My First Marathon(马拉松赛跑)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet,I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E.class,the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn’t do either well.He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realised running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!
The night before my marathon,I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line.I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line,my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3,I passed a sign:“GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!”
By mile 17,I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.Despite the pain,I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21,I was starving!
As I approached mile 23,I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.She never minds the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m.or questions my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact,I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签),I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she found herself greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins(企鹅) longing to say hello. These gentle, lovely gatekeepers welcomed her and kick-started what was to be a trip Ginni would never forget.
Ever since her childhood,Ginni, now 71,has had a deep love for travel.Throughout her career(职业) as a professional dancer, she toured in the UK,but always longed to explore further. When she retired from dancing and her sons eventually flew the nest, she decided it was time to take the plunge.
After taking a degree at Chichester University in Related Arts,Ginni began to travel the world, eventually getting work teaching English in Japan and Chile. And it was in Chile she discovered she could get last-minute cheap deals on ships going to Antarctica from the islands off Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the South American mainland.“I just decided I wanted to go,” she says.“I had no idea about what I’d find there and I wasn’t nervous,I just wanted to do it.And I wanted to do it alone as I always prefer it that way.”
In March 2008,Ginni boarded a ship with 48 passengers she’d never met before,to begin the journey towards Antarctica.“From seeing the wildlife to witnessing sunrises, the whole experience was amazing.Antarctica left an impression on me that no other place has,”Ginni says.“I remember the first time I saw a humpback whale;it just rose out of the water like some prehistoric creature and I thought it was smiling at us.You could still hear the operatic sounds it was making underwater.”
The realization that this is a precious land,to be respected by humans, was one of the biggest things that hit home to Ginni.

7.What does Ginni think about Antarctica after the journey
A.It could be a home for her.
B.It should be easily accessible.
C.It should be well preserved.
D.It needs to be fully introduced.
答案C

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5 分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
A teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure(安全的).To some teenagers independence means a lot to them, and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence.
Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day.Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own.The best way for a teenager to learn lessons is through experience.I think it is beneficial for teenagers to have freedom.
Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendships at school. Some might say this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their schoolwork.I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their schoolwork. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so.Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cell phone Cell phones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate with friends.
Privacy is another issue between parents and their teenagers.Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room. This also gives them a sense of independence. It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home.I know that my mum always goes in my room when I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door.
21.What is the main idea of the second paragraph
A.Kids know how to live independently.
B.Some parents allow their kids no freedom.
C.It benefits teenagers to have freedom.
D.Kids have a dull routine every day

A.parents should make it easy for kids to communicate with their friends
B.good friendships between kids harm their schoolwork
C.it is unnecessary for a kid to have a cell phone
D.kids should focus on the schoolwork
答案A
解析推理判断题。根据第三段的“Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cell phone Cell phones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate with friends.”可知,作者认为父母给孩子买手机可以让孩子和父母以及朋友保持联系。这说明作者认为父母应该让孩子们能够容易与朋友交流。故选A项。
23.How do teenagers usually feel when their parents enter their rooms in their absence
A.Disappointed.
B.Lucky.
C.Angry.
D.Calm.
答案C
解析细节理解题。根据最后一段的“It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home.”可知,对于青少年来说,父母在他们不在家的时候进入他们的房间经常会惹恼他们。故选C项。

Nick Hancock hopes to set a new record by living alone for 60 days on a small island in the Atlantic.
Tom McClean,a soldier who holds the solo record for occupying Rockall for 40 days in 1985,told Hancock that being alone for two months was the greatest challenge Hancock would have to face.
“I’m fully expecting it to be tough,” Nick Hancock said,“I’m hoping that by doing my daily tasks fairly slowly,I’m going to be able to keep most of my time busy.I think the worst times will come if I’m boxed up for several days by bad weather.”
Hancock hopes to land on Rockall in early June and will carry out the last tests of his boat next week.He has a small wind turbine(涡轮机) and a solar panel for power, more than two months’ food,a satellite phone and a laptop loaded with e-books to keep him going.Hancock will update an adventure blog, texting messages out on the Internet and emailing his wife Pam and friends every day.
Rockall has been occupied before, most famously by McClean but also by three Greenpeace campaigners, who set the long-stay record of 42 days in 1997 by occupying the rock in protest at oil and gas exploration in the area.
The last human inhabitants Hancock knows of are a small group of Belgian amateur radio enthusiasts, who are interested in broadcasting from distant islands;they were on Rockall overnight in late 2010.

Believing that your qualities are carved in stone—the fixed mindset—creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over. Some of us are trained in this mindset from an early age.Even as a child,I was focused on being smart, but the fixed mindset was really stamped in by Mrs Wilson,my sixth-grade teacher. She believed that people’s IQ scores told the whole story of who they were.We were seated around the room in IQ order, and only the highest-IQ students could be trusted to collect homework,or take a note to the principal. She was creating a mindset in which everyone in the class had one consuming goal—look smart, don’t look stupid.
I’ve seen so many people with this consuming goal of proving themselves—in the classroom,in their careers, and in their relationships.Every situation calls for a confirmation of their intelligence, personality,or character.Every situation is evaluated:Will I succeed or fail Will I look smart or stupid Will I feel like a winner or a loser
But doesn’t our society value intelligence, personality, and character Isn’t it normal to want these qualities Yes, but...
There’s another mindset, the growth mindset, which is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can develop through your efforts.Everyone can change and grow through efforts and experience.Did you know that Darwin and Tolstoy were considered ordinary children That the photographer Cindy Sherman, who has been on almost every list of the most important artists of the twentieth century, failed her first photography course
You can see how the belief that valuable qualities can be developed creates a passion for learning. Why waste time proving how great you are, when you could be getting better Why hide weaknesses instead of overcoming them The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it,even when it’s not going well,is the feature of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to achieve success during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

Imagine a child standing on a diving board four feet high and asking himself the question:“Should I jump ” This is what motivation or the lack of it can do.Motivation and goal setting are the two sides of the same coin. 36 Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided.
37 More than that, how should you stay motivated to achieve the goal First, you need to evaluate yourself, your values, your strengths, your weaknesses, your achievements, your desires, etc.Only then should you set your goals.
You also need to judge the quality and depth of your motivation. This is quite important, because it is directly related to your commitment. There are times when your heart is not in your work. 38 So,slow down and think what you really want to do at that moment.Clarity(清晰)of thoughts can help you move forward.
Another way of setting realistic goals is to analyze your short and long term objectives, keeping in mind your beliefs, values and strengths.Remember that goals are flexible. 39 They also need to be measurable. You must keep these points in mind while setting your goals.
Your personal circumstances are equally important. For example, you may want to be a pilot but can’t become one because your eyesight is not good enough. 40 You should reassess your goals, and motivate yourself to set a fresh goal.
You will surely need to overcome some difficulties, some planned, but most unplanned. You cannot overcome them without ample motivation.Make sure that you plan for these difficulties at the time of setting your goals.

Landon Cunningham’s 9th birthday celebration and first trip to a Major League baseball game changed from a near disaster to relief in a split second(刹那),all thanks to his hero dad.
Landon was looking at his phone while sending his mum a picture from Saturday’s game when Pittsburgh outfielder(外野手) Danny Ortiz lost control of his bat. That sent the bat flying fast into the seats behind the first base, directly at Landon’s face.At the last moment, the boy’s father,Shaun Cunningham, put out his arm to block the bat from hitting his son.
“I didn’t have a lot of time to think,”Shaun said.“Once I realised that it was headed for my son,I just did anything that I could to deflect it.”
“I looked up because my dad said something, but I didn’t look up in time and he put out his arm to block it,” Landon said.
The family was able to breathe a sigh of relief thanks to Shaun, who is a firefighter.Shaun’s wife,Ashley, got emotional when she first saw a photo of her son nearly getting badly hit.“She got a little disgusted looking at it,”Shaun said about his wife.
And soon,Landon will have something else to commemorate(纪念) his memorable big league birthday.

Have you ever found yourself in this situation:You hear a song you used to sing when you were a child—a bit of homesickness,as we say.But it is not a distant childhood memory. The words come back to you as clearly as when you sang them all those years ago. Here is an example:
I had not heard this song for many years. But when the DJ played it recently at a children’s birthday party,I sang it word for word.“A noun’s a special kind of word. It’s any name you’ve ever heard.I find it quite interesting—a noun’s a person, place or thing.”This is the Schoolhouse Rock song that taught me what nouns are and I never forget it.
It seems there is a scientific reason for this.Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in a song was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages.
...
Language teachers already know the value of using music and singing.A teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington,D.C.relies heavily on songs to teach Chinese.Hua Zhuying teaches students who most likely have never spoken Chinese before coming to the school.Ms Hua says she uses music all the time to teach children Chinese.
For example, she says, for little kids she usually uses English songs but teaches them the Chinese lyrics(歌词).So it’s easy for them to start because they know the music. What they need is just to translate English into Chinese words. She adds that it is fun for the kids.“So,I think they are really having fun learning Chinese songs using English music.Sometimes,I think if I were taught English like that way maybe I would speak much better English than now.”

A.the educational idea in America is very advanced
B.the brain remembers language better if you sing it

三、阅读理解
Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional(情感的) intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person’s makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills”.Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence.
We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims.Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person.
Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis(重视) on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being.The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.
Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable,we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives(视角) from which to study how people manage their lives.Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction.
1.What is a common misunderstanding of emotional intelligence
A.It can be measured by an IQ test.
B.It helps to exercise a person’s mind.
C.It includes a set of emotional skills.
D.It refers to a person’s positive qualities.

2.Why does the author mention “doctor” and “cheater” in paragraph 2
A.To explain a rule.
B.To clarify a concept.
C.To present a fact.
D.To make a prediction.
答案B
解析推理判断题。第二段首先对情商这个概念进行了描述,然后列举了医生和骗子运用情商的例子,最后得出结论,一个高情商的人未必就是一个有道德的人。故选B项。
3.What is the author’s attitude to the popularization of emotional intelligence
A.Favorable. B.Intolerant.
C.Doubtful. D.Unclear.
答案A
解析观点态度题。根据第三段第一句可推断,作者认为,情商的普及好处比坏处多。显然,作者对此持有赞同的态度。故选A项。
4.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning emotional intelligence

B.Expectations for future studies.
C.Its practical application.
D.Scientists with new perspectives.
答案B
解析段落大意题。根据最后一段内容可知,人们希望未来的关注点是针对情商开展科学的、学术性的研究,用于指导人们少走弯路,更好地生活。这显然是对未来研究的期盼。故选B项。
