodies attack and destroy any cell that contains the virus. However, flu viruses can be a terrible enemy. Even if your body successfully fights against the viruses, with their ability to evolve rapidly, your body may have no protection or immunity from the new ones.
Your body produces white blood cells to protect you against infectious diseases. Your body can detect invading microbes in your bloodstream because they carry antigens in their proteins. White blood cells in your immune system, such as T cells, can sense antigens in the viruses in your cells. Once your body finds an antigen, it takes immediate action in many different ways. For example, T cells produce more antibodies, call in cells that eat microbes, and destroy cells that are infected with a virus.
One of the best things about the immune system is that it will always remember a microbe it has fought before and know just how to fight it again in the future. Your body can learn to fight so well that your immune system can completely destroy a virus before you feel sick at all.
However, even the most cautious people can become infected. Fortunately, medical scientists have developed vaccines (疫苗), which are weakened or dead flu viruses that enter a person's body before the person gets sick. These viruses cause the body to produce antibodies to attack and destroy the strong viruses that may invade during flu season.
1.Why does flu pose a threat to the immune system
A.Microbes contain large quantities of viruses.
B.Antibodies are too weak to attack flu viruses.
C.The body has few effective ways to tackle flu.
D.It's hard to keep pace with the evolution of viruses.
2.What does the underlined word “antigens” refer to in paragraph 2
A.The cell protecting your body from viruses.
B.The matter serving as the indicator of viruses.
C.The antibodies helping to fight against viruses.
D.The substance destroying cells infected with viruses.
3.How do vaccines defend the body against the flu viruses?
A.They strengthen the body's immune system.
B.They battle against weakened or dead viruses.
C.They help produce antibodies to wipe out viruses.
D.They expose the body to viruses during flu season.
4.Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage
A.Antibodies Save Our Health
B.Vaccines Are of Great Necessity
C.Infectious Flu Viruses Are Around
D.Human Body Fights Against Flu Viruses

(2024·温州三模)If the benefits of physical activity were made into a pill, everyone would be on it. Studies show that moving improves nearly every aspect of health: boosting sleep, strength, and mental well being. Still, most people don't exercise nearly enough. According to data published in 2023, less than a third of U.S. adults get the government recommended amount of physical activity in their free time: at least 20 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise per day, plus a couple of muscle strengthening sessions each week.
Why is it so tough to get people to do something so good for them Physical limitations, health problems and modern life are certainly factors for many people. But research suggests there's another factor: our brains don't want us to exercise. For most of human existence, people had to be physically active to carry out the basic functions of life, such as finding food. Humans evolved to tolerate a high level of activity—but also to conserve energy for when movement was unnecessary, explains Daniel Lieberman, a human evolutionary biologist. As a society, we no longer move much in daily life, but the evolutionary instinct to conserve energy remains, Lieberman says. “That voice ‘I don't want to exercise,’ is completely normal and natural,” he says.
Physical activity researcher Matthieu Boisgontier demonstrated that__phenomenon in a 2018 study. He gave people control of a digital avatar (化身) while they were connected to brain activity monitors. They were instructed to move the avatar away from images of sedentary (久坐的) behavior that appeared on screen and toward images of physical activity. The study found that avoiding sedentary behavior took more brain power, suggesting that we have an “automatic tendency” to pick relaxing over moving.
That conclusion shows up repeatedly in research. Studies show, for example, that people consistently choose to take a lift instead of the stairs. “That natural instinct isn't bad—it's just that modern life gives us so many chances to give in to our preference for rest that we have reached an extreme that is no longer beneficial to our health,” Boisgontier says.
5.What do data published in 2023 suggest
A.U. S. adults have poor health awareness.
B.The recommended activities are impractical.
C.Most Americans lack sufficient physical activity.
D.Muscle strengthening sessions deserve attention.
6.What makes people unwilling to exercise according to Lieberman
A.The physical limitations.
B.The basic structure of the brain.
C.The convenient modern life.
D.The natural energy saving tendency.
7.What does the underlined part “that phenomenon” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.Sedentary behavior took much brain power.
B.Most people tend to avoid physical activity.
C.Humans evolved for a high level of activity.
D.Brain related activities attract modern people.
8.What is Boisgontier's attitude toward people's physical inactivity?
A.Doubtful. B.Reserved.
C.Approving. D.Opposed.

(2024·菏泽一模)As people hold different views on almost anything, we live in a judgmental world where people are quick to point out the faults and imperfections of others, yet seem unaware of their own. Some misguided souls believe they have a duty to help you to be a better person by telling you what a failure you really are first and then offering suggestions as to how you can improve.
So what is the possible solution to criticism
If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, STOP. Make a conscious decision rather than focus on the negative aspect of a person's performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one word response acknowledges the other person's comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.
It is important to remain unemotionally attached to what the other person is saying, to listen without feeling, to be an objective observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake Could I have done better Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand If so, how can I improve myself As for chronic (习惯性的) criticizers: It is important to set strict boundary with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary.
In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.
1.What may the author think of people who prefer to judge others
A.Warm hearted. B.Self centered.
C.Talkative. D.Responsible.
2.What does a person probably convey by saying “OK” according to paragraph 3
A.He thinks the suggestions are helpful.
B.He defenses himself with the response.
C.He agrees with the comments completely.
D.He wants to avoid unnecessary arguments.
3.What is the key to making an objective observer according to paragraph 4
A.Having debates. B.Accepting criticism.
C.Keeping calm. D.Avoiding criticizers.
4.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To make a judgment on others.
B.To explain some social behavior.
C.To call for action against attack.
D.To give advice on facing criticism.

(2024·潍坊一模)Hiring processes can be thought of as a battle between integrity and dishonesty. You might imagine this is a simple fight between truth seeking firms and self promoting candidates, and to a certain extent it is. But companies themselves are prone to bend reality out of shape in ways that are self defeating.
Start with the obvious wrongdoers: job applicants. When it comes to writing the resume, they tend to massage (美化) reality into the most appealing shape possible. Everyone beyond a certain level of experience is a transformational leader personally responsible for generating millions in revenue (收入); the world economy would be about 15 times bigger than it actually is if all such claims were true. The average British spends four and a half hours a day watching TV and online videos. But each average job candidate is an enthusiast for public welfare, using their spare time only for worthy purposes, like volunteering in soup kitchens.
But the tendency to stretch the truth infects companies as well as applicants. The typical firm will write a job description that invariably describes the work environment as fast paced and innovative, and then lays out a set of improbable requirements for the “ideal candidate”, someone who almost by definition does not exist. Sometimes, the requirements include an ability to go back and change the course of history.
Too few firms offer an accurate account of what a position actually involves in their job previews, which are supposed to give prospective employees a genuine sense of the negatives and positives of the job, as well as a clear idea of the company's corporate culture. One effective strategy is to lay out in text or video, what a typical day in the role would look like.
Such honesty can be its own reward. Research has long suggested that realistic job previews lead to lower turnover and higher employee satisfaction. A paper in 2011 by David Earnest of Towson University and his co authors concluded that favourable perceptions of the organisation's honesty are the best explanation for why.So a process designed to uncover the truth about job applicants would run a lot more smoothly if firms were also honest about themselves.
5.Why are “leader” and “enthusiast” mentioned in paragraph 2
A.To present a rule.
B.To clarify a fact.
C.To make a comparison.
D.To explain a phenomenon.
6.What does the underlined word “stretch” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Overstate. B.Overturn.
C.Overlook. D.Overestimate.
7.What are job previews expected to be like in paragraph 4
A.They show a position as it is.
B.They are made either in text or in video.
C.They are favourable for bigger firms.
D.They mainly contain negatives of a job.
8.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.Pains and gains of employees.
B.How to get the lying out of hiring.
C.How to be more appealing in hiring.
D.A wrestle between applicants and companies.

MUSICAL HERITAGES FROM ANCIENT CHINA
Since remote antiquity, Chinese people have used music to record their lives and describe the ideals in their hearts. Catchy tunes are not only played on precious instruments, but also visualized in carvings, paintings, and buildings. Feel free to explore here!
Han Dynasty (202 BCE CE 220)
This period marked the significant development of the manufacturing of guqin and its music. The example unearthed from the Mawangdui Han Dynasty tomb in Changsha, Hunan Province, proves that guqin had developed into the form known today during that period. It shows 7 strings and 13 markers indicating the pressing positions of overtone series.
Northern Wei Dynasty (386 534)
Buddhism and its musical culture spread extensively during this period. Buddhist temples provided places for musical activities, which were recorded in many of the existing stone carvings. Located in Gongyi, Henan Province, the Grotlo Temple is famous for its reliefs representing musical events. They are precious historical materials reflecting the music characteristics of the dynasty.
Song Dynasty (960 1279)
With economic development, a variety of musical cultures emerged to meet the entertainment needs of different social classes. Part of the painting Life Along the Bian River at the Pure Brightness Festival vividly reveals a storytelling performance. The painter adopted delicate techniques to truly record a street performer, whose superb skills are reflected by each listener's show of appreciation.
Ming Dynasty (1368 1644)
At this time, traditional Chinese operas developed rapidly, promoting the formation of many singing styles. People began to enjoy operas and drama stages were built. (2024·南通三模)On March 6, a media platform's 2024 E commerce Female Consumer Trend Data Report revealed that in 2023 the order volume of horse faced skirts—a type of hanfu, the traditional style of clothing worn by the Han people—among female users on this platform skyrocketed by 841 percent compared to the previous year.
“I've noticed that there are so many people wearing horse faced skirts on the streets now, from young women to children; it's unbelievable,” said Wang Zicheng, a 23 year old hanfu enthusiast.
He recalled that when he wore hanfu for the first time in 2018 at his coming of age ceremony, it was still a minority interest. Now, he is confident wearing it everywhere, even outside of China.
As hanfu gains popularity, traditional attire (服装) and modern fashion are merging (融合), influencing not only clothing styles but also cultural perceptions and people's understanding.
Some hanfu enthusiasts argue that each design and structural form of hanfu carries distinct historical and cultural significance, insisting that these details should be adhered to (遵循) strictly. However, other consumers prioritize the aesthetics (美学) and comfort of the clothing.
Zhou Shuang, 37, specializes in character styling for film and television. She pointed out that for those unfamiliar with traditional clothing culture, it's understandable for them to desire a mixture of classical elegance with modern fashion.
This combination is referred to as the neo Chinese style. “Neo Chinese style clothing design doesn't merely layer traditional elements, but combines modernity and tradition naturally,” explained Zhou. “It aims to showcase traditional charm that resonates with (与……产生共鸣) the aesthetic preferences of today's Chinese.”
Despite the growing hanfu trend in China, there remains a lack of understanding among people abroad. According to Wang, he traveled to a dozen countries while wearing hanfu.
“They guessed about the origin of my clothes, but none correctly identified that it's from China,” Wang said. He believed this is because people in other countries have few chances to see authentic hanfu clothes and accessories.
A potential solution could be integrating hanfu into everyday attire. Indeed, Zhou's students are currently exploring ways to preserve hanfu's cultural heritage while accommodating the demands of daily fashion choices.
4.What does Wang Zicheng's experience detailed in paragraphs 2 3 reflect

A.His hanfu did not represent a typical style.
B.Western people show little interest in hanfu.
C.People abroad were unfamiliar with hanfu culture.
D.Hanfu has mixed clothing styles from other countries.
6.What are Zhou's students doing now
A.Cooperating with daily fashion designers.
B.Protecting traditional hanfu in a modern way.
C.Promoting traditional Chinese clothing abroad.
D.Studying the historical evolution of the hanfu style.
7.What is the main idea of the passage

(2024·临沂一模)Watford and her family have lived in Curtis Bay, Baltimore for generations. Her community has faced environmental injustice. Heavy industries continued to move in her community. As a result, her neighbors have had to live with serious respiratory (呼吸的) problems.
When she knew a plan to build the nation's largest trash burning incinerator (焚化炉) less than a mile away from her high school, she realised she had to take action. The incinerator was being sold wrongly as clean, renewable energy equipment but actually it would be a source of brain damaging chemicals and would release 200 million tons of greenhouse gases per year, both worse than coal burning. Watford felt she had a responsibility to warn her community to work together to shut this plant down.
She co founded Free Your Voice (FYV), a 10 person student organization devoted to community rights and social justice. Together, they decided to start a campaign to take down the incinerator's developer. They went door to door talking to neighbors and organising protests.
When it was discovered that Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) was going to be a customer of the incinerator's developer, the organization fought with the board and presented their case, urging BCPS to withdraw from the project. BCPS was convinced to cancel their contract, which in turn inspired 22 other customers to do the same. Without any financial gain, the incinerator's developer had no market to move forward with its plan.
Watford continues to work with Curtis Bay residents toward fair development. They have a vision for the future which includes building a zero waste movement, a solar farm, and green jobs. She wants the entire human family to join the fight for environmental justice because survival as a species depends on our ability to take action.

C.Constant bacterial infection.
D.Unbalanced distribution of resources.
2.What is Watford's attitude to building the incinerator
A.Unfavourable. B.Doubtful.
C.Unclear. D.Indifferent.
3.What was the result of their campaign
A.BCPS lost financial support.
B.The incinerator's developer stopped its plan.
C.The investors found new market.
D.Many customers revised their contracts.
4.What would be the best title for the passage
A.A Teenage Hero Against Urban Pollution
B.A Teenage Hero Fighting for an Advanced City

(2024·宿迁二模)Like many of the Indigenous (土著的) communities across the Australian continent, the remote communities in north west New South Wales are struggling. Many of the 300 or so residents rely on welfare. Higher electricity bills—up to $3,000 a quarter for some households—further worsen the poverty. They're always at the end of the power line, so the service that is there is quite extraordinary in terms of cost. It's a real problem that needs to be fixed.
To that end, Anderson and other Indigenous leaders have formed the First Nations Renewable Energy Alliance (FREA) to push for renewable energy in Indigenous communities. They partner with private enterprise to support Indigenous communities looking to switch to renewable energy.
“We can build a power station where the community exists,” Anderson says, “so people are able to successfully live in the environment the way they want to live and have access to power which enables them to better determine their economic future.”
Only a handful of Indigenous communities have set up renewable energy projects in Australia. The Indigenous owned and operated company AllGrid Energy, for instance, has installed solar panels and battery storage systems to replace diesel (柴油) generators in the communities of Ngurrara and Kurnturlpara in the Northern Territory's Barkly Tableland. Within two months of the system being installed in May 2016, people were moving back to their homelands, the communities growing from just two permanent residents to about 40.
But FREA will go one step further, working with community leaders and acting as a conduit (纽带) between the communities and the businesses they are dealing with. This is essential, says Anderson, to avoid predatory (吞并) practices they have seen in the past, with companies “playing on the psychology of poverty” to gain advantage. The FREA has drafted terms of agreements that will guide how companies engage with Indigenous communities for renewable energy projects.
One of the next steps for FREA will be to identify a community that can act as a test case for a renewables project. “Our experience is that if we can make it work for one community, it will work in every other community,” Anderson says.
5.What is FREA expected to do for the remote Indigenous communities
A.Increase power supply to them.
B.Help them return to their homelands.
C.Shake them off poverty.
D.Reduce their higher power costs.
6.What does the author indicate by mentioning AllGrid Energy
A.Renewables projects are inaccessible.
B.Renewables projects are quite workable.
C.Renewables projects can increase locals' income.
D.Renewables projects can coexist with diesel power plants.
7.What's paragraph 5 mainly about concerning FREA
A.Its strategies to win over the businesses.
B.Its cooperation with community leaders.
C.Its potential conflict with energy companies.
D.Its innovation in directing renewables projects.
8.What's FREA going to do next
A.Consult the experts.
B.Select a piloting community.
C.Collect sufficient construction funds.
D.Make renewables projects available to all.

(2024·浙江9+1高中联盟模拟) In 1975, a San Diego homemaker named Marjorie Rice came across a column in Scientific American about tiling (瓷砖). There is a problem which has interested mathematicians since ancient Greek times. After Rice's chance encounter with tiling, family members often saw her in the kitchen constantly drawing shapes. “I thought she was just drawing casually,” her daughter Kathy said. But Rice who took only one year of math in high school, was actually discovering never before seen patterns.
Born in Florida, she loved learning and particularly her brief exposure to math, but tight budget and social culture prevented her family from even considering that she might attend college. “For Rice, math was a pleasure,” her son David once said.
Rice gave one of her sons a subscription to Scientific American partly because she could read it carefully while the children were at school. When she read Gardner's column about tiling as she later recalled in an interview: “I thought it must be wonderful that someone could discover these beautiful patterns which no one had seen before.” She also wrote in an essay, “My interest was engaged by the subject and I wanted to understand every detail of it. Lacking a mathematical background, I developed my own symbol system and in a few months discovered a new type.”
Astonished and delighted, she sent her work to Gardner, who sent it to Doris, a tiling expert at Moravian College. Doris confirmed that Rice's finding was correct.
Later, Rice declined to lecture on her discoveries, citing shyness, but at Doris' invitation, she attended a university mathematics meeting, where she was introduced to the audience. Rice still said nothing of her achievements to her children, but they eventually found out as the awards mounted.

(2024·泰州一模)A satellite is an object in space that orbits around another. It has two kinds—natural satellites and artificial satellites. The moon is a natural satellite that moves around the earth while artificial satellites are those made by man.
Despite their widespread impact on daily life, artificial satellites mainly depend on different complicated makeups. On the outside, they may look like a wheel, equipped with solar panels or sails. Inside, the satellites contain mission specific scientific instruments, which include whatever tools the satellites need to perform their work. Among them, high resolution cameras and communication electronics are typical ones. Besides, the part that carries the load and holds all the parts together is called the bus.
Artificial satellites operate in a systematic way just like puters function as the satellite's brain, which receive information, interpret it, and send messages back to the earth. Advanced digital cameras serve as the satellite's eyes. Sensors are other important parts that not only recognise light, heat, and gases, but also record changes in what is being observed. Radios on the satellite send information back to the earth. Solar panels provide electrical power for the computers and other equipment, as well as the power to move the satellite forward.
Artificial satellites use gravity to stay in their orbits. Earth's gravity pulls everything toward the center of the planet. To stay in the earth's orbit, the speed of a satellite must adjust to the tiniest changes in the pull of gravity. The satellite's speed works against earth's gravity just enough so that it doesn't go speeding into space or fall back to the earth.
Rockets carry satellites to different types and heights of orbits, based on the tasks they need to perform. Satellites closer to the earth are in low earth orbit, which can be 200 500 miles high. The closer to the earth, the stronger the gravity is. Therefore, these satellites must travel at about 17,000 miles per hour to keep from falling back to the earth, while higher orbiting satellites can travel more slowly.
5.What is paragraph 2 of the passage mainly about
A.The appearance of artificial satellites.
B.The components of artificial satellites.
C.The basic function of artificial satellites.
D.The specific mission of artificial satellites.
6.What is the role of computers in artificial satellites
A.Providing electrical power.
B.Recording changes observed.
C.Monitoring space environment.
D.Processing information received.
7.How do artificial satellites stay in their orbits
A.By relying on powerful rockets to get out of gravity.
B.By orbiting at a fixed speed regardless of gravity's pull.
C.By changing speed constantly based on the pull of gravity.
D.By resisting the pull of gravity with advanced technologies.
8.Why do satellites in higher earth orbit travel more slowly
A.They are more affected by earth's gravity.
B.They take advantage of rockets more effectively.
C.They have weaker pull of gravity in higher orbits.
D.They are equipped with more advanced instruments.

A
(2024·苏州八校三模)As the sun shines, people will flock to parks to breathe the fresh air. But air pollution is worsening in many places around the world.
Unfortunately, in the western tradition, neither materialist nor idealist theoreticians give enough consideration to this basic condition for life. As for politicians, despite proposing restrictions on environmental pollution, they have not yet called for it to be made a crime. Wealthy countries are even allowed to pollute if they pay for it.
But is our life worth anything other than money And why do we find it more difficult to get the clean air Do the woods, which are often described as “the lungs of the planet”, no longer, offer us the gift of breathable air by releasing oxygen No! In fact, they do give off the oxygen, but their capacity to renew the air polluted by industry has long reached its limit. If we lack the air necessary for a healthy life, it is because we have filled it with chemicals and weakened the ability of plants to regenerate it. As we know, rapid deforestation combined with the massive burning of fossil fuels is an explosive recipe for a permanent disaster.
The plant world urges us in silence that it's time for us to care for our breath and put emphasis on the interdependence which exists between our humans and the plant world. We will have access to clean air only when humans learn to share life, both with each other and with plants. This task is both ethical and political because it can be fulfilled only when each takes it upon himself and only when it is accomplished together with others. The lesson taught by plants is that sharing life expands and enhances the sphere (范围) of the living, while dividing life into so called natural or human resources diminishes it. We must come to see the air, the plants and ourselves as the contributors to the preservation of life and growth, rather than productive potentialities at our disposal. Perhaps then we would finally begin to live, rather than being concerned with bare survival.
1.Why are the western politicians accused by the author
A.Because they give priority to wealthy countries.
B.Because they don't protect ordinary people's right.
C.Because they fail to pass laws to limit environmental pollution.
D.Because they attach importance to theory rather than practical action.
2.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.Our relationship with the plant world.
B.Large scale deforestation across the world.
C.The capacity of plants to renew polluted air.
D.The reasons hidden behind the serious air pollution.
3.How can humans accomplish the goal of protecting the planet
A.By showing respect for plants.
B.By using all natural resources.
C.By preserving all forms of life.
D.By pooling their efforts together.
4.What does the author suggest in order not just to survive
A.Expanding the sphere of living.
B.Sharing life with nature.
C.Developing nature's potentials.
D.Controlling the resources.

(2024·温州二模)In 1986, I watched my first soccer match on my parents' big box television.I was six, and ever since then, I have dreamed of attending the World Cup.
This year, I traveled to Brazil to make my dream a reality. The first match I attended was between Australia and Spain.Within minutes of walking into the stadium, I found myself surrounded by the excited fans, talking and cheering together.Unlike what one normally sees on the news, this match was mainly peaceful except for one fight. When the fight started, the whole section began chanting (呼喊) with one voice, asking those fighting to stop. When they didn't, the rabble rousers were sent out by security guards minutes later.
What struck me about the games I attended was the sense of camaraderie.I met soccer fans from different countries.Sometimes we were cheering for the same team and sometimes for opposite teams, but that didn't stop us from becoming friends. The stands were not divided between teams, and the interaction was often spirit lifting.
I also watched the game in Sao Paulo that ousted (淘汰) Brazil from the World Cup.I was with friends at a large bar which hosted a mix of Brazilian and German supporters. As Germany scored one goal after another, the sadness and even tears were visible on the faces of Brazilians. But German fans came to the Brazilians to comfort them and apologize that the game was ending with such a big gap.Everyone was hoping for a good match.
What I love about the World Cup is that it provides a chance for people to learn about other countries and cultures.People learn about the countries of the teams they support and about their opponents' history and culture.Soccer is a game that not only gives people the chance to learn about each other but also has the potential to unite people.
Sports can be a dividing force, but the true spirit of sports is about unity and fun.The matches at this World Cup have been exactly that so far, and I hope it remains so.
5.What does the underlined word “rabble rousers” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.The injured players. B.The fighting fans.
C.The excited viewers. D.The security guards.
6.What impressed the author most about the games that he attended
A.The chanting fans.
B.The peaceful atmosphere.
C.The warm friendship.
D.The players' performance.
7.Why did the author mention his bar experience
A.To present a fact.
B.To illustrate a point.
C.To solve a problem.
D.To make a comparison.
8.What is mainly conveyed in the passage
A.Fans' support counts in sports.
B.The World Cup is worth attending.
C.Sports bring the world together.
D.Sports are about cultural exchange.
