Based on new analysis,we are rapidly approaching major climate change and the effects on society and the environment could be quite severe.Geographers predict that within the next eighty years, current world climate zones could shift and some could completely disappear.Polar regions(极地地区) will get colder while tropical(热带的) regions will get even hotter, forcing animals to migrate(迁徙).
Climate change could lead to the spread of diseases.Tropical storms and hurricanes will not only increase, but may also become more intense. If climate change comes too quickly, animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could disappear.
According to Science Daily,a study predicts that by the year 2100,many of today’s familiar climates will be replaced by climates unknown in today’s world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of these far-reaching consequences for the whole world. The planet itself has been showing signs of change. In 2004,a serious tsunami(海啸) created by a major earthquake killed thousands in Sumatra and in 2008,thousands died in China because of another severe earthquake.Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was completely destroyed in 2010 by yet another massive earthquake.
Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously thought. At this point,it doesn’t matter what is causing it,but rather, what can be done about it.What’s more, our world is getting more and more unstable every year.Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious.
However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection between this.No one knows anything for sure at this point because there is simply not enough data.
1.What is the major function of paragraph 1
A.To arouse the readers’ concern.
B.To introduce the theme.
C.To summarise the whole passage.
D.To state how the climate changes.
根据第一段中的“Based on new analysis,we are rapidly approaching major climate change and the effects on society and the environment could be quite severe.”
2.What is the author’s purpose in using the examples of earthquakes
A.To show major changes are taking place on the planet.
B.To remind people to prevent future earthquakes.
C.To show the damage earthquakes caused.
D.To tell us more earthquakes will happen in the future.
答案A
根据第三段中的“The planet itself has been showing signs of change.” 故选A项。
3.Which of the following is NOT true of climate change’s effects
A.Animals and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could disappear.
B.It could lead to the spread of diseases.
C.Current world climate zones could shift and completely disappear.
D.Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious.
根据第一段第二句“Geographers predict that within the next eighty years, current world climate zones could shift and some could completely disappear.”
4.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Animals and plants won’t die out as long as the climate changes slowly.
B.There’s enough data for us to predict the future of climate change.
C.The world is getting more unstable because of animal migration.
D.Earth is not the only planet that is experiencing climate change.
根据最后一段第一句“However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection between this.”

One day in Arkansas, some fishermen saw a bear cub(幼崽) in a tree hole.As hours went by,its mother didn’t return. So they called wildlife biologist Eastridge. The bear cub was sick and hungry, weighing only five pounds and with his eyes not completely open.Eastridge called Lisa Stewart, who works at Appalachian Bear Rescue in Tennessee.
Stewart named the bear Miracle because she thought it was a miracle that he had survived! When the cub arrived,Stewart cleaned his eyes and put him in a house by himself.Since Miracle was already five months old,Stewart gave him bowls of food and another bowl of a special formula(配方奶),similar to a bear mother’s milk. But he didn’t eat much.
Miracle was too weak to be with other bears. So Stewart gave him a toy bear named Buddy.Miracle adopted Buddy right away.He took it into his house and covered it with straw. He fed Buddy, too. Now that Miracle had Buddy,he came out of his house more often and wanted to eat.
Two months later,Stewart introduced Miracle to other bears so they could learn from one another. She avoided any direct contact(接触) with Miracle and other bears.Stewart wanted to make sure that they stayed afraid of humans so that they could go back into the wild again. She always hid behind a fence and threw food over the top secretly. The bears hunted for this food as they would soon do in the wild.
Five months later,Rick Eastridge returned to pick up a healthy 90-pound Miracle and another bear Rocky and transported them back to the wild.As soon as the bear boxes were opened, the two cubs ran for the woods—where they belonged.
5.The fishermen called Eastridge because they found .

From the loss of wildlife to rising sea levels,we humans are well aware of the problems that climate change could cause.
While it seems that such issues won’t affect most of us directly,it appears that future generations could grow up without something that many of us now take for granted:chocolate.
According to a report published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, climate change in the regions that produces cacao—the plant from which chocolate is produced—may mean that cacao will soon become extinct.
Most of the world’s cacao grows in countries which are close to the equator, with over half of it growing in African nations like Ghana and Ivory Coast.
It’s predicted that by the year of 2050,climate change will have accelerated the rate at which temperatures in these countries rise, making it extremely difficult for cacao to grow there.
However, the problem doesn’t exist in increased heat, but in lower humidity(湿度),as it’s believed that rainfall will stay at the same level if the temperature rises.
“In other words, with higher temperatures squeezing more and more water out of soil and plants,it’s unlikely that rainfall will increase enough to offset the moisture(水分) loss,” noted Mitchell Ron,the report’s author.
To help solve this problem, researchers from Berkeley University in the US are working on changing the DNA of cacao plants to allow them to survive in drier conditions by using gene editing technology, according to a world report.
Meanwhile, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of chocolate products, announced in January that it would spend $1 billion to help reduce the effects of climate change.
The message here is that if we all do our part,we may be able to prevent some of the worst impacts of climate change.Or if we’re unlucky, chocolate will become a thing of the past.
1.What could make it hard for cacao to survive around the equator in the future
A.The increased heat there.
B.The higher humidity there.
C.The decrease in rainfall there.
D.The moisture loss in the soil there.
根据第四段中的“Most of the world’s cacao grows in countries which are close to the equator,...”及第七段中的“In other words, with higher temperatures squeezing more and more water out of soil and plants,it’s unlikely that rainfall will increase enough to offset the moisture loss”可知,世界上大部分可可树生长在靠近赤道的国家。
2.What does the underlined word “offset” in the seventh paragraph mean
A.Hold back.
B.Make up for.
C.Protect.
D.Accept.
根据第七段中的“In other words, with higher temperatures squeezing more and more water out of soil and plants,it’s unlikely that rainfall will increase enough to offset the moisture loss”可知,随着温度的不断上升,土壤和植物中的水分会越来越少,而降雨量的增加不足以弥补水分的流失。
3.What may be the best title of this text
A.Chocolate Could Become History
B.Work Together to Fight Climate Change
C.How We Grow Cacao in the Future
D.How Cacao Plants Affect Climate Change
答案A
再结合最后一段中的“Or if we’re unlucky,chocolate will become a thing of the past.(如果我们不幸运,巧克力将会成为历史。)”

Of the total US population of 378 million, people over 65 years old now make up 20% for the first time. The senior ratio was only 4.1% by the year 1900,and 12.4% 30 years ago.The number of people above 65 compared to those of what is considered working ages, between 15 and 64,is currently 33.7%.This is up from 18.5% in the year 2005,which means that for every retired person there are now two workers, compared to four workers 30 years ago.The number of people above the age of 80 has grown to 23.8 million, making them 6.3% of the total population compared to 3.6% in 2005.

Due to climate change,Arctic ice is breaking up earlier in the spring, and its area is decreasing. This is creating problems for polar bears that make their homes off northern Alaska and in Hudson Bay.
Polar bears off Alaska normally hunt and raise their young on ice sheets that float on the ocean. But as the ice has melted, the polar bears have been forced to spend more time on land. There, they have begun to frequent(常去) beaches, feeding on the remains of whales caught by native hunters. For polar bears, this food is less nutritious than seals that they normally catch on ice sheets. The shrinking(减少) ice has also forced more polar bears into the ocean. In the past, they only had to swim short distances between ice sheets. But as the ice has shrunk, polar bears have been forced to swim longer and longer distances in the open ocean. This poses a severe danger during rough weather, and an increasing number of drowned polar bears have been observed.
In Hudson Bay,the ice breaks up three weeks earlier in the spring now than it did 20 years ago.Polar bears on Hudson Bay fast(禁食) during the summer, waiting for ice to form in the fall to hunt.Every year, the summer gets longer, and the bears get skinnier.Over the past 25 years, the average weight of the female bears has dropped 68 kg.This loss affects their ability to reproduce, and already the number of births has dropped by 15 percent.Unless the bears can learn to survive climate change, these giants of the ice may one day disappear.
24.What is Arctic ice doing earlier each year
A.It’s freezing.
B.It’s hardening.
C.It’s melting.
D.It’s expanding.
答案C

B.Their diet is changing.
C.Their health is improving.
D.Their families are growing.
26.What does the writer imply about female polar bears in Hudson Bay
A.They are having fewer young now.
B.They suffer from various sicknesses.
C.They don’t need stronger protection.
D.They can’t find enough good males.

My mother,a nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital, worked at night so that she could come home in time to send me to school. She’d sleep during the day and be ready when we returned home before heading out again in the evening. This went on for 23 years. She never complained (抱怨).No matter how tired she was,she always had enough energy to be my mum.
She often had to work on holidays, which made me upset. However, before holidays she always decorated the inside and outside of our house. She’d also have cookies baking in the oven,a holiday-themed movie in the VCR,and music playing throughout our house for us.But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate.“Why do you have to work on this day of all days ” I’d ask sadly.“They need me,too, dear son,” she’d respond, compassion (同情) in her tone.
For a long time I didn’t understand why she should care so much about those sick strangers.Recently,as my grandmother became ill,I found myself spending more time in hospitals. The scenes I saw in the hospital made me see the different side of my mother. The nurses checked heart, blood and oxygen levels to make sure patients were comfortable. They lifted patients in and out of bed and helped them to the bathroom.Beyond their duties, the nurses displayed consideration for each patient.
What I saw helped me to understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation.I was filled with more admiration for my mother.
28.Why did the author’s mother work in the evening
A.To take him to school.
B.To enjoy a movie.
C.To decorate their house.
D.To sleep during the day.

29.What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A.The mother loved her patients more than her kids.
B.Nurses are paid double salary working on holidays.
C.The author wished his mother could stay at home on holidays.
D.Only people with mercy on patients will make good nurses.
第二段中的“She often had to work on holidays, which made me upset.”和“But when it was time to go to work, there was no room for debate.‘Why do you have to work on this day of all days ’I’d ask sadly.‘They need me,too, dear son,’she’d respond, compassion in her tone.”
30.The author really understood his mother’s work when .
A.he asked his mother to stay with him during holidays
B.he looked after his sick grandma in hospital
C.he saw how tired his mother was after work
D.he helped patients to the bathroom
根据最后两段中的“For a long time I didn’t understand why she should care so much about those sick strangers.Recently,as my grandmother became ill,I found myself spending more time in hospitals.”以及“What I saw helped me to understand why my mother was devoted to her occupation.”
31.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Children of nurses are often dissatisfied with their mothers.
B.Nurses are particularly busy at work during holidays.
C.The author gained a new appreciation of his mother.
D.The author’s mother liked doing housework.
本文的主旨在最后一段“I was filled with more admiration for my mother.”。故选C项。
D
Walk through the Amazon rainforest today and you will find it steamy, warm, damp and thick. But if you had been there around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests might have reacted to the cold, dry climate of the ice ages, but till now,no one has reached a satisfying answer.
Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to solve global warming.Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year:equal to the total amount of CO2 given off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to the future climate change If it gets drier, will it survive and continue to draw down CO2 Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.
Unfortunately, collecting information is incredibly difficult. To study the past climate, scientists need to look at fossilised pollen(花粉) kept in lake mud.Going back to the last ice age means drilling down into lake sediments (沉淀物),which requires specialised equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths,or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes.Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled(未取样).So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.
32.How do scientists study the past climate change
A.By predicting climate change in the future.
B.By drilling down deep into land sediments.
C.By taking samples from rivers in the Amazon.
D.By analysing fossilised pollen in lake mud.
根据文中第三段中的“To study the past climate, scientists need to look at fossilised pollen kept in lake mud.”
33.What is needed for drilling down into lake sediments
A.The latest helicopter.
B.The special equipment.
C.The light machinery.
D.The narrow path.
根据第三段中的“Going back to the last ice age means drilling down into lake sediments, which requires specialised equipment and heavy machinery.”
34.What is the purpose of writing the passage
A.To attract more people’s attention to CO2.
B.To call on people to protect rainforests.
C.To inform people of how scientists work on rainforests.
D.To warn people to stay away from the danger of rainforests.
35.The best title for the text may be “ ”.
A.Mystery of the Rainforest
B.Climates of the Amazon
C.The History of the Rainforest
D.Changes of the Rainforest
答案A
根据第一段中的“But if you had been there around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests might have reacted to the cold, dry climate of the ice ages, but till now,no one has reached a satisfying answer.” 故选A项。

Dear Rick,
Hearing that you’re interested in Chinese culture,I’m writing in response to your last letter asking about the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, which is one of the most important festivals in China. It is a day when family members get together, enjoying the beautiful full moon as well as various delicious mooncakes.Actually, the round shape of the moon and mooncakes also symbolises reunion.
Why not come and experience the festival by yourself
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

Gift of Love
It had been a year since Safiya,thirty-four,became blind due to a medical misdiagnosis. She was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity.Although she had great self-respect and was a little stubborn, all she had to cling to was her husband Meraj.
Meraj was an Air Force officer and he loved Safiya with all his heart.Meraj’s military background had trained him well to deal with sensitive situations, and yet he knew this was the most difficult battle he would ever face.“How could I help Safiya challenge the situation ”Meraj was lost in thought.
The day came finally when Safiya felt ready to return to her job,but how would she get there She used to take the bus,but was now too frightened to get around the city by herself. At this moment,Meraj volunteered to drive her to work each day, even though they worked at opposite ends of the city.
Soon, however,Meraj realised that this arrangement was not working—it was hectic, and costly. And he found Safiya became more dependent on him,but each time he would like to talk about it,Safiya avoided it because she was horrified at the idea of taking the bus and crossing the streets alone again. She even thought it was a good choice for her husband to take her office and protect her forever. So,Meraj promised Safiya that each morning and evening he would take the bus with her,for as long as it took, until she got the hang of it.And that was exactly what happened. Finally,Safiya decided that she was ready to try the trip on her own.But she was still worried.Meraj held on to her arm and encouraged her:“Believe in yourself! You can do it!”
Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday...Each day on her own went perfectly and Safiya had never felt better.Safiya was doing it! She was going to work all by herself! She was full of joy and confidence.
On Friday morning,as Safiya was paying for her fare, the driver said,“Lady,I sure envy you.”

On Friday morning,as Safiya was paying for her fare, the driver said,“Lady,I sure envy you.”“Envy me ” Safiya paused and said confusedly.“Yes,you must feel so good to be taken care of and protected by your lover.”The driver responded. He told her that actually, every morning for the past week,a good-looking gentleman in a military uniform had been standing across the corner watching Safiya getting off the bus, crossing the street safely and entering the office building. Then he blew her a kiss, gave her a little salute and walked away.
After Safiya knew the truth, tears poured down her cheeks. On that night, the moment Meraj went back home,Safiya came up to him and said in a shaky voice,“I must thank you.It is your protection and love that make me brave and confident.I am so lucky for you have given me a gift more powerful than sight,a gift I do not need to see to believe.” Then she stood still and gave Meraj a formal salute. With tears in their eyes, they hugged tightly. From then on,their world was full of brightness and love.
