Lucille Clifton was the first African American Poet Laureate of Maryland.Critics call her one of the greatest writers of our time.
Lucille Clifton was born in Depew,New York in 1936.She began writing poetry when she was about ten years old.She had developed an interest in poetry because of her mother,Thelma Sayles. Her mother was also a poet although her poems were never published. As a child Lucille would sit on her mother’s lap and listen as she read poetry. She learned to love words and the power of words. That stayed with her as she grew.
While her mother taught her to love poetry, her father gave her the gift of storytelling. He would tell Lucille interesting stories about her ancestors, especially the one named Lucille who was his grandmother.Samuel Clifton said she was the first black woman to be legally hanged in the state of Virginia.Lucille Clifton wrote about it in her poem called “Lucy”.
Lucille often talked about her love for words. She loved the sound of words and the way the words felt in her mouth. She loved finding interesting ways to use words to express what was happening in the world.
Unlike her mother,Lucille Clifton’s poetry is anything but traditional. Her poems do not rhyme or follow a special kind of pattern. They do not use fancy words. Her poetry is known for being simple, truthful and direct. It is written in a casual(随意的),relaxed language. There is very little punctuation and even fewer capitals. Many of the poems are uncomfortably honest.Lucille Clifton often said that she tried to comfort the afflicted(折磨的) and afflict the comfortable.Over the years, she seems to have perfected that art.

I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mum reading me a storybook by my bedside.I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mum was reading.Hearing mum say,“I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself.I wanted to be like my mum and know all of the things she knew.So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her,I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read.We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realised that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mum said,“The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was.My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything.I often found myself telling my mum to drive more slowly,so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading.I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests.Occasionally,I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading.I liked facts, things that are concrete.I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet,now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex,I find myself needing a way to escape.By opening a novel,I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone.I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this.I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding.Reading is a vital part of my life.Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.

Elizabeth Bishop, who was famous for the poetry A Prodigal,Filling Station,Sandpiper,Manuelzinho and so on,was an influential American poet of the 20th century. Her poetry often shows things that concerned her throughout her life, such as her search for a sense of home. Her troubled childhood and the feeling of loneliness from this time affected her character and poetry.
Bishop’s painful childhood is obvious in some of her poems. Her father died when she was eight months old and her mother was mad when she was five.Bishop was raised firstly by her mother’s parents and then by her father’s parents. This experience left her confused about belonging. She had no home and this was shown in her poetry. In A Prodigal, when the character in the poem makes his mind up to go home, there is a sense of pessimism(悲观) for Bishop who has no home. The lack of a sense of home has contributed to her depression(沮丧) all her life.
Bishop attempts to make small, everyday experiences extraordinary in her poems such as Filling Station. In Filling Station,Bishop describes the beauty of a family filling station.Although it is “dirty”,there is order in it.Simple family life is celebrated in it.She recognises the value of home and beauty in everyday life, but she is only an observer of these.Distance remains between her and the family at the filling station.
Bishop’s struggle to locate herself in the world is seen no more clearly than in Sandpiper. It deals with searching for something in a confusing world. She uses the metaphor(暗喻) of the bird which is “looking for something”.The “something” isn’t specific. It seems as if the bird doesn’t know what he wants;the only certain thing is that he is searching.

Why doesn’t the conductor face the audience 36 As the only person with his back to the audience, the conductor is a figure who is bathed in the spotlight, but his complex work requires a high degree of musical skills,as well as an ability to extract what he desires out of the group of artists he leads—his orchestra.
37 A person may become a conductor without graduating from the conducting department of a music school or studying in any kind of conductor’s training programme. However, becoming the conductor of a famous orchestra requires a great deal more than what is needed merely to join an orchestra.
38 These naturally examine a conductor’s technique and musical interpretation when he conducts an orchestra through a prepared piece of music, but they also involve a sight-reading element. 39 The conductor then has to sit in a room and memorise the piece before coming out and leading the orchestra through the piece by memory. Not only does the conductor have to make his arm and hand motion properly, and signal all the entrances of each instrument,he has to point out intentional mistakes made by the orchestra members on the spot.
The least capabilities a conductor must have are:The ability to memorise an entire score.A good ear for distinguishing correct notes among the music of the entire orchestra. 40 Of the conductors that meet these requirements, those with better musical insight and a higher level of charisma(魅力) will succeed.
A.The need for a common musical standard becomes necessary.

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old.He was at home with his elder sister Jane.Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realised this time it was different.
“Quick!Quick!Remove the motorcycles from the shop,” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came.Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik.Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them,Tom could see many of their neighbours—some still in their pajamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However,Jane refused to give up.“I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded(击打) against the door.
Tom noticed the flame was reaching up.

You would understand everything I am saying
and everything that I am thinking.
Our friendship does not depend
on being together.
It is deeper than that.

The first step in breaking bad habits is to identify them.Only after identifying them can you decide to do something about them. 1 For example, you may ask yourself:Is the habit holding me back from achieving my goal Does the habit make me feel good or bad
2 Then you may listen to the things that people say about you.Are people saying the same negative things about you It’s easy to become defensive when someone says something about us we don’t like, and let’s face it. 3
Once you have identified your bad habits,it’s time to break them.First, you should introduce something new and meaningful in your life to replace the bad habits. 4 If you hung around at the bar after work, replace it by going to the gym instead.Or if you sat and watched TV for hours, you may work on a task that needs to be done.
5 Write down the efforts you make to change them, and also the results of your actions. And write down how you feel when you successfully change one of your bad habits. If you can read and reflect on how you feel about the progress you’ve made,it may motivate you to continue to work on changing other things.
A.Sometimes you may need advice on breaking bad habits from other people.
B.First, you may ask yourself how you feel about a habit.

In 1916,two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn,N.Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead,Colo.to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise.Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted:The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruff’s granddaughter.
Why did they go then Well, they wanted to do something useful.Soon, however, they realised what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings,Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold.In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickenden’s book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls’ decision to go to Elkhead.A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed (牵涉) drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothy’s return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism (坚忍) of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff,on her horse, looking down from a hill top:“When the sun slipped behind the mountains,it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals:foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter.”
